General Talk / Re: MERGED - Shark attack on yak 3/18- Monterey Bay
« on: April 06, 2017, 09:31:37 AM »

i had just been paddling very aggressively out in 70' for quite a distance (i had left the heard) and then put the brake on as i veered towards shore, the bottom was rising rapidly to 50'. The entire day was oily smooth, so there was no wind or swell, but the feeling i had right before my yak wobbled (a millisecond before the launching) alerted me that something is about to go down.

All the wrong moves in my opinion.

I remember you saying some shyte and breaking away, lol. It was overcast too as I remember, as someone who chases steelhead with a spey rod, it was the perfect weather for skating flies to steelies...apparently good for skating yaks to the landlord as well.

Yeah, I launch from Dock Beach and take advantage of the shelter from the dock.  The coves on the opposite side of the dock can produce lingcod and rockfish, but it can be tough fishing.  The area was totally fished-out - practically a desert - and is just starting to recover, but it should be great in a couple of years.

But I prefer to fish out of Sunset Beach.  Fewer pesky whales...

cool thanks for info. I stayed at a spot south of GB with a killer little beach launch... someday

Just a follow-up on all the great advice I've received.

I've dialed things in.  I've switched to an intermediate running line with 18' of T-14 (T-18 when needed).  From the sink tip, I'm using a 12" length of 30# Maxima attached with a nail knot, and about 9' of 15# level mono leader to the fly.

The hinges are mostly eliminated and I can pitch a Clouser 50-feet, without hauling, all day without wearing out my shoulder now that suf12foot has taught me to slow down and stop worrying about tight loops.  Thank you, Scott.

This rigging can be a butt-pain when I break off a leader, but the difference in casting is worth it.  I'll work with a loop-to-loop connection from the sink tip to the leader this year.

It wasn't a simple transition from fishing for trout with dry flies to fishing for bottom fish, but it's definitely worth the effort.

Thanks to Scurvy and ScottV and surf12foot, I'm addicted...  Thanks, guys.

Port Orford? Was on the dry dock last week, picked up some killer smoked albacore and salmon on the way back from a steelheading trip. Do you launch there? Looks like some killer water on the other side from the picture, there were some whales out there when we were chillin'

nice looking fish, but it's pretty hard on the fish to hold them out like that by the jaw.

point taken, no more fish pics...

Glad you got out Bill, sounds like it was a good day. Have fished from a boat the last 2 weekends and out in front of Lauritzen's to Big Break/sunken ship, and it has been good. If you can make it all the way to the tule island you will find fish somewhere on that flat. The first weedline that parallels that area was good too in front of little break. Last week we didn't get 30 to the boat like the previous weekend but quite a few scrappy 3-5lb fish before it shutdown around 11. Tons of boats out in Sherman last weekend but it was kinda slow for us, it had been very good out there.

Pic of a late night clouser I tied upside down (white over chart) on accident after a couple of beers and it was the hot fly, LOL. I guess on pause/drop it doesn't really matter.

tight lines!

I am browsing the satellite map of the area and am unsure of what bridge would be considered the "121" bridge (I am guessing it is the same as W. Imola ave...).

correct. right below that bridge along the back of the condos is a good deep spot. but yeah, get a sinking line or get a chunk of T material to make a shooting head to loop to your choice of running line. steelhead is my priority fall/winter, i usually go out there in the spring.

I usually launch kennedy but there is a launch by the yacht club too. I mostly fish between 121 and 12 bridges. Horseshoe bend slough is often full of schoolie sized stripers with an occasional double digit.

If it's too muddy it doesn't fly fish well. I like the outgoing tide and fish all the little places the sloughs drain back into. Watch the FF, you could go over a school of big stripers at anytime/anywhere in the river. Check out the FF in the picture.

Usually throw my medium to larger delta sized flies there, can't go wrong with chart over white. T14 in the main river, Type III  or sometimes int. sink in the sloughs gets it done...just how I do it, there are lots of other ways...

Heard there was going to be some dredging so it might mess the fishing up for a while. ---good luck!

Thanks.  I've about accepted that it sounded better in my head than it actually works.  Oh well, I'll figure out something I can do with the T-18.

You can chop it up into sinktips if you ever do skagit casting with the 2-hander.

15-18ft is kinda short and may enhance the hinging action. IMO don't go under 24' if you are trying to use it as a shooting head. I start with a 30' chunk and cut back until it feels right for the rod.

You could try using the braid part of the a braided loop and aquasealing over the connection. I still think it might hinge though.

I prefer integrated lines on the yak so I can pull some of the head in to cast a little easier at times, in the boat I don't care.

I don't remember where I got it, if the Cal Fly shop didn't have any I probably got it at The Fly Shop in Redding or the Ashland Fly Shop.

Airflo makes T18 and Rio makes T20. I only make level heads for the heaviest ocean stuff now, most of my T8 to T14 heads have been chopped into sink tips for my steelhead/spey stuff. I've gone to integrated for stripes which is most of my stillwater sinking line stuff.

I have a truckfridge 40L, not really big enough for storing alot of game or fish though. It has the good Danfoss compressor in it, it's a rebadged Indel B like the ironman 4x4 unit.

I run it on a bioenno power 400w/hr solar charger/power pack/inverter with (2) 50W solar panels. The Truckfridge pulls 30-64W (eco vs. max mode) according to the power pack when on and the duty cycle will vary depending on ambient temp. I can run on the car battery for 3 nights before it gets iffy on starting the truck.

I would think if you were storing game and fish that a good cooler and using dry ice would be a better bet. There are some good cheaper alternatives to Yeti these days.

I have about 10 jars of different gulps I got when they were on clearance sale for .97 from a original $20 at Sports Authority.
I don't care for them.  I like Big Hammers better.  I think the BH have better action.  The crawfish imitations for LMB works just as good for a fraction of the price of gulp.  Here's a picture of Ling I pulled out of the kelp with 3/4 weedless jig head.

I have about 8 jars of 5" an 7" jerk shads left from that deal. Mel, let me know if you have any jerk shads you want to get rid of, especially any white or new penny colors (cabs love this color). I rig them weedless on big EWG hooks to keep the little ones off and use them as teasers above a 6.5" big hammer to throw some scent. Sometimes carolina rig and plunk kelp holes and bounce the bottom, like bass fishing basically (thanks Bink!)

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Torqeedo 403 stowage

I don't find the 2 allen screws to be annoying, 30 seconds to mount it. I don't take it off at the ball joint thing, I slide the motor off the horizontal arm by loosening the 2 allen screws. I believe the nuts for those screws are nylock, screws just loosened not fully removed, never lost one.

The worse part is if you forget the allen key, been there/done that, so I always have a spare in the truck.

If it was me and I wanted to mount it on 2 yaks, I would just get 2 ball mounts and 2 horizontal bars. Make sure you give that horizontal bar the proper secondary support.

The weak point I'm noticing is where the steering cables attach. It's plastic and I can see it wearing, I believe someone makes an Aluminum one, I will probably just put some small stainless eyebolts first and see how that works.

Good luck
