Wherever you can.  A hatch if its convenient.  A burlap sack on deck works too.

This.

It's not cheap but worth every penny. Durable and will hold a limit of crabs nice and fresh hanging over the side of your yak.

I've used mine for harvesting fish, crab, lobster, uni, mussels, clams etc.

I've had the same bag for over 10 years  :smt007

I have an OK T13. With the center hatch (modpod) I was planning on using burlap sack in the center hatch or just put the keepers back in the trap, since most of my trips will be single pull.
I only fish on days that end with Y

I use a mesh bag clipped to a sort length of line and clipped to the yak.  I put it behind my seat while paddling and throw it over the side on the opposite side that I'm pulling traps on.  Works pretty well as a little extra ballast while pulling heavy traps.

I wouldn't hang a mesh bag over the side...thats basically a sea anchor and will be tough paddling.  I use a bucket, I can dump some water in periodically and seems to keep the crab alive.  I've used a mesh bag before but found it harder to swap out some barely legals for jumbos...

No need to keep them in water.  That is actually worse for them and for the consumer of the crab as the water can get anaerobic and toxic.

Highgrading is also a bad practice.  It is also a good way to get a ticket.

That's interesting, I asked a warden about this a few years ago and he said it was legal as long As you don't have your limit. Good to know

Not that she is the final word on all things DFW, but Carrie Wilson did have this to say on the matter:

When crabbing at least half the time you are idle during your soak. This is when the bag gets hung overboard. When it's time to paddle towards your traps is when you bring the crabs on deck so that there is no drag. Works just fine and plus one on the illegal upgrading of crabs.

Burlap sack in rear tankwell.  Same for fish.  Dunk the sack in the water after adding crab.   Wet burlap keeps em cool and alive well after I get home and gear cleaned.  Crabs in a cooler or bucket with water will suffocate quickly and meat quality deteriorates.  I used to use 2 traps and 2 rings but its a lot of gear to haul.  Just one collapsible trap and a set of rings or maybe 2 rings.  It's a very low key sport for me,  I enjoy the time just floating around in between pulling rings.   Hope the weather gets better soon!

I used a mesh dive bag.  I leave it hanging over the side when I'm stopped, but when I'm paddling, it sits on/between my legs.

I see lots of guys using a 5-gallon bucket.
