Hello All,
The NorCal HOW team has gathered and decided that our next event for 2017 will be hosted at Lake Hennessey on Friday, March 31, 2017. We plan to try and accommodate approximately 20 vets that day. We will be needing some volunteers to take veterans out on the water as well as some to help with shore duty tasks such as carrying kayaks, prepping and cooking food, ensuring vets are rigged up safely with PFDs and rods, etc.
Few rules:
1. No Alcohol allowed at HOW Events
2. We usually could use a few folks willing to take vets out on our tandems or your own, in addition to guiding.
3. Its technically a no water contact lake so just be aware of that. They haven't been too strict on us before though.
4. Please take pictures of the vets, but ask them if they're OK with it first. Some are not willing to have their picture taken, but those that are usually really appreciate the pictures.
If you think you can help join us, please post in this thread. If you know of any veterans or active duty military that may want to attend, contact Raydon. We'll also post up the event details on our FB page at www.facebook.com/NorCalHOW. Please follow this thread for updates on what we need from you guys as to timing of showing up, cleaning up, etc.

I will come over and help out.
I have not seen Sonny since Albion, it will be nice to hang out there.

Just got laid off last week so definitely will make this event!
-
I will show up w/ some brisket!
-
I don't know if my schedule will allow it but if it does, I would like to come and help someway. I have my Outback and a Sun dolphin POS. I can take someone fishing or just help at the launch. I'm an average angler so I might not be the best to put the vets on some fish, but I'd definitely try.

Sorry! I have missed the last event and this one also. I was in Florida last month and have decided to relocate in Jacksonville Fl. Our home goes on the market this Friday and once it sells we are headed east. They do have an active HOW chapter in Jacksonville which I will take part for sure. It has been great being part of the NorCal HOW. Super people thank you for your friendship and kindness. I will miss you all. I will posted reports on my fishing adventures in Florida. Thanks again it has been great! John

Thank you for all the help in the past. Good luck with your new location and I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you Rob, I learned a lot from you and Adam.

AFCM,
Just because you're heading to Florida, (i'm jealous) please look up and hook up with the HOW guys down there. Heard they are a great bunch. Good luck on the sell of your home and safe travels across this great country of ours.
I am in Texas working with the Dallas Chapter of HOW and having a blast. I do mid-week trips with veterans since I am retired and have nothing better to do. Love being that guy in the organization that can do this and wish other chapters could do this too. Having the ability to get a veteran out on a moments notice to get them to decompress is good for the veteran.
We have our big campout this weekend. Just like NorCal has Kelsey, we have this. We get to fish two nice lakes which spoil us all rotten with as many fish as we all catch. We're still trying to get a ten pound largemouth out of one of the ponds and we know there is one in there. Record for the pond sits just a bit over nine, caught by the owners wife. Lots of 5-7's and many 2-3's. THen there are the over populated slab crappies that anybody can take out of the lake since they are "ruining" the owners bass population trying to eat all the minnows.
Well better get my butt on the road. I have to meet up with a veteran who needs a great day on the water. Taking him out to one of our other ponds so he can get spoiled catching bass at almost every cast as well as huge bluegill and crappie.

Thanks! Splashdown for your support with the veterans we need more like you. Being a 30 year Navy veterans I love giving back as much as I can. I have plans to support the Jacksonville HOW chapter as much as I can being retired with time on my hands. Texas is a great fishing state. I was stationed at NAS Beeville for three years in the early 80's and loved the fishing on the Gulf coast. Good times on the water.

It looks like it will be windy tomorrow. If it is too windy we will shore fish. I won't cancel, but be prepared for not so favorable winds.
Jack will be arriving about 7am, so if anyone can get there early to help him please do.
Thanks all, Rob

Due to the high winds my daughter's flight to SMF from Vegas was Canceled. I'm still coming but, my wife can't. She's watching our Grand Daughter.

It've been awhile the last time I was on the water and I had fun chasing the elusive 18" Crappie in this lake :smt003 Thank you everyone for making this a great event. The bank anglers out fished the kayak anglers this time! Here are some pictures of the day...

Not all of them. I ended up with about 15-18 fish today. At around sunset I was landing 16-18" fish in 2-5' of water.
Thank you everyone for all the help.

Big thanks to all the volunteers. You guys are what makes this work. Special i love you to Marvin Lau aka Shicken. He showed up with 2 big hardwood smoked beef briskets. Best brisket I have ever tasted. Soft, moist and sexy.

This was my fitst ever HOW event and my first time meeting anyone from NCKA. I was able to get a few free hours to head up the hill and try to lend a hand.
Got there a bit before the vets but after everyone else and everything was already set up and breakfast was going. Was greeted by Raydon and his lovely wife, Luis, Sledge, Dwayne, Sarge and his lovely wife (who was landing fish left and right on the Ned rig), Rob, Sonny, Kyle, Matt, and many others who's names I can't remember.
All the kayaks were out, poles were rigged, and Rob was telling everyone about the fish he caught from the shore. :smt004 Conversed about swimming at Albion with Luis, and got to talk with all the other great guys and gals that showed up to help.
Wind was blowing by the time the vets got there but a few guys were out hooking up to some fish in the kayak, with Rob catching them near the launch (reoccurring theme throughout the day) giving the rest of us an idea where to set the vets up.
I got to help Yvette, who wanted to fish from the shore and had told me she hadn't fished since she was 15. Within a couple casts she was winging the senko out there and asking where she could buy a fishing license back home. :smt003 She wanted to bring her mother home some fish for dinner but unfortunately she didn't catch anything, not for a lack of trying. After some encouragement she hopped on a tandem kayak with Sarge and off they went. With all the vets fishing and everything under control, Luis threw me a pole and I was able to catch a small bass that I in turn cleaned and fileted to give to Yvette. That simple gesture seemed to make her day but really made mine. I filleted up another fish for a vet named Fred and took a few photos of him and his fish too.
Marvin then showed up with his giant Binford 5000 smoker and the two best damn smoked briskets I've ever had the pleasure of eating. Collard greens, pasta salad, and more.
Unfortunately not long after this, life (work), was leaving messages on my phone and I had to cut the day short.
What a GREAT event you guys throw, and I'm sure going to try to come help at the others.
All in all, I had a great day, helped make the day of at least one vet, and met some really good people, who I am sure I'll see next weekend up at Berryessa. Thanks for welcoming me in and introducing me to a great cause with great people.

Nice meeting you and glad you made it out. Most NCKA events are just as friendly and you will feel like you are meeting old friends.
Have fun at Berryessa.

Met some great people I think will be friends for a long long time. Thanks HOW and all you guys who made it happen. I look forward to seeing you guys more.

Way to go representing HOW guys. Hopefully y'all caught some fish.
We had our HOW-DFW campout last weekend and fished two of our private lakes about an hour and a half outside Dallas. Had about 10 veterans and 10 volunteers. Great times, good food and fish to be caught.
Got these little buggers on Friday and then commenced a fish kill on Saturday taking almost 50 crappie out of one of the lakes since the owner wants them controlled, aka., dead. Most were over 12 inches.
