Title: Cobra not shipping to US anymore?
Post by: Sin Coast on June 24, 2014, 12:25:18 PM
Anybody else hear about this? I saw it on paddleshack.com

"Note: As of May 1, 2014, Cobra Kayaks Suspends USA Dealer Shipments
For the past 5 years, Cobra kayaks have been manufactured in Auckland New Zealand under the direction of Aquatx Ltd.   Unfortunately, due to the devaluation of the USA dollar versus the New Zealand dollar and the increasing costs of transpacific freight, the traditional distribution business model is no longer financially sustainable.
In response to these market realities, Aquatx Ltd/Cobra kayaks has decided to suspend its' current relationship with Cobra USA dealers until further notice."

We have had a discussion on CCKF. I am of the opinion. That it really isn't a big loss to us over here. Keep our money home and there are better yaks on the market now any way. I have a friend who would love to get rid of his navigator. For him it is too tipsy and easy to get past the point of no return. he won't use a seat pad under his butt. He want to trade for my prowler 15.

No biggie, the whole point for the last X years of monetary policy (among other things) was to make manufacturing SOME products in the US more attractive than importing. Doesn't work for all items (small size/high price) such as electronics, but for something like kayaks, if they want to play, they can mold them here. They are like popcorn, take up a lot of space, full of air and "fluffy". One boat is less than a cubic foot of raw plastic, so better to just import the plastic and mold them here.

Not necessarily a bad thing, me thinks...
