I got the pleasure of staying at Convict Lake for my honeymoon and me and the new wife got a tandem kayak from my parents for a wedding gift so the kayak made the trip as well.  I launched the kayak with the wife and the first fish I caught off the kayak got me 10th place in a fishing derby they happened to be running at that time.  Here is a picture of the fish all 7lbs 1oz of it.  I caught it on 4lbs test.  What a great fight!

Sure is a beauty.  What did you get him on?

More importantly, how did the wife do?  Gotta make sure to put her on some fish to keep her happy & interested - if she is anything like mine!  :smt003

Oh, and welcome to the board!

Congrats on the marriage and the fish. But if that fish was only good enough for 10th place, how big was the winning fish?

Yes the wife enjoys being out there on the water but probably not quite as much as me.  She caught quite a few fish on the trip as well.  We had most of our luck using a red and gold Tomas Boyant.  which is what I caught the big one with.  When I suggested Convict Lake for the honeymoon I figured it would get shot down but she was all for it especially since there are a number of natural hot springs near by.  It was a great trip and sorry guys she only has a brother.  Here is the standings for the derby http://www.convictlake.com/pdf/2007%20Fall%20Derby%20Results.pdf and here  is a picture of the Wife with the fish.  It was a absolutely beautiful Alper.

Sheesh, I must be missing something because the top 4 finishers are not in order according to pounds.  Here they are:

1st place:  7lb 12oz
2nd place: 8lb 4 oz
3rd place: 10lb 1oz
4th place: 11lb 12oz

And the rest are in numerical order.  What is it that I am not seeing or understanding?  I'm glad I didn't weigh in the 11lb fishy, I'd be pissed!

They took the top 5 fish and raffled for placement.  When I left to head home I was in 5th but got bumped to 10th over the following weeks.  They change up the structure every year.  If they measured length and not weight I would of placed even higher since my fish was not extremely fat but really long.  The owner said maybe next year they will work length in to the mix.

That definitely answers my question.  Still think I'd be bummed though if I weighed in the 11lb 12oz monster.

Yeah, no kidding!  a double digit sierra trout is a monster indeed.

Hey X, Congrats on getting hitched, placing top ten, and scoring a nice hobie tandem!  Your folks sure do give good presents!!

I was definitely happy with the gift.  I had taken them out on some rental Hobies at Jack London Square to try them out a few weeks prior to show them how much fun the Hobies were and told them that I was planning to buy one soon.  I was very happy with the gift I guess they were planning on getting me a washer and dryer prior to the trip.  I am glad they changed their mind and got the boat instead.  I love being on the water.
