Save the date!
July 18, 2015 in Monterey.
The official 2015 Pay It Forward Paddle event will be held @ the Monterey Bay Group BBQ Picnic area (same beach as MBK).
More details to come. Please let me know if you have any ideas for the event or contributions for the raffle or want to help out.
BACKGROUND
Pay It Forward (PIF) raises $ throughout the year in a variety of ways (AOTY/DOTY registration fees, annual PIF Paddle and Raffle, donations, raffles put on by events like GS and FreshKats etc).
Historically, this $ has gone to NCKA members battling cancer or other serious illness.
Here is a breakdown of how much $ has been generated via PIF efforts over the years and where the $ has gone:
2010: $6,000+ given to Mooch
2011: $9,000+ given to Mooch/Shicken
2012: $8,000+ given to Mooch/Shicken
2013: $10,000+ given to Mooch
2014: $15,300+ given to Porky's daughter Hailey
2015: $1,120 given to PAL, $2,000+ already in PayPal. Recipient TBD

Good call, Alfredo! We tried to pick the best date possible---that doesn't overlap with other NCKA or kayak fishing events, plus gives plenty of time before & after other major events (Albion), and no local events.
Well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Unfortunately, there is an event at Laguna Seca the same wknd (international Superbike bs). So the rates listed online are up for that wknd :-( But I'm pretty sure you can get a discount if you call the hotels and speak to them.
In the meantime, I am building a list of places to stay. I'll post it up today. And I'm trying to get a group rate deal from my buddy at the Portola.
Also, if you qualify for the Navy Gateway Inns, let me know and I can get you into the historic Del Monte Hotel http://www.nps.edu/Services/NGIS/stay.html
-
See you guys there.
I have a really nice DSLR camera bag that I never used to donate.
-
Will miss it again. Conflict with long-range fishing trip.
-
Attached is a list of Hotels/Motels/Inns in the area (Marina, Seaside, Monterey, PG). All of them have higher rates than normal [due to damn Superbike bs]. I would try for one that's on this list but doesn't show up on Expedia, Hotels.com, Kayak, etc. Best rate right now is the Thunderbird in Seaside @ $110. It seems like the jacked-up rates stop once you get to Salinas, Watsonville, or Gilroy...that's where you will find more reasonable rates for 7/17-18.
Nearby campgrounds include Veteran's Memorial Park in Monterey, Monterey Pines RV Park, Laguna Seca, Fremont Peak campground in Salinas, Marina Dunes RV Park, Moss Landing RV Park, Sunset State Beach in Watsonville, Saddle Mtn RV Park in Carmel Valley, KOA in Watsonville, and a handful in Big Sur. Also a handful of campgrounds in the Santa cruz area.
-
I'll keep it in mind.
Its the week before my Open Studio show, so it will depend on how organized I am............
-
See you guys there!
-
Expect another fat grip of shwag from NHS. Marked on the calendar. Can't wait!!

I didn't see Andys prunetucky mega ranch listed as a campsite.....will there be a burningman'esque campout where we can freely burn hippies, swill booze and deep fry animals?
-
Sure hope so! :smt044

I'm sure Andy will provide all that is Andy. Doubtful I'll bring the B.M. trailer setup since there isn't room for it there. I can borrow some Hippie clothes, hula-hoops & sparklepony gear if you want to play B.M. dress up ... <disclaimer> NONE of which I own myself :smt005
Oh yeah .... I got my ticket to the Playa Pilgrimage this year! :kick :white
-
I guess that would work bill....but did you read the part about burning hippies, not sure I wanna have to throw you in a fire pit, singing the sparkle pony tassels off your costume before you get to wear it at the playa. [emoji3]

Trust me ... I'm far from 'Hippie' status.
-
I'd say as far as burning hippies, Alshobie is fair game :smt044
-
Limited space PM me of interested. Got a new fire pit and the horse shoe pits ready to roll!

First post updated with more info. Let me/us know if you'd like to donate something to the raffle. Thanks!

Have the A-Hulls decided on a recipient for the PIF this year? It helps with my fund raising to have a story.
Thanks,
Deva

No recipient yet...which realistically is a good thing...
I know its hard to raise $ when you don't have a designated recipient...I feel the same way...but would MUCH rather have it be that way then the alternative, which is almost inevitable, of having one of our members battling cancer and needing financial help...
Here is the process for how we will determine a recipient:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=64354.0
And, FWIW, in addition to the $1,120 that we already gave to PAL we have over $3,031 in the PayPal (from AOTY/DOTY fees and Hobie raffle tix) AND another $1,879 from the GS9 raffle that PK has and will be transferring to me soon.
So, so far this year PIF has already raised $6,030 in 2015!!!!
The Paddle and main Raffle, and the Hobie raffle will undoubtedly bring in a lot more as well.
:smt008

Jim

Cool no biggie. Try and send me a PM when you do make a decision. I'm grateful that none of our sisters or brothers are in such a bad place that they need immediate assistance. It's kinda weird though. If nobody is chosen before the event will we just roll it into next year?
Thanks

We will for sure post here and I will send you a PM when the next recipient is chosen...
Yeah, we're basically making this up as we go along, but from my discussions with the rest of the Ahulls they feel very strongly that all $ raised for PIF will stay for PIF...
Obviously there are a ton of "worthy" causes out there like Heroes On The Water, folks battling cancer who aren't part of the NCKA community etc, but that's kinda what makes PIF different and special is that it is for OUR brothers and sisters on here and not for an organization or something "outside" of NCKA.
That is the reason why I did the T2B2 fundraiser seperate from PIF since Danny and Stephanie Clark are not NCKA members...
Hope the above makes sense...
Thanks again for all your help and support and looking forward to seeing you soon!!
:smt006
Sincerely,
Jim
ps..YakHopper gave me a SWEET rod and reel at GS9 for the PIF raffle!! :smt007 :smt007 I will get the name of the setup once I am home tonight. THANK YOU Eric!!

I would cancel plans, but im actually hosting an anual family picnic in memory of a friend who lost the fight to cancer not too long ago. Ive also have been raising money for cancer victims each year. Just want you guys to know that What you guys are doing is great. Keep at it. I will very surely participate in the next pif event.

So I am trying to set up my truck to travel with a kayak and my fifth wheel and plan on staying down that way for two weeks.
I looked through the thread but may have missed all the details.
Can someone please provide a map or explanation on where the event is happening at and if there are any parking issues to worry about.
Also just wanted to see what usually happens and in what order or time frame since I have not been to a PIF event yet. Is it a pay for meal or bring something to eat type event . Will everyone just be hanging out on the water or will people be back on shore doing something. Are folks planning on diving or fishing.
-
Parking RIGHT AT the event site is limited. Lots of nearby parking, though. Yes, plan on bringing some food/drink to share. Heck, bring a donation for the drawing too! :smt001
The event is a party on land and water. Some "fish" a bit during the event. This is generally just to look cool while hanging with the crew. No real effort is put forth into the "fishing" aspect of the day. It's more a sense of a family reunion with water, kayaks, food/drink & a beach! Good times!!!!

Awesome, sounds great. Will bring the wife and hopefully a new kayak to try out. Still not familiar with the location so is there an address it didn't come up on my phone search so maybe need different map program.

Search 'Monterey Bay Kayaks' at Del Monte Beach
I was searching MBK and honestly wasn't sure what that stood for. This helps. I have been to Monterey many times but never fished there. If I didn't ask I am sure I would have been at a different location.
Thanks

There are state park bbq's there I believe & usually someone from the group has one going too.

Will there be a grill avail for BBQ?
Yup, there is a big charcoal grill. And I expect there will be a few smaller propane grills available too.
If anybody is unsure what to bring...bring charcoal. W'll get the potluck thread going soon!

People will be coming from different areas and ready to fish as well so plan on sunrise!

Cant wait! Hope to get some OTW time, but if not it will be good to get out n see everyone!
-
Please let me know what time we should be there to meet you guys & what kind of rigs we need.
Thanks,
Tom
-
There will be some people launching at dawn. I'll probably keep it simple and just sling fish traps and drop shrimp flies tipped with squid. I'm there more for the company than the fishing but a few fish in cooler would be nice :)
-
I expect there will be 50+ kayaks launching from the beach between 6am and 8am. The people who are fishing will likely head towards 3 different areas: kelp beds off Cannery Row or the red mile buoy or north towards the beach hotel. Just show up and start getting rigged, while introducing yourself to other kayakers who are also getting ready to launch. Most of the people at this event will gladly show you where to go or what to use. This may potentially sound foreign or intimidating--but it's pretty common in this group. :-) A large group will congregate by the red mile buoy around 10-11am and sort of raft-together (sharing drinks & snacks etc) before returning to the beach for the potluck & raffle.
As far as fishing tackle, I would suggest the standard rockfishing setup: shrimpfly rig or a swimbait w/teaser above or iron jig with teaser above (3-6ozs) or just use a whole squid/sardine/mackerel.
-

Also a handful of campgrounds in the Santa cruz area.
The closest hotel to MBK (walking distance) with availability & somewhat-reasonable rates is the Fireside Lodge. Or the Monterey Oceanside Inn. Other hotels within walking distance include Hotel 1110, Stage Coach Lodge, the Monterey Hotel. The Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriot are pretty close too but higher rates.

Anyone have any idea what the water conditions are suppose to be like? I'm just trying to decide which yak I want to bring. :smt003

I am offering my couch to any yaker that needs a place to crash the night before the event. PM me if interested.

I forgot to mention I live just a few blocks from the beach so easy access and good safe street parking.

Just a heads up, there is an open house event at MBARI in Moss Landing on Saturday...in case the family doesn't want to hang out with a bunch of salty old fishermen on the beach.

That's soo cool! I wish they made one more streamline for less drag.

I know it's super last minute but ironically in the same vein I'll be donating a 5.5 mm wetsuit from Pacific Nalu. Whoever wins it can give Joe their size and get it ordered. My mom has been stoked on what we do at PIF ever since I told her about it last year. Her and my dad couldn't make it all the way from Montana this year but wanted to go halfsies on the suit to show their support

:smt044 I cant believe I missed this thread :(
I decided to take a friend of mine, who had never fished before let alone from a kayak, out from MBK. As we sat on the water we noticed dozens of kayaks everywhere. After talking to a few guys I realized what was up. It such a great event for such good causes, shame on me for missing in on the fun. I thought about joining everyone by the red can but they guy I was with was a bit unsure and preferred to stay where we were, plus we had to be packed and heading back by noon. But based on the huge crowd I am guessing it was a huge success. Count me in on the next one. Glad to meet some of you out there. :)

I was so impressed and humbled by the enormous amount of support, love , friendship you all have for each other ! Everyone came together for a great cause... I left emotionally taken back.... and without words. I apologize for not saying good by and most importantly how honored I was to meet everyone. I'm truly greatfuly and thankful that I was able to hang and fish with such incredible human beings. The last five months of my life has felt like a hurricane. I lost my father a month ago to colangial carcinoma (FUCK CANCER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), we found out four months ago..... its been a tough road. Sat was my second time on the water.....couldn't of been a more awesome day for such an awesome cause with such awesome people. ..... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU ... I wasn't just living that day but more like I felt alive again. ... till the next time.....same yak friends , same yak channel (69).....

The Ahulls and EVERYBODY who participated and contributed did a Fantastic Job on making PIF 2015 a success. Great Job Everyone.Great to see everyone having a Blast and all for a great cause. It just doesnt get any better. My Yucca Drink seem to be a great additive to the OTW fun and is definitely gonna be made now for future festivities. Yum! Wheeeww, Im still in a dazed. Great times...Enjoy the Pics
