Title: 2 abalone divers dead and another missing- Caspar
Post by: SRJ on April 12, 2015, 08:10:01 PM
Two divers are deceased and another in the group missing. In the Press Democrat. They were visitors from the east coast and decided to "just go" abalone diving having never done it before. A person with common sense would not decide to just go sky diving without a ton of training, instruction and practice. Diving the Pacific is no less dangerous in my opinion.

Very sad but this is what happens when you treat the Nor Cal Pacific like it is a farm pond

There was nothing said that they had no experience in diving, just speculation. Also speculation that some of them had been drinking.

What a shame  :smt009

If you are new to diving please make sure you go out with an experienced dive buddy. Also make sure to do your homework and get some proper training before venturing out in the ocean. There are various training facilities available to assist you.

It's an extremely fun and addicting sport but can also be very dangerous if taken lightly.

RIP and condolences to their families and loved ones.

Tragic.  Seems there should be more telling details coming out on this.  I wonder how they were outfitted...

Tragic.  Seems there should be more telling details coming out on this.  I wonder how they were outfitted...

I talked to the firefighter who was there and called it in. He said he was fishing on the cliff at the headlands and watched them hop in. One instantly got thrown around by the water and didn't come up, at which point he tried to get to him while calling it in but was unable to.

Sounds like they hopped into a death trap, instantly got it and didn't have a chance even with someone to try and rescue them right there...

It's a shame, with all the information available, this sort of thing happens.
Be safe. Know what you are doing. If not, learn then go out.
RIP divers.

there seems to be a difference in attitude with locals or those familiar with our coast vs. those from out of the area...most times locals comment on conditions and seem to be more cautious ,where as those from out of the area have a "F"-it attitude..." I drove from so and so and I want to get my abs".... not saying that's the case here but just an observation...

Blurb from link below:

"It has come to be called the "Sacramento Syndrome." Says George Lawrence, a diver and member of a Mendocino rescue team, "People come from the Valley when abalone season opens April 1st, and they're going to get their abs no matter what." Common sense goes out the window between there and here."

Two more died and one critical of the coast of Washington. This weekend as well.
Very tragic weekend for the west coast.

Wow what a tragedy. Condolences to their friends and family. So far NCKA has done well staying out of trouble since the RCG and salmon openers.

FUCK!!!!

I just found out I knew one of the divers that died yesterday  :smt010

Really nice guy I met on a diving weekend with a big group. We rented a couple of houses and dove Van Damme.

It was an awesome weekend.

RIP Tae Won Oh, 49, of Dublin

Super sad unpleasant way to go.  I started diving when I was 16 with my brothers and some friends.   We were all over it back then, constantly in the water.   Now I'm 51 (the baby of 6 in our family) and my remaining brothers are in their 60's, out of shape and still want to abalone dive.   I have not found the heart to tell them I don't feel safe with them anymore, but this year is the year.  Be safe.

So around 3PM ish yesterday I'm cleaning my ab that I harvested from Fort Bragg on Saturday. I prepped it like I always did the way Tae taught me.

He owned a Sushi restaurant in Dublin called Amakara. That weekend in May 2012 he showed me how he would prep it for sashimi and other dishes that I still use to this day.

I've only seen him once after that fun filled weekend at the parking lot of Van Damme in 2013 where we greeted each other with a hug. He had finished with diving for the day and I was just starting.

Yesterday as I prepped my ab I remembered him commenting on my snoring that weekend. I just kind of chuckled to myself.

It's eerie to think that he was probably diving when I was thinking of him.  :smt010

I was just at Amakara on Saturday for dinner with my family, it's one of our favorite restaurants. Super sad for them.

Swell jumped on the north Mendocino coast from 5@10 or so to 10@14 rather quickly Sunday afternoon.  Tragedy could have been prevented by a quick buoy forecast check.

Friday/Saturday were excellent diving conditions on the Sonoma/south Mendocino coast.  Sunday was worse.  I wonder if they heard and got excited.

Sad deal indeed, the bright side though, he was able to go while doing what he loved, we all should be so lucky. Most of us will not get that choice, we will either die of a car crash, cancer, bullet in some foreign country fighting a war, or accident at work. The inevitable is coming for us all, ab diving, I will take that.  :smt006
