The sport fishing center in HMB has Calcutta Bamboo for sale. That is the type you want to use for a gaff. It is close to solid, flexible, and strong; it will last years!

How big of a piece do you need,I think my in law backyard has some, just don't remember how big they are.last time I was there the property owner cut it back so I don't know what it looks like now.let me know by sat morning, I'm heading there in the afternoon
My biggest worry is that my wife(when I'm dead)will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it

I got some Calcutta bamboo years ago at what I think (Not very sure.) is called The Bamboo Garden in Aptos area, maybe Freedom Rd?   It is strong - you don't need much more than 3/4" diameter for a gaff that can haul in a 51" WSB. The difference between that and ordinary bamboo is the thickness of the wall. But I had to buy the whole 10 ft length, which tapers.   Why it is called "Calcutta" is an interesting, if not such a pleasant, story.

That outfit on Freedom is called Bamboo Giant.
