Hi All,
Happy end of 2017 everyone. Overall, us committee members think the year went very well from a competitor and submission basis. We plan to keep the rules the same, with the exception that we're decreasing the mouth open deduction to 1" from its current 1.5". When we introduced the mouth open deduction, our goal was to stop rejecting fish outright with mouths slightly open, as those competitors were not trying to "game" the system, just had little errors now and then, and were getting nitpicked to death on rejected fish.
Anyways, now the nitpicking has gone to the mouth open deduction :). Just kidding. Most of the committee members aren't DOTY award winners like I am, so they want to get you as many points as possible. We still want to encourage you guys to measure your fish as accurately as possible, and try not to "game" the mouth open deduction. That's why we're willing to drop the deduction to 1" this year, and my sincere hope is to someday get it down even lower or get rid of it altogether to make it an even friendlier competition. So keep up your good work, and please make an effort to shut those jaws!
If you have any other recommendations, other than the most common one of "get rid of bmb", hurry the F up. You've got like two days, and Rob and I will be gone chasing stupid trout so we really won't care anyways.
Sincerely,
bmb
DOTY 2017 winner
and the rest of the committee.

Getting rid of "Bitch Man Ben" is the only thing that needs to happen for 2018! Everything else is fine!

When can we sign up for 2018? Just pay 2017 over to the left? 2017 was a lot of fun fishing!

I changed it to say 2018 over to the left, you should be able to pay whenever you want...

Any news for the 2017 AOTY/DOTY ceremony?
We are trying to make it the most inconvenient place for you. j/k
We have a couple ideas but not set in stone yet.

Convict Lake seems like a great spot.

John, it looks like you paid the $40 entrance fee twice? Was that a mistake or ?
If a mistake lemme know and we can try and send a refund...I say try cuz I don't think we've ever done that before, but I bet we can figure it out.

Was probably paying for Sam. PK will make sure to activate both. You're off the hook now, it's 2018. Someone restrict his access!

I learned my lesson about getting point deducted from. My AOTY entries.
Zip tying the fishes mouth closed, clubbing them to make easy for measuring (everyone hates fish thrashing about on a hawg trough), take photo, and release.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I am modifying Rule 8, The Posing Rule, to state the following:
"8. Posing Rule -All fish .......
No lip grippers, game clips, zipties or stringers can be in the mouth when photograph is taken. Continued violations of the posing rule may result in the disqualification of the competitor. "

aoty isn't a fishing contest, it is a photography contest. With nitty old grandmas as judges just waiting to cruelly ban your submission because you are a sad sac, and you disappoint them.

The goal for us is to make it more of a fishing contest than a photography and posing contest. That's why my preference is for all fish to be measured and photographed the same, rather than allow for point manipulation. See the KBF Rules, they're significantly stricter than ours.
On the other hand, we don't have specific rules on what measuring devices can be used, and let people manipulate tails to lengthen fish. We set only a small modicum of rules, and hope our competitors try to measure fish somewhat conservatively instead of trying to game the system to earn a few additional points here and there when compared to another competitor's fish. Doing that will allow the competition to become more friendly, and I hope, more open, than it has been in year's past. That's the best way to encourage more participation, which is always my goal, since ultimately the funds go to PIF, which is the strongest cause we have in our community.
Moving too much of the fishing discussion away from the forums and onto social media doesn't help with increasing participation, and it would be great if some of the AOTY competitors came back to the forums to share information with others and to promote the cause externally as well.
I play the heel in a lot of these discussions because I'm the one who gets butthurt the least, so hopefully y'all get on it for 2018. My goal is still to push the competition forward as a friendly competition, and that competitors can face off with each other in a way that they don't worry so much about the measuring part of it. We've implemented a couple of behind the scenes changes with our measuring and approval policies as well that are more generous than in years past, and hope to continue to do so. At the same time, we're continually evaluating the competition to make sure its as fair to Matanaska as it is to yakyak 1 fish.

And I only said all that because its funny and I know you dont take it personally. I only post one or two fish a year anyway on aoty but i'm happy to keep donating. One of these years I'll make a run at it but its not gonna be 2018.
Regarding posting more on the forums, as you note much of the posting has moved to social media. I'm as guilty as anyone on this, but posting on social media is far more convenient and its easier too. Ever since photobucket gave us the big middle finger, I've simply not been bothered to post many photographs on online forums. Facebook and instagram are just so much easier anyway.
NWKA AOTY is an active and useful facebook page showing off recent aoty submissions. Instead of fighting social media, how about using it to promote aoty like the sister site does. As an aside, also note that nwka doesn't give a shit if the mouth is open and never has.
So can you make submissions to ncka aoty automatically post to an insta or facebook feed that we can sub to if we want? I know it might drive some traffic away from ncka and on to social media, but i don't know how much traffic/revenue/etc issues that might cause.

I think the committee members would love to do things like that. Gotta get permission first from the site owners and figure out how it works since that's not in our control. But getting competitors to help push our competition on social media would help! Let's make this a big year!

One thing competitors don't see is our discussions with sponsors. The committee members try our best to get prizes for the competition, but the quieter the competition gets, the less attention it gets, the less interest the sponsors have. If competitors want to continue to have cool prizes, we need to give visibility to the competition.
Otherwise, we can make it a bragging rights only type competition, which is personally fine with me and a couple of the judges. Unfortunately the committee members are all volunteers and have competing priorities in life, so the more help we get from others on this stuff the better.

x100.
For example on the sponsors/prizes...
If I was Jackson and/or Orion I would be pretty disappointed that the donation of a brand new kayak and a brand new 85 quart cooler only generated 5 responses.

I think that is more an indictment of the limitations of forums to reach folks than it is of the users of the forums not showing sufficient appreciation for the sponsorships.
Give the people a like and share button. They will use it. Social media is just easier. Forum software is old and clunky.

I was not going to donate this year for just that reason. I ended up with just barely enough funds left in my budget to go ahead and donate again. It does not matter to me what happens to the kayak after it is won. The winner can use it, sell it, or burn it, I don't care. I just want Wildy to know that the donation was worth it in terms of advertising the brand. Last year and this year I really did not see much from anyone about any of the prizes. I would rather donate a kayak to PIF or HOW. That is much more worth it in my opinion for advertising. Sorry to rant, but this was brought up as a sponsor thing in previous post and I am a sponsor so I figured I would tell you all how I feel.

It’s surprising and unfortunate more excitement was not expressed. I think that Wilderness Systems makes some of the best kayaks out there. The thresher and tarpon are probably my favorite paddle kayaks. Thank you RacinRob for the donation. Whoever wins will have a sweet new ride!

I really like the idea of a WS Thresher with the modular helix motor and I will hype the hell out of it all over the internet and on the water. Tell the sponsors about me :smt044
I personally prefer forums over social media. Big thank you to all the sponsors, moderators, and forum members who coordinate and contribute to DOTY and AOTY.
-
If this could be incorporated into social media the following would be much better. I'm personally fairly new to the forum (maybe a year now) and I really haven't seen much of anything related to AOTY. Just now seeing the tab and was looking into it to see what the prizing etc. was.
Cool to hear that you guys have sponsors as reluctant as they may be for a competition that goes under the radar. Seems like you could always fund a prize pool out of the entrance fee even if it was more minor then a high end kayak, something like a nice paddle could work if you ever lost sponsorship.
Anyways I look forward to following AOTY this year now that I have found out about it, might even enter but as a recent college graduate with loans due soon $40 seems like a lot atm hahaha fml.
