I used to think they primarily swim "tube first" but from observations they seem to do alot of swimming "feet first". What is their primary means of propulsion for "distance" swimming and when they are fleeing predators?

mostly backwards. forward is more for gathering food and exploring.  there's a video i saw somewhere that was really cool following a school of squid..it must have been on netflix or blue planet or something.

So by backwards do you mean feet (tentacles) first? I'm especially interested in how they swim when fleeing predators.

i think backwards is "tube" first......Below is a vid. I am guessing they run tube first when being chased.

Arrow squid swim cone-forward (tentacles behind). Unless they're trying to eat something. Or if they're humping.
