- Bushy's monster calico
- Spending less than an hour on the big boat on all of day two

You guys who had to bail missed the best conditions the Islander has seen IN YEARS! We got to fish the weather side of the Island that they haven't been able to hit since our original Unfinished Business tour.
I caught halibut, sheepshead, whitefish, kelp bass, calicos, and a giant blue perch. The crew busted their asses off to take care of our every need. NCKA teamwork was flowing.
I'd go again tomorrow.
-
OK, I'll dump all the fish porn I have on you. Once again - I wish I would've gotten more pics.

Some more.

It's already evident from the quick reports and pics that you guys had an incredible trip. I saw your boat coming in yesterday morning as I was paddling out to the bait barge. Left my camera in the car, otherwise would have taken a pic.

Great Crew

Awesome pictures!!! Keep them coming...!
-
On Sunday evening there were small boils popping up all around a few of us. The conditions were incredible and the only thing that woulda topped that as the closer to our trip is if someone would've hooked up on something.
-
buts'&goats?......what else?
Congrats Al on the Halibut!! :smt007

Holy shitballs.

I was the last one in on Sunday evening and snapped a bunch of pics of the boat as I did one last troll around it.

(Although somebody probably won't be too happy trying to remove that.) :smt009

Great Crew
This picture is the best shot I've seen that captures the crew and the entire feeling associated with the trip. These guys love to fish and help folks fish too. There is a bad ass mojo associated with this shot. Great picture Dustin. The crew needs to see this.
Loosing that goat killed me. It was 2x bigger tun the 5 pound guy I brought in. I swear he made no attempt to get under him with the gaff but rather just smacked him off the hook. I was bummed but not mad at all. Still got to reel in 5 goats, just lost the biggest.
My dad is the guy in the red jacket. He had a great time. He said at one point Saturday that he had to prep for a meeting Tuesday (today). I asked him Sunday, when are you going to prep for your meeting at work? He said, "Fuck work, this fishing is awesome!"
Our anchor spot Sunday morning was super fishy. Every drop yielded something within ten seconds. Great times for sure. I'll post up a few stories later when I get free time.
No pics or video, The Green Fish GoPro Mount was a piece of crap and broke.

:smt004

So why didn't your t shark win the jackpot? Don't get me going but a 50# t shark out fights a 50# WSB and it isn't close.
-
So many positive aspects to going on a trip like this. Highlights were finally learning how to pronounce polepole--it's poleypoley; meeting bushy and finding he has more gray hair then me (hehe); knowing how to catch squid and use them as bait; gaining confidence to be able to use a three way without tangling, and many other fish related subjects. The OEX people put on a class ride and they make you feel welcomed from embarking to disembarking. Food was always timely and good. Jersey knocked it out of the park. Fishing was solid. In fact, I heard Busy state at one time. this is just silly fishing. I think he meant that all you had to do is put anything down, and a calico would strike it. I caught calicos, whitefish, sheepshead, boccacio, rosey, and other unidentified fish. Oh, did I mention there were a lot of calicos. It is amazing to be able to talk fishing from the moment you get up, till the moment you hit the bed with people of like mind. I was surrounded by fish addicts like me. I loved it.

He caught the thresher on day one. Captain said sharks don't count towards the jackpot when we launched.
I was nervous. :smt044

That's pussy BS IMHO. Sorry, I have caught big WSB and T sharks from a kayak and there is no comparison. No offence Joe because I have a ton of respect for your skills. Just saying as far as beating you down...

Pat didn't bring the shark in anyways. It was tail caught and drug him out a long way, out to 1000 feet deep. It had to be brought back by the Dingy. He fought that bugger to over two hours.

Btw, just had calico fish taco's and some sesame seed pan seared YT on a balsamic vinegar salad... OMG it was good!!! :smt003

Make em stop PolePole! This thread is too much. Ive been staring for hours! :smt005
WoW U Guys...........
-
FYI ... the Islander was talking about running a 7 day kayak fishing trip next year ... Cedros and Benitos. Something to start saving for ...
-Allen
-
Wow! Whoa! What a trip! This Islander trip to SCI worked out perfectly.
Had alot of fun hanging out with cool people and fishing and diving for hours!!!!!
I dove the first day of the trip and spent alot of time looking for my target species (YT, WSB, or Halibut). I got a glimpse of a WSB tail as I turned in some kelp..it took off fast! I was just happy that I was sticking to my plan and actually saw a sign :smt003
Second day I decided to dedicate to kayak fishing. My second drop of the day was when I felt the pull of something big! Bam,bam and the line started to peel. It felt like the fish was going in circles around a column of kelp because I could see and feel the line moving in circles. I just maintained my composure and focused on not breaking off this fish. After about 25 minutes I could not feel a fish on the end of my line anymore........My last resort would be to cut some kelp with the with the line and try to break free. I released my kelp clip, pointed the Hobie towards the open ocean and started pedaling like a madman! I finally feel the kelp break free and a dead weight on the line.
At about 15ft I see color, white, I had no idea what it was. Kiel says "WSB bro!" We team up and land the fish. This was my first WSB and on the Islander trip! Thanks Kiel!
I caught it with a 6oz Scrambled egg yoyo jig w/ two live squid pinned on the treble. Lucky13 has named this setup a "Squid Orgy!"
Anyways, this trip was fun! Alot of experience with this group of kayak anglers. I did not see anyone fall over or need any emergency assistance :smt004
Thanks for driving Ernest!
Enjoy pics.
-
:smt004 More!
-
One of my favorite parts of the trip was the "On the water" service from the Islander crew.
We could call on the radio for bait, snacks, and beverages :beer3
I felt spoiled out there!
-
Oh, I was stoked for Dustin. For reals. Like I told him, I think he deserved to win the JP for his 25lb halibut. That's an awesome fish and I didn't think twice about it. Then after finding out he split his winnings with the crew I was even more stoked for him! (yeah, the truth is out, that guy is crazy generous. sorry to blow your cover bro :smt044)
Plus its true...I did call in the closer. It was getting dark and I had battled that beast to a stalemate in 1000FOW about 3 miles offshore & away from the boat, when we made a call to bring in the skiff.
Once they arrived, I said "15 more minutes and I'll jump in the skiff." And believe me, I pulled on that sucker HARD...much harder than I thought the line (much less my crappy knots) could ever withstand. But I wasn't gaining any line, so I hopped into the skiff and fought brought it up using a technique where the skipper reversed for 100yds while I kept my thumb on the spool--causing the fish to rise as the scope of the line went horizontal, then we'd gun it forward while I reeled like crazy. We did that 3 times before getting it boatside.
It turned out to be tail hooked by my bigass Rapala, errr Storm lure (I'm still not sure what the model is called but it's a comically-large rapala knockoff). My line wasn't wrapped--the lure was just solidly embedded in the tip of its tail. We slid a noose up my rod and onto the shark's tail when it went apeshit and the lure went flying past my head. For a split second, I thought the fish was gone. Until the skipper, Jason, lunged backwards yanking on the rope in an incredibly swift move to lasso the shark's tail! It was awesome. Whew I was stoked; I could finally breathe a sigh of relief... and scream out in victory!
After securing the rope on the fish, I climbed back into my yak and began the long paddle back to the boat while they dragged the shark back behind the skiff.
Caught her on a 6'9" Shimano Teramar Inshore rod paired with a Abu Garcia Revo Toro reel and 50lb PowerPro braid. Trolling a bigass Rapala knockoff in about 100FOW.
Btw thanks to Jeff, Tim, and my new wingman Bushy for the support as we covered about 3 miles chasing down that beast! Seriously couldn't have done it without you guys.

After being OTW for like 9 hours, I decided to call it quits. So I paddled over to Jeff and asked him to take some pics of my fish. After handing him my camera, I went to retrieve my fish from the tankwell when I noticed something was wrong...they were gone!!! Somehow my game clip detached from my kayak and I lost a stringer with 5 whitefish, 2 sheephead, and a calico bass!
As I'm furiously searching around the perimeter of my yak for my stringer, I hear Jeff giggle and blurt out "Say Cheese!" Whatadick!
(http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq217/Sin_Coast/2013%20Islander%20trip/IMGP3351_zpsa1a7c421.jpg) (http://s449.photobucket.com/user/Sin_Coast/media/2013%20Islander%20trip/IMGP3351_zpsa1a7c421.jpg.html)
Feeling like a complete bumbletard for losing my stringer, I dejectedly thought 'Screw it, I'm going back to the boat.' But I decided to troll that bigass Rapala knockoff for cuda or threshers while I paddled back to the Islander. We made it three-quarters of the way back and I just wanted to get on the boat and take a dump. Then IT happened. I finally hooked up on this crazy lure I've been hiding in my tackle box for years. The rest is history, but this is the last thing I remember taking a picture of--this little canyon was really cool looking.
(http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq217/Sin_Coast/2013%20Islander%20trip/IMGP3355_zps5325af79.jpg) (http://s449.photobucket.com/user/Sin_Coast/media/2013%20Islander%20trip/IMGP3355_zps5325af79.jpg.html)
-
Wow Pat, that's one hell of a fishing story. Were you targeting Threshers with the Rapala in the first place?
Yup, either threshers or cuda. I've been bringing this lure with me for years and use it while trolling back from the beach hotel to MBK or out in Carmel...hoping for a thresher, striper, or whatever else is brave enough to hit it.
Since the shark never jumped, we didn't know what it was. Bushy thought maybe BSB; rumor on the boat was batray; I was praying to jeebus for a bluefin; and the skipper called it---a tail-hooked thresher.

More likely bandit sea lions than sharks. Guadalupe Island can host lots of landlords because of the potential for big tuna there.

I had the best fishing trip I've ever had in a long long time. Spending three straight days with 20+ great fishing buddies is just priceless. Couldn't have asked for better weather. The Islander crew was top notch. Everybody was extremely courteous and worked extremely hard to accommodate us. Thanks for organizing this trip Allen. I would do it again in a heartbeat, if my wife would let me :smt003

Others were chuckling at me, but hell, I'm on a boat, I'm going fishing. Made believers out of them when I hooked up a short butt. Hell yeah!

I guess I also forgot about reporting Friday's journey to the place called La Jolla. Bushy and I met up with fishkraft, Gary, Raydon, and baitman at the launch. It was a humbling experience. Bait was easy to make just past the closure buoys. A mix of greenbacks, spanish, and large dines. Worked our way out to the spot. The area was loaded with bait (spanish), but no one was seeing any yellowtail. Bushy had a good take, but no love on the hookset. I was harassed by the sea lions. Slowly one by one the PB's started leaving as well as the few kayaks that were out there. I saw some boils in close to the kelp, and decided WTF, nothing else is going on. Got to the area for nothing. I convinced myself they were calicos, too small to take the large macks we were offereing. Fishkraft decided to go in and gives me remaining bait as I was on my last mack. No sooner did he leave and I hooked up on a runner. It made a beeline to the kelp and popped off in 30 seconds. :smt009 While I was reeling on my line, my other rod goes off, right into the kelp. :smt010 Tried to work it free, but no bueno. Got my hook back, pinned a bait back on it and sent it back down. Seconds later and it was on a run. Fuck! Kelped again. :smt010 I could feel the fish still on, so spent some time trying to work it free. Eventually, I stopped feeling the fish and ended up breaking off the line. :smt010 :smt010 :smt010
The best part of the day was my surf in. I caught a nice wave and started picking up speed. Perhaps a little too much speed as my bow started perling. Dug the brace in and side surfed the rest of the way in. Now that was fun!
Paul Lebowitz met us at the beach and we enjoyed a nice lunch and got some intel on how to fish the Island. Nice to see you Paul. Always a pleasure and thanks for lunch! :smt006

Got back Friday evening. Turned the trip into a great family vacation. Have some great pics of the loading and OTW. Have some issues with this computer for photo editing. Will post pics Monday.
It was really awesome to have the time to expand friendships with NCKA brothers
Saw some yak loaded cars in the lot upon arrival, but was the first to unload and I was the last to leave. Thanks to the brothers who kept me company as I waited for wifey to arrive. It was good that I was last to leave since a couple brothers left gear behind. Our crew and all the people at Fisherman's Landing & Tackle were really cool. The Fishermans Landing people were proactive and had already secured the left behind gear. I just had to ask the right people for Morgan and Sin Coast's stuff. Guess they are used to tired fishermen leaving stuff behind. Fishing was a bit slow for me, but I did manage a couple hog Calicos. Thought I had Bushy beat in the hog Calico department, but his bigem turned out to be a pound or so ahead of mine.
Interested in another trip . Three days OTW would be great. I think the price of a 7 day etc might be a bit much for the average NCKAer. Would be great to have a family subgroup. Family that can hang together while we fish and then stay after to enjoy all SD has to offer, My folk came down and saw the Zoo Safari Park while I was out and we saw the SD Zoo and Sea World twice after the trip. Didn't even make it to th Beach. That's why I think a family add on would be great. It's such a long 9.5 - 10 hour drive and the extra time made it more enjoyable. A family option would definitely get us some WAF points.

damn that's looks like the funnest thing ever, I think I'm in the wrong line of work.

Big Hammer doesn't have an 8". They do have a 9", which was designed specifically for boiler bass.

Rockhopper and gang this is an insanely EPIC report!!! Much props and thanks for sharing.

Dustin had this offshore thing down! Rigged on the boat before launching and always at the right place for a photo op. Everytime I saw Dustin, I was motivated to stay focused on fishing. :smt004

Anybody missing an Extrasport ball cap?
I ran out of there Monday morning and left a bag behind. Jeff Morgan (No relation, Pat's buddy) had his mom and dad drop it off on their way north yesterday. So….thanks to Jeff for running back and getting my bag and coordinating the delivery back to me. Jeff and Ian are solid dudes. I think we may get to fish with them up here at some point.

It may be mine. But it's OK......I'm sporting a Morgan Consulting LLC ball cap right now.. Nice hat!

Wow. You guys had great weather and awesome fishing. I was out there on the Islander a day before you and had to deal with constant 15 knot north winds.
Though I did manage my first legal Halibut of 36".
Fun times.

Finally got some pics from Ian.
One last glory shot with my thresher.
Btw I had some more for dinner tonight...bbq in a marinade of soy sauce, brown sugar, white pepper, vinegar, minced garlic, red pepper flakes, soy vay, and fish sauce. It was glorious.

I forgot to mention ... I knew this was going to be a good trip before we even left the dock. As we were on the boat waiting around to leave the dock, I pulled out a rod and started casting a fluke, bouncing it back along the bottom. Others were chuckling at me, but hell, I'm on a boat, I'm going fishing. Made believers out of them when I hooked up a short butt. Hell yeah!
-Allen
I was there. Didn't see it. No pictures? :smt010
