To celebrate Joel "Mooch" Lotilla's 1yr Anniversay, the family thought that it would be nice to have a Fish & Chill on Oct 11, 2014 @ Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay, Ca.
Joel was always fond of 'Fish and Chills' and what better way to remember/honor him than to just kick back, have a BBQ/potluck and remember the good times we shared with Joel.
Weather permitting, we will make a paddle out to the Green Can and pay our respects to our brother; maybe drop a line in and see who comes up with the biggest fish. Nothing to technical or eleborate in the way of a tourny or contest, just maybe alittle "Money Better Friends" for those that are interested; MBFs were one of Joel's choice of competition. And just to make it fun (and since there are many shallow reefs in the area), "handline" reels only are will be used.
Then return back to shore, fire up the grill and kick back by the fire, and Chill... I will be trying to acquire the use of the area by the Half Moon Bay Kayak for this event; however, with the recent landscaping this may not be possible. If this is the case, we will just camp and chill in the upper lot.
One of Joel's wishes was to create a charity for 'Kids with Cancer' to get them out on the water and fish; so we will be trying to organize a raffle (or silent auction) to raise some money for his request. Please let me know if you would like to or can donate any new (or slightly used) items that we can raffle/auction. For those of you who have had previous events/tourneys, I would be wondering if you can contact you sponsors to see if they would be willing to make a donation to the Silent Auction; your help would be greatly appreciated.

are you talking about this kind of hand reel?

That would be the type in my opinion.

So... Is it just a group paddle, benefit raffle, and potluck... or is it a handline fishing derby too?
Late Sunday afternoon, Doug & Chris @ the Half Moon Bay Kayak Company stopped by the memorial at American Legion Hall and told me they want to work with NCKA to co-sponsor an annual PIF benefit in honor of Mooch. They said early October is an ideal time and suggested the same hall as the venue for the post paddle activities. I have to agree.
Is this that event?

Yes to the memorial paddle, yes to the benefit paddle & most definitely yes to the potluck... and yes to a Hand Line Derby (or MBFs)...
I have been speaking with Doug since the Mooch Strong Hookup and on Sunday before the paddle to the green can about doing something yearly... at since this was Joel's port of berth :smt003 and what better place to do it.
I agree using the hall again would be great, but beach front property would be ideal; even if we car camp in the lot and have the Weigh-in/potluck/raffle next to HMB Kayak.... still a long way to go and I will be working hard to improve the relationship with the Harbor Master again.... it hard to have folks camp at the Hall, drive back over HMB Kayak, launch and then load up to head back over to the hall....
if not, American Legion Hall here we come.....
I will be over at Half Moon Bay regularly over the next few months... so I will continue to work with Doug on this event.....
I mainly just wanted to get the word out to save the date... I'll post more info in the upcoming weeks.....

This will be a fun, fun thing and a great way to keep the memory and the passion alive. Cuban handlines on Ebay for like 10 bucks. I can sponsor swimbaits.
-
Right on... Glen. We are thinking the same way. That's scary. :smt003
Yes, Luis. Those Cuban YoYo Hand Reels are basically what we're talking about. Most of them are plastic like these and cost under $10. Some from the Philippines are made from wood.
-
I would love to find or build a lathe capable of turning some wooden ones. Wood feels so much better, looks cooler, and floats.

I got mine from the P-Islands; but was also looking into making them.... if I find a lathe, I'll have Eric spin me off a few.... :smt003

Lino/Tailwalk hooked me up. His dad found them in the PI.
-
I saw them made out of small bike rims in Brazil :smt005 Better build up some calus 'cause when a fish makes a run... It strips line and skin :smt003 Cat-fishing in Arkansas taught me that... Sounds like fun till you hook a big ling or shark!!! :smt044

Glenn,
How large a diameter are you looking for? I am sort of a "wood-wizard". My home woodshop has 2 wood lathes & my other shop at home has 2 metal lathes that I sometimes turn larger pieces of wood on for more "production" type stuff. My smaller wood lathes in my home woodshop are geared towards more hand-crafted finishes.
Let's get together & brainstorm some ideas. I'd gladly turn some out if you get me a few dimensions of what you are looking for.
~Bill :smt006
-
IMO the 8" outer diameter is about perfect.
-
Eric ...
8" OD with about a 5-6" inside dia? How wide are you thinking. Bear in mind, the wider the more prone wood will be to cracking, breaking, etc...
Bill
-
I was wrong. The OD is 10", ID 6.5", 2" thick, and the channel is 1.5widex1.5"deep.
Not sure what it's made of but teak, I think... It has held up well so far after repeated wettings.
-
Bill, if you do end up turning a few I'd like to buy one, let me know. - Tony
-
Eric,
Thanks for the awesome dimensions. Let me see what I can come across for wood, etc... I'll keep you up to date on my progress. Maybe I can squeze a little side project in the next couple weeks .... who needs sleep.
Bill
-
Yamobthere!
Thank you for setting this up, Glen. You're a good man!
-
Just worked up a quick CAD model. Let me know what ya think. Used the dimensions Eric gave me as a baseline. Added a little taper to the spool to add a bit of strength.
-
That's awesome!!
95 lb line is what I'm using and it is pretty comfortable to handle with bare hands, with a 40lb top shot.
Sorry for the threadjack, but I love my handline, (thanks, Lino!)
We'll be there, Glen!!!
-

Wow.. Bill....you're quick. That's it!
Perhaps we should we should start a "handlines" thread in the "Craftsmen's Corner" or "General Fishing Tips" section. This could go on forever, and we wouldn't want it to take away from the main subject of a memorial paddle. Handling is a fun topic.

No problem. I'm also getting excited about handline reels all over again. Here's the "Handline Reels" thread I started in our tackle section:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=50134.0 (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=50134.0)
Bill, Eric... "DIY Wood Handline Reels" would also make great new topic in our "Craftsmen's Corner" section.
-
Glenn, Chuck, as far as the back n forth from AL to launch area you could think about setting up a shuttle. I'm sure some of the wives who aren't kayaking would love driving folks to and fro.
And the AL provides an area like Albion, Shelter Cove etc with the advantage of being of the wind AND access to the outdoor kitchen, tables and chairs. Them folks at AL LOVED US, they consider NCKA as part of their fishing family and so said they. It wouldn't take much to fine tune this for a anual event or any other. For those who like parking lots can still have it.
-
Might be mahogany from PI. We lived in Taiwan when I was a kid. Lots of teak and mahogany.
Great work up. That's amazing. Gloves would be good, no?
-

I'll Take one for sure. On the two I have, one side of the reel is more tapered to the outside, so you can cast or drop line without having to roll it all out. Does that make sense? Like a line holder for a kite....

i will like to get one of the wood ones if someone makes them, i tried looking for wood ones on the web but no success.
i will buy a plastic one too just to get familiar with it. or just to put it on the shelf in my garage.

With October fast approaching, time to get planning for the celebration for our brother!
Unfortunately, with the current family events I am currently experiencing, I do not believe I can provide the necessary time to manage such an event and properly pay tribute to our brother.
Therefore, I am turning over the reins for the event to Frankfishing; who, with the support of the A-hulls, will continue the planning and organization of this event.
With the miraculous progress my granddaughter has made over the past few days and her early release from the hospital this Monday, I have ask to once again resume the responsibility of overseeing the planning for Joel's Memorial Celebration.
I will be meeting with the Rachel soon to discuss her ideas on how to beat Celebrate her brothers life.
Please stay tune for more information regarding this event.
Thanks guys for your support...

Joel's neices had them made; but I think they are all gone....
BTW: you guys getting you handlining skills in gear? Got some e practicing in at Albion :smt003

I found the perfect hand line reel:
Now I just need to add ball bearings and carbontex drag to it and I will be set. :smt003

locals in Nicaragua were doing well in the surf with a piece of what looked like 1"x6" with a handle cut in it on one end -- just hand wind the line around the end of the board.
they were usually tossing spoons or live bait but were catching some nice jack crevale (sp?)

Ya, saw the same thing in Costa Rica,, it's actually easier to throw the bait by hand-line IMHO…
this young fellow's piece of wood out fished me and my Calcutta 400….

G-Whiz i sent $25 to your paypal to support the kids with cancer fishing trip.
Coming from a cancer family, I think joels/G-Whiz's request below is amazing and would love to see this happen, were broke, but I cant think of a better way to spend $25, pretty cheap to stoke out a bunch of sick children!
Quote "In addition, one of Joel's wishes was to create a charity for 'Kids with Cancer' to get them out on the water and fish; so we will be trying to organize a raffle (or silent auction) to raise some money for his request. Prize List:
New Banks Board with harness strap (donated by G-Whiz)
Mooch Better Boat Donation List:
G-Whiz $20.00
Porky $25

G-Whiz i sent $25 to your paypal to support the kids with cancer fishing trip.
Thanks Brent!!! I was just getting ready to do a decal run to raise money and you beat me to the punch; guess I shoulda quit lagg'n!
Instead of doing the raffle/donation thing, I thought I would raise money for Joel's charity they way I used to raise money for him in the past; so if you interested in donating to Joel's cause and/or getting a new vinyl decal set for your kayak, here's the link:

Update: I have asked Hojo (Howard Joe) to take over & manage Joel's "Kids with Cancer Fishing Charity" and he has graciously accepted; thank Hojo, you are the right person for this task and Joel would be honored that your are overseeing it!
Vic (VK): got your funds in the mail today; I'll make sure they go over to Hojo. Mooch Better boat had prior commitments, but a friend (who shuttle the other vessel) should be able to help out; and it can go to that or to Joel's foundation, if thats ok with you...
Also, if anyone wants to contribute to Joel's "Kids with Cancer" charity, I am doing a fund raiser to to charter a boat to take kids with cancer out fishing; goal is to raise between $750-$1000 to charter a 6-pack or better.
For a $25 donation, you'll get a vinyl of you screen name for you kayak; here's the link: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=58690.0

Any update on details/logistics?
Paddle out in AM, fish, visit green can, back to shore for potluck/chill?
Considering diving outside of jetty and seeing if any Lings are hanging down there...I know viz will suck but still might be fun. Anybody ever seen any decent fish caught close in there?
:smt006
Sincerely,

Considering that one of IceColdChuck's coolest posts was about diving in HMB for lead sinkers, I'd guess he'd be your best bet :)

Any update on details/logistics?
Paddle out in AM, fish, visit green can, back to shore for potluck/chill?
In a nut shell, yes... Only time frame i'm working on is "when to meet at the green can"; its gonna be based on whether or not I can get the family out there... my friend says he's most likely a go, but if something unexpected arises, then I'm screwed if I promise the family a ride...
The "Chill" will be happening all through the afternoon/evening; since there will be folks not interested in leaving the comforts of land, they will remain i the parking lot...
Not sure what the parking lot scene looks like now or what it will be like in the next few weeks with commies stacking gear, but we will all just try and park as close to one another as possible; maybe towards the back/hillside of the center lot like last year....
No real set time for potlucking; cook when you're ready, eat when you're hungry.... Mooch style!!
-
I just sent $ via paypal, Glen. I'll send you a PM regarding the vinyl decal. I'm not sure if I really want my screen name on my boat...always thought it was kinda kooky. :smt003 But perhaps something else to stick on my truck (like Oakland A's or 49ers or O'Doyle Rules).
-
I just moved up off the wait list for a race and am now officially registered for the Oct 11. Sadly, won't be able to join event this year. Will be running in Moochie's honor.

Will be running in Moochie's honor.

You need to get a Team Mooch jersey bro. :smt002
All the cool kids have em.
:smt003
Good luck in your race!!
:smt006
Sincerely,

-
Yeah i was thinking about a memorial jersey. where/how? did you make yours?
thing is, its an ultra distance, and oz = lbs. so if it ain't gossamer material, no go.

Jim, you will be missed.... Hope all is well... Loved the pictures of you and your girls playing together... Stuff that can't be missed...
-
Unfortunately me and the fam won't make it - doing an east coast trip. Best wishes to all.
-
Damn Jim. Was looking forward to seeing and fishing with you. You are my "Hali Helper".
-
I'll honor Joel the best I can in my own way...
I believe you honor him everyday by keeping his memory alive and in you heart! It's not where you honor, just that you do that counts; you will however, be greatly missed!
-----------------------------------------------------------------
With a little over one week before the "Fish & Chill" at the Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay, thought I would share the tentative game plan for the weekend.
On Friday, several of Mooch's kayaking friends will start rolling in to the Harbor Parking Lot to start the pre-party (I'll be rolling the RV in around 10am); even heard rumors that some of the ole-skool boys (Loose Screws!!) will be down even sooner...
Saturday October 11th, we will attempt to honor the "Fish" part of the 'FnC' by heading out and testing out skills hand-lining fish for the "Chill". On shore (actually in the p-lot), landlock folks will probably already be starting the "Chill" portion of the event; which will most likely be continue all day and into the evening, with folks sharing food, treats and drinks throughout the day.
Roughly around 1pm, kayakers will paddle/peddle/sail there way to Joel's resting place at the Green Can; where we will pay respects to our beloved brother, Mooch.
After which, we will make our way back to land, share in each other's company, dine on some great food and toast to our brother...
Hope you can come out and join us!!!
If you have any questions, please feel free to PM. (on second thought, dont bother me, just show up :smt044)

First off, the "Beach Front Property"is still off limits for use other than loading/unloading; hoping there was still a small chance to use it, tried to wait until the last minute update. But now, it's officially a no go; so we will be chilling somewhere in the upper lot.
Secondly, the salmon bite is still going on INSIDE the harbor!!!! Spinners are the go to lure; my buddy cant make them fast enough for the tackle shop at the harbor to keep in stock....
Pot Luck: In order to give those who are out on the water, time to fish, pay respects to Mooch and the get back on land to cook, was thinking maybe 5:00pmish for the "Official" potluck. For those that are planning to just "Chill", potluck will be all day for you :smt007!
Supplies: Will need a couple of tables to put the food and supplies on; so if you can bring a folding table, it would be greatly appreciated.
Also, Mooch was never fond of paper/plactic product (paper cups, plates, utensils, etc.) waste, so if you can avoid or limit the usase of them, I think he would smile alot bigger down upon us.....
Weather & waves look good for this weekend too :smt007!

I will have A table and the fryer. :smt006. What kind of spinners?

Thanks Andy!!!
If its what we use to make before, its like this one; one is weighted, one is not....
-
Other than the barbed treble I guess it would work.

Where can I get this, weight or not weight ?
I know I need to pinch the barb close. Do I tie this directly to fishing line ?
-
Gonna head to the tackle shop and pick some up. fairly light rod should be fun....Thanks for the heads up!
-
Where in the harbor have they been targeting them?
-
Other than the barbed treble I guess it would work.
pretty sure a barbless treble wouldn't work either :smt003

Not exactly what I meant Ben. I meant no treble plus the one shown has barbs. Dude, why you always so mean? :-)
-
Single barbless hook on a Mepps flying "C" Spinner you can buy at any store. Or easier cut 2 legs off the treble and smash the barb... Solutions are out there. Just don't ask Ben, He's mean :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
Look here!!!!! Found what we want!!!! http://www.cabelas.com/product/Meppsreg-Flying-C-Spinner/1342355.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D%26No%3D20%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dspinners%2Bbait%26Ntx%3Dmode%252Bmatchallpartial%26WT.mc_id%3DGOOGLE%257Cfis_hard%2Bbaits_in-line%2Bspinners%257CUSA%26WT.srch%3D1%26WT.tsrc%3DPPC%26WT.z_mc_id1%3D43700004568462233%26WTz_st%3D%26WTz_stype%3DSP%26gclid%3DCLC0lqjVm8ECFeHm7AodpEEARQ%26gclsrc%3Daw.ds%26recordsPerPage%3D20%26rid%3D20%26search%3Dspinners%2Bbait%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts&Ntt=spinners+bait&WTz_l=PPC

Yeah, he uses either single hooks on his spinners; guess I gotta make me a couple of new spinners for this weekend.....
-
Okay, this is what they are using (not the bottom one thou)
-
What size line do you recommend?
-
You should be good with 15-20#
-
What size line do you recommend?
He says they are only running 6-8lbs inside the harbor, so 12 lbs test should be good; but if you venture outside the jaws, you might want heavier.....

Doesn't look like anyone will be in town at Half Moon bay with the pumpkin festival going on! :smt005 Plan on major traffic I suppose. Get there early and leave late!

I got stuck in that traffic last year. Took me HOURS to get out of it.

With the return of Fleet Week, most people will be in the Bay Area; so it shouldn't be to bad.
The to be safe, it's best to leave before 4pm or after 8pm... That's usually the rush on hwy 92....

There will still be a little extra traffic mid-day & early afternoon since most of the pumpkin patches will be open & families heading to their festivities. Safe travels everyone. Wish I could join in but I have 10 hours of driving awaiting me that day.

Doesn't matter! Traffic will be hellish because of the pumpkin farms. The pass will be clogged if you don't get there early or leave too soon.

My CSFC buddy just stopped by and gave me the 411 on the HMB salmon; he says they were getting the all around the docks, casting spinners.
He dropped me off some firetiger patterns; which seem to be the hot bite!
Heading up tomorrow am after traffic and will be chilling all weekend long!
-

Thanks! I just picked him up a body glove shorty, though. He's only four. Hopefully it fits him and his little sister will be able to use it when she gets a bit older, too.
Figured for $45 I couldn't go wrong.
-
We dropped off the trailer tonight and came back home, wanted to et a spot with some grass (dirt) in front for the pooch. Frank n Bunny and Dave n Pam are already there and set up. Got my hand line ready and some spinners for inside the harbor. Of course Laura has 9lbs of Pulled Pork all cooked and ready to throw down!

Glen,
Thanks for putting this together. It was a good time. Slow bite, but I did not care. Home safe now.
-
We had a great time, even though we showed up way late, the party went on until the late hours. The food never stopped flowing, in true NCKA fashion. From pork belly's to roasted turkey with mashed potatoes, and yellow tail poki and fried bananas, it was awesome :smt003 Good times for sure, and much love all around especially from Andy! :smt002 I'm sure there are still people there right now cooking up something good! :smt044

Awesome job Glen on putting on the Mooch fish and chill together. Wished I could have stayed longer but I had to show up to another party. Thanks again Hojo and Rob for gifting me with some fish to share with my family. They all said thank you as well. Looking forward to seeing all of you again soon.
Jedmo
ps, I left my blue chair at Bill's camp. Glen, would you mind keeping it for me till I see you this weekend?
-
I had fun.
-
It was really good to see everyone. I learned a lot about cooking a weber turkey for the first time. Thanks Yôda for putting it together. I got yo see Sharky and his boat. Awesome stuff. Love you all.
-
Glen, thanks for organizing this Fish 'n Chill honoring our beloved friend "Mooch" who we will never forget.
It was great to see everyone! Thanks to everyone for the great food and good times. Ariel, thanks for the test drive on the bike, it was tons of fun.
Al, thanks for the pictures and thanks to everyone that will probably being posting more later.
-
With donations and proceeds from the silent auction, Mooch's wish to take kids with cancer out for a day of fishing garnered $987. Thanks to all who contributed and participated in the festivities. Ariel's monster bike almost stole the show.

Got there way late… like on Sunday at 09:30 :smt001 But found some of the leftovers at Glens Spot! ThankBro! for the fish! And thanks ChuckE for the Breakfast Porage, Yummy! Fishmaster1; thats the first time we didn't drink a beer together , Hahaa, but at least we shared a man hug :smt003 Ghost; I like you'r new rig :smt023 Looks really comfortable. And for all the other NCKA Brothers and Sisters that i didn't get to chill with…Next time :smt001
tried my two hours trying to long line a salmon but no luck today, so went to plan "B" and purchased on of these.
With the cod Glen gifted me and the Albacore i purchased, I managed to take a cooler full of some fish! :smt003
-
That was so much dang fun! Highlights for me were learning to throw my net finally, although no anchovies were around, (I did get a couple small perch so I know it works), and riding Ariel's crazy contraption.
Food was crazy delicious, as usual. The wild pig n potatoes... Chuck's pansit! Tiny pie! Tony's wife's pecan pie without the goo! Rich's bacon wrapped venison jalapeno bombs! FisHunter pasta salad with homegrown tomatoes. Ariel's famous pork bellies! Keil's bbq.... Jeeez... It was just silly. Everytime I thought I was done I couldn't help myself and it would start all over again. And then there were banana lumpia with nutella and whipped cream. I think I have a problem.
Mooch woulda loved every second.
-
Wow, looks like everyone had a blast. Wish we could've been there. :smt010 Wtg Glen on organizing this hookup. Fun times for sure.

I am so blessed to have such a wonderful core group of friends that share both in my joys and my sorrows. We all lost a dear friend a year ago and all of you coming together yesterday to help honor and celebrate his life is a tribute to the love and compassion we have as a community.
Joel was special to all of us and I sincerely hope that he felt the love we share at one of his favorite places to chill. And “Chill” we did! I think fishing took a back seat to the chill portion, but that’s how it always is at all Mooch’s “Fish & Chills”; just kicking back, enjoying each others company, reminiscing about the past and enjoying great food.
As others had mention, food just kept appearing on the table; wave after wave, it kept coming…. Never could remember when I ate so much in one afternoon or at any event. Thank you all for an awesome potluck spread!
Btw: one of the advantages of hosting a potluck, all the kickbacks you get at your camp! No Host Margarita drinks from Hobie-Dave, Double-Chocolate Cup from Tiny, you own pack of Shang-hi lumpia from Pee-Pee, Garlic Mash Potatoes togo from Craig, fudge brittle for Bunny, Imported Chocolates from Sonny & Faith and all the sampling that went on before the food ever hit the table; some never even made it to the table!!!
Into the evening, folks gathered at varies different locations and as I walked between all the groups and ease dropped on conversations, it was apparent what impact Joel had on our lives by bringing us all together; both when he was with us and even after he left.
He will forever be apart of me and I strongly look forward to seeing him again…
Special thanks to Sharky for generosity in taking the Rachel and her family on the water; may Mooch bless you with calm seas and generous bounties for you kindness.
Thank you to those who donated and participated in the Silent Auction and Fund Raiser for Joel’s Charity; it’s a great start to fulfilling his dream charity.
To my HAC brothers, thanks all your help and support!
Again, thank you all for a unforgettable weekend; and may Joel be smiling down you for days to come!
(i took some pictures, but I'll post them tomorrow; I going to sleep :smt003)

What a great day to be OTW.
-
Was great to meet and fish with some of you guys in person on Saturday. Thanks to everyone who made all that seriously delicious food - and I just caught the afternoon appetizers. The main course sounds like it was phenomenal. I'm just a newcomer, but I can already see that the camaraderie of this group is strong!
-
Looked like another great NCKA event. Just reading this made me miss my friend Joel. I can't believe a year has gone by already.
Glen thanks for putting on the event and sorry I could not join y'all but the commute would have killed me; coming from Texas.
Great to see all your smiling faces. :smt003

Well,
as all of us who went out to the Green Can know, Mooch sent a couple of Ambassadors to say hi…
I'm new to Go pro so if you want to skip to the appearance, go to the 3:45 second mark… but catch whale in first part of video by distant yakers
Thanks Mooch, got my blood pumping!!!
