Just got back from a 5 day Cruise in the Bahamas.
I brought my travel fly rod and a couple of flies, a super small kit: one reel with floating line, and a borrowed go-pro camera, in hopes of getting some time to fish.
Well, I got 3 hours of casting time while we were moored off a small Cay. I left the family at the tourist beach and hiked to the other side of the small island.
Soon, I found a rocky shoreline mostly devoid of cruise ship passengers.
Almost as soon as I started setting up my rod I saw a huge Bonefish, probably 7lbs+
cruising the flats, not 30 feet from where I stood in 2' of clear 70 degree water!
I was pumped to see that trophy and hurried to get set-up.
Finally, I took my first cast, and instantly my fly was followed by medium sized Bones - 2lb'ers or so. Wow, nice start I thought. I casted for the next hour watching countless fish, mostly Needlefish - from 20 - 30", and Bonefish - big and small, grab, swarm and
follow my fly. Also, too many other fish I could not identify were checking out my fly.
The water was clear and I felt as though I was standing in an aquarium - really cool!
Well, after a couple of LDR's on line ripping Bonefish I finally hooked up on a snaky Needlefish which darted about in front of me before I landed the toothy fish. These fish seemed to be the fastest fish on the reef.
A few casts later I thought I had finally hooked into a Bonefish, but as the brute bulldogged me and stayed deep I wondered if I was on a Jack. Moments after thinking this, my assumptions were confirmed as my line went limp and a nice jack swam toward me chasing the fly it had just come off. Total rush.
I worked the area for another few casts, and got a line ripping run of about 50yds from a huge needlefish, before it's teeth cut my 12lb flouro leader - WOW!
By that time I figured the girls were going to start wondering where I was, seeing as I missed the lunch spread that the ship had planned. So I hiked back and grabbed one of the last sandwiches, got on a lounge chair, and recounted 3 hrs of fantastic fly fishing while I watched the girls play in the blue Caribbean water.

Awesome job buddy. And yeah, 20 pound minimum used to make a twisted leader for those ocean critters.
