Post by: FISHALLDAY on November 17, 2012, 02:38:20 PM
Heads up for anyone looking to purchase their 2013 fishing license early.

Just stopped by the local Walmart and purchased my fishing license for 2013. Price is now $45.93 instead of $44.85.

The temporary license PDF is much smaller than the licenses we have been getting since they computerized the transactions.  Maybe the actual mailed license will be downsized this year?

Not only that how many years is your drivers license good for. Fishing use to be a means of feeding your family, and recreation for everyone. When the licensees reach over 100. per year then what. Maybe we need to see why the costs are going up. is it Because less people fish due to MLPA. And there for we have to pay more to keep F&G department going. I buck at a time it has been this way since I have been fishing started at under 10.00 for me. Oh and you could catch what you wanted no extra tags. I haven't bought a hunting licence in years I bet they will be out of sight.  :smt013

Just totaled everything up 120.00 if I wanted to fish everything. Waiting to see when they add Crab tags.  :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt013 :smt012

So they put restrictions on how u can fish for sturgwons AND they wanna charge u for the tag huh? One question that I have tgough, since sturgeon fishing is restricted to barbless hooks in 2013, does that mean one rod only? And as far as I know... As long as you are fishing in the delta with a shrimp bait... U are considered targetying sturgwon. That means whenever u fish in the delta, unless u are using a lure, u are regulated to one rod?

Bought my lifetime license 12yrs ago for $490. That means I've paid 40.83 per year, so far. I paid another 150 for lifetime stamps too...would've cost 32 bucks just for those damn stamps!

Pat,
long ago I was going to take the route you went for a lifetime license. Then I got hurt real bad on my stint in the military and now am way over the percentage to get my license for about what I paid for it way back in the 70's. So if I live another 20 year without drowning my payments will be far les than a lifetime cost. Sometimes life throws you acurve but ya got to roll with it.

I have considered going that route as well, but then I always think to myself, am I really going to stay in Cali?  Furthermore, if I do, they keep on restricting fishing more and more... what if I buy it, and then they all but shut down fishing in CA?  You got it long enough ago, that it worked out... not sure about doing it now though...

What does the category "Ocean Enhancements" for $5.19 cover and also what is the range of "North Coast Salmon" for $6.22?   I am new to Ocean Fishing and am trying to understand the CA fishing license structure.

No 2nd rod for sturgeon:
Second Rod Validation
Required for all persons taking fish with two rods or lines in inland waters, except for waters in which only artificial lures or barbless hooks may be used.

Ocean Enhancement Validation:
Required for all persons taking fish in ocean waters south of Point Arguello (Santa Barbara County). An Ocean Enhancement Validation is not required when fishing under the authority of a One or Two-Day Sport Fishing License.

North Coast Salmon Report Card:
Required for all persons taking salmon in the Smith River System or Klamath-Trinity River System, including persons who are not required to have a sport fishing license, such as persons who are under 16 years of age, and persons who are fishing on free fishing days.

$6.70 for a basic license for disabled veteran is nothing to cough at.

If was up to me; disabled vets would get the license for free!  I don't expect any special treatment for vets like me but those with disabilities should not be charged a penny.  The fiscal impact of doing this would be nonexistent.

I agree with you on the disabled part. But not for all vets. It could get political so I won't explain. Other than I was drafted and rejected. I do thank all vets that served, but there has to be a line some where.

Thanks.

The second rod stamp allows you to fish with 2 rods unless otherwise prohibited.

I think Cal FAG has gotten way out of control with these fees.      I remember the days when it was 3 dollars and no special stamps.  Ocean Fishing was free to all...      What is next?   Rock fish stamps for each  species?

We ought to have a statewide boycott.    Without the income they extort from license fees, I bet they'd change this real fast.

Not that it would ever happen,  but  I would give up fishing for a year just to make a statement.

They are way over funded as it is.   I have a neighbor who, for years,  drives off to work in a full size SUV with  CA F&G  emblem on the side of it...    Our stamps pay for personal transportation and gas to every F&G employee ?

Ahh yes, the days before prop 13....

Your experience is different from mine.  Was your neighbor a warden?  If so, he was probably working from home.

The DFG I work for requires us to buy our own uniforms and some of our own field gear.  I had several of my studies cut short this year due to a travel restriction (ie, we couldn't even use state vehicles for official state business).

If you want DFG to spend less money, then ask the SJ valley water interest to stop suing the department.  The last time they sued DFG, they had to propose some asinine striper regulation changes that were inevitably shot down by the F&G commission... Cost to taxpayers... millions.

I used to think the Lic. fees were way out of line,
but after building a list of all the fish avail to persue in Cali, and comparing it to the fish avail to persue in other states, It's clear to see why Cali. licenses are more expensive than other states.
It's funny, a friend of mine is from back east and says they (Colorado) have more fish and lic. fees are only $20.00 or so. I asked him how the Albicore bite was or the Steelhead, and he laughed and said "I get the point".
California has one of the most diverse collection of species to fish for in the country, we have both warm and cold, fresh and salt water species as well as brackish water.
As proven by the AOTY entries, these fish are also fairly abundant and can be cought with a little expertise.
$45.00 + is not that bad if you really do the math.

I'm not happy about it but I'm gonna shut up and pay it  :smt012

I realize the price of everything is up....but I'd like to get more than what the DFG has given us. All this public/private partnership is crap, I'd like to see the dept. start pushing the judicial branch for prison time for both buyers and sellers in illegal poaching ring cases and I'd like to see more wardens instead of mindless garbage like "we should spend millions to change the name of our agency".

$45 + whatever other fees... its about $100 for bucks
if you guys do 1 skydive it will cost you about $200.00 + $50.00 for the video and another $20 .00 for the shirt... it will be over in about 5 minutes.
45 bucks is not bad and if you do OK you may get dinner to take home.

Eric you are right on, I met this guy at SFO when I was coming back from Cabo and ask me if I came to the Bay Area to fish ( I had my rods in the case) He was here from Arizona to fish for Albacore and Rockfish, He said He wanted to get some salmon too. His license for non-resident was over 100 bucks and that was about 5 years ago.

I think I pay about $40 - $50 for a non-resident Oregon license every year, sometimes twice if I don't plan well.  Their restrictions are much more difficult than ours.
