Me and some of the guys from the shop had fun comparing pedal drives. We had a Hobie PA 14, Jackson Coosa FD, and the Native Titan 12 and we took them all to our demo facility at Lodi Lake for a test. Watch out video here.

Thanks for sharing this vid!

Have you had a chance to try the new Pelican Catch 130 pedal kayak? They basically waited for Hobie's mirage drive patent to expire and created a similar pedal drive of their own.

Interesting, but I believe that mirage drive was not properly seated, and that's why the plastic nub broke off. If the drive is locked in place, there's no pressure on that nub at all. The only reason that nub exists is to supposedly help the slide into the yakgina. I cut those nubs off on my mirage drive as I find they just get in the way.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...

Yeah it varies on the year and models to have those nubs shaved off or left on. Hobie seller had to cut those off on my i-series inflatable. Hobie will ship the drives with or without the nubs depending on the model you buy. The drives aren't completely interchangeable. In this case it was probably user error in not knowing how to properly lock the drive in correctly, hence the wobbling in the beginning.

Yup, I’ve had the kind of wobble the Hobie user experienced in the beginning. It was definitely due to improper drive seating, hence the broken nub!

Overall, this was a well put together video. Of course I’m partial to Hobies, but it’s amazing how the pedal-powered kayak market has grown! There’s something out there for everyone.

Nothing amazing about it.  The bass tournaments dived into kayak bass fishing in a big way and all the newer kayaks are being designed for that market.

No but I’ll be testing all the new stuff at Paddlesports Retailer in Oaklahoma.

Would LOVE to see someone design an off shore pedal yak to compete with a Hobie. Right now they have the market cornered. Maybe a Kraken FD or a Trident PDL??

True, very good point. I also noticed that these yaks didn't seem very suitable for offshore conditions. An offshore competitor to the Hobie would be interesting to see!
