Title: anybody tried the Hobie Island spinnaker?
Post by: NowhereMan on February 18, 2017, 04:38:42 PM
Like the subject line says, I was wondering if any of the AI/TI owners here have used the new (as of 1 year ago) Hobie Island spinnaker sail kit. From the videos online, it looks like it would give a nice speed boost under the right conditions. One downside is that there are more lines to deal with, which would be a hassle, especially with fishing gear.

Thanks.

Btw, this link has some good info on a few simple mods that look to make things run more smoothly:

Hadn't seen that---pretty cool, but I think the spinnaker will be a lot more useful.

I'd seen that one. I think the Hobie setup is a better design, but this is pretty good for a diy.

Got the Hobie spinnaker kit and set it up (plus a few other minor mods I'd been wanting to do). Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but here are a couple of pictures. Lots of ropes involved, so it might not be compatible with fishing, but I know I'll have to give it a try. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to actually test it out soon...

Took it out on Lexington last weekend but it was too gusty to really give it much of a test drive. I'll report back when I finally get a chance to give it a fair test...

How is it launching out of Lexington these days?  Do they do a "thorough" inspection, and charge a lot like Calero?

Lexington is only open on weekends until the middle of the month. I think it's $4 for inspection and $5 to launch. The "inspection" was completely pro forma---he barely even looked at at and didn't touch anything. But, last year there was one guy who was extremely thorough, so it's hard to know what you might get, inspection-wise.

How was the install
Did you use different  colored ropes or different sizes to help determine
,the ones you need at the time

If you follow Hobie's directions, install is easy, like maybe 2 hours max. But I did a few things non-standard, based more-or-less on some of the ideas here:
http://www.seqic.com.au/how-to-sail-a-hobie-island/hobie-island-spinnaker-kit-installation-guide/
Mostly, I just added a few extra pad eyes and blocks to better route the lines. As far as the ropes go, everything is included and I can't see any possible reason to do anything different with those.

Setting up the sail (as opposed to the initial installation) is not very intuitive. So I practiced that a few times before taking it out, and even then I fumbled around with it for a while before launching. I think I've got it down pat now and it'll only be a few extra minutes prior to launch.
