Title: AOTD 2008
Post by: InSeine on July 19, 2008, 10:24:15 PM
As usually the weather forecast was not as bad as what was reported.  We launched at first light to calm winds and a small swell.  We knew we had our work cut out for us when we pulled into the Fort Ross parking lot to find that Patrick and Allen where already launching.  Those guys are hard core.  Naoaki (uminchu) allen(alshobieoutback) and I launched and headed south from the Fort to join up with the legends to find they already had points on the board.  Once the group all arrived at ling alley, Nao and I ditched for our secret fishing grounds....082 on the GPS, where legends are made.  :smt044 Nao hooks up a nice brown and I follow up with a big red.  We fished North till about 9AM with a handful of decent rockies and I had a barely legal ling.  We then moved in shallow and met up with Justin and Adam in the kelp to hunt down the elusive cabazone.  Fished till 12:30 and got off the water just in time.  Saw white caps as we left the loading zone.  The BBQ was classic NCKA food fest, with fresh fish tacos, tri-tip steak etc.  Thanks to Allen and Patrick for taco fixings, Adam for tri-tip and Mike for more steak.  I hope I didn't forget anyone.  And now for what you are all waiting for.  The winner of the 2008 AOTY is (drum roll)  Allen (otobepelagic) with a 33in ling and 19in rockfish for a total of 198 pts.

Had a Great time thanks Jim for Hosting. I figured it would take 3 species so I started up at lake Sonoma hoping to get a LMB and a smallie real quick then join the boys at Ross 1 rockfish and I would be doing pretty good. Got a 18" LMB on my first cast right next to the ramp then paddled 15 min to get to my smallie spot I got a good hook up right away but it came off just as fast, then I couldn't buy a smallie the LMB were bitting pretty good and I couldn't get past them tried everything in my box for more LMB :smt013.
It was getting late so I trolled the shore with Mooch's fav and lost a steelie after one jump, snagged a Bluegill and picked up a couple dink smallies but one was 12" I thought cool 252pts and it's only 8am and I'm headed to the salt. Well getting to the coast took forever I got behind every slow driver out there and I figured I wouldn't get in the water till about noon so I opted to try for butts knowing I could pick up a small rockie as a back up, fished Bodega rock and conditions were perfect just the drift I wanted but just got 1 underbutt and a suprise Salmon that put up a great fight in the shallow water. The wind was starting to pick up and I had no idea of the time so I hit the jetty for a small rockie got a monkey face eel but the only rockie I caught was 4 or 5" was going to take a pic just in case but I left my camera in my splash pants back in the car. Got to Jim's at about 2 and the boys were nowhere to be seen so I figured the weather was pretty good at Ross and I shoulda stuck to my orignail plan :smt013. The boys showed just before 3 and it was good to see everybody and have a killer meal the tacos were killer and Adam's TT was tasty. Thanks again Jim it was a fun day the drive home up the Sonoma Coast and the River was awesome. Adam what did you say to those cows?? Last shot for AbK :smt002

Sounds like good stuff right there.  Allen, congrats on winning, are you going to Elk?  Wish I could have come but I'm taking it easy this weekend letting my knee heal before the Elk derby.  I really like the format of this derby alot.  Good of Jim to put this together.  JTF

Thank You Jim for putting on a great event.

The alarm was set for 3:00 am but I got up a little after two and turned it off......many, many years and hundreds of different adventures later it's still the same.......anticipation is it's own timekeeper! We made the coffee, packed a lunch and checked the buoy reports......hmmm .......still looks crappy out there.Thinking we might need some sort of live bait we checked our improvised crawdad trap in the water agency canal next to the driveway for nada, guess the little buggers don't like 3" perforated pipe with inverted plastic bottles for entrances or maybe it was the polish sausages inside.
As we turned onto River Road my cell rings and it's Adam hot on our tail. After passing through Jenner I pulled over at one of the bluffs to get a look (more like a listen) at the ocean conditions expecting to hear thundering surf and to taste the salt spray from the wind, boy were we surprised. Arrived at the park, unloaded the gear and waited for "first light". Adam showed and after he unloaded the concensus was time to launch. We  pushed off and proceeded out the cove as Jim, Naoaki, and Justin were driving down the hill right behind us. A bit later Al arrived on his Hobie Outback.
We started fishing in about thirty-five fow and landed the "red' in about ten minutes and the "ling" not long after...... on the teaser with a strip of squid. Soon after I landed another starfish.......damn, yet another dollar to Patrick! The water visibility and color was amazing, clear....almost a light blue (Oh Boy yet another anticipation entering my brain). I stayed in shallow for another two more legal lings (released) and then made the move to the cove hoping to score a certain elusive devil fish. While there I landed my fourth legal ling (released) that had the coolest gold and black colors. I'm not sure but I think some sort of permit is required to harvest the amount of I kelp snagged up from the depths.
All too soon it was time to call it and hit the beach. Earlier in the morning I had taken the preparation of stowing my helmet in the forward hatch.....thank goodness for the calm conditions, that's where it remained. After landing Jim and I had a small discussion regarding the probable winner ..........Mike (Mickfish) must have done it if none of us had completed the salt water tri-fecta.  After loading our vehicles it was off to Jim's for a veritable feast. Fresh fish tacos, cold ones, and a few good fish stories put the final touches on another GREAT day on the water...........you gotta love this site.

...after tossing&turning from 8:30 frinite -2:30am I arose from bed, got stuff unloaded/loaded, was on the road by 3 and pulled into the Fort@5:15!
I must say..that is one FUN drive. Deer, owl, raccoon nor jackrabbit would have kept me away! Wondering in bed, inbetween counting sheep(blues), I thought the ocean was gonna be rough, so I called the best intel I could at that time.
We had a plan if the blue was a no-go!
Got near the coast and the fog was so thick I couldn't see 30ft...that means NO WIND!!  got to the park and Allen&Patrick just finished unloading. I raced to try to launch(follow) them, but they disapeared into the fog fast.

Pic1~ Hey! wait for me fellas!  see them paddling off into fogged-darkness!

I get out there and could see NO ONE!, only the cliffs, so i stay close until it cleared a little....hearing Allen anounce a BigVerm already, had me going deep to find the same, then planned to hit the shallower areas later when the winds pick up. No RedLove, just Blues and more blues on the teaser. Babysat a small blue on a jighead for 1hit that ripped it off, then tried it again with another for a snag&set-up lose. I lost more set ups today then ever(3)!
...when I did catch up to the 1-2 TagTeamers, Allen calmy says," i think I got a big one!", as he brings it to color, as I watch him flinch, like a doctor hammering your knee....and reaches behind him for the gaff.

pic2&3~ActionAllens' gaff&hoist job!

....more pics and story to follow

....so I ask him to lift the second place participants up for an OTWS!(not knowing at that time, they were to be the "winning" participants! :smt011
Allen..you are a Yak-FishHookingMachine!!

pic1~ the winners!! all three of them (pic was taken at 6:52) we could have quit then and went for breakfast instead.

....I gave up on the babysitting ploy and stuck a BigOl'LingThing(Kalins10"Grub) on the end and searched for steep-doppin-structures...no love for awhile, then I followed Naoaki, as he went looking north for Patrick. As I emerge from a kelp-mat, I look at the F.F. to see it go from 30ft. to 60'.....I kick it into REVERSE, back to the 30ft mark, drop it down, hit bottom, feed it more line, feel it fall and then WHAMMO!  the kind of tug that pulls my pole 3/4 into the water. I give it a hard hook-setting pull and it just kept going deeper, I quickly loosened the drag a bit, so it wouldn't break off(AGAIN!) After a little game of TugOfWar(which I won!  :smt002 ) ...after farming a few NICE ONES this season, I repeated in my head...keep its head under the water, loosen the drag, once you get it the net, lift it high&keep it high this time!...after completing these *VERY important tasks, in ORDER, I had me a 28"er in the yak!, along with a full-sized-regergitated Octapus, which i teast-tasted, pinned onto the jig and set it down for the remainder of the tour. It did not get hit.

pic2~ the taste test, kinda acidic for my liking.

No Verms, gophers, chinas nor cabbies were harmed during this adventure.Just a few released&feeling fine Blues...like 20 of them.

pic3~a pic ,of a previous pic.

...more pics and recant to follow

.....it was so small i didn't even stow, fasten or put anything away as I knew it would be CAKE to get back on shore....well....i almost bit it, thanks to Naoaki for grabbin my handle or I might have lost it....my yak&gear was full of sand&salt.

The wind started blowing about the time we had to get out....perfect timing!

pic1~ the DorkMobile heading south on hwy1...with cult-like followers.

pic2&3~ the fryer and the grill

THANKS TO Jim for having this event!   and congrads to Allen for kicking our colective buts and for being myUPtoTHEminuteINTELreporter!  :smt002

yeah John, thanks! those things are just what the shop guy called them..
Zero or HERO!
I've had four on them (BigGrub) so far this year...that ONE actually made it to the net and stayed there.
..one headed for the bottom when I was F'n around and broke the whole thing off down at PigeonPt!
..had another BIGGER one on it, but unbuttoned at yaks side earlier this season at Ft.Ross.
..and a just-legal Ling up at SaltPt.
IT FELT GOOD to get it to STICK finally!

The stars must have been in perfect alignment during the day because catching a couple of fish was only the half of it. While touring  the kelp beds looking for openings I stopped on a likely spot, reached for my fishing pole and it was gone....lanyard and all. Tracing my steps I came upon my pole lying on top of a kelp as if some one had laid it there and forgot it. A new lanyard clip is in the works. Usually my fish release rod's weight is always hanging up on the kelp as it's always ready for immediate deployment. Never even used it Saturday as I don't think I fished in water deeper than forty feet.

Thanks for the re-cap and pics, fellas....and congrats to otobepelagic!

I gotta agree with Fishshism - Work is extremely overated. I've had four days off this whole month (three of those the Independence Day break) and my next day off is more than likely going to be August 1st, and only 'cause I took that day off over two months ago!

Oh well, all the overtime $ will have to go to pimpin' out the new ride.

Truth, but Patrick is poised to pounce...  I have a feeling that Allen's ready for that and has an awesomely proud anticipation of it.

I agree Eric, Patrick has figured out that I have been filing down the points on all his hooks, gaff, nicking his leaders and cut holes in his net while he sleeps at night.  In addition we are doing our best to keep him sleep deprived as well as drugging his coffee in the morning prior to fishing. :smt001

anyways, huge Thanks to Jim for putting things together again!!! :groupwave
I already said congrats to Allen there, so I'll skip it here. :smt002

I was worried about the weather forecast, the same as everybody else. But when I got to Bodega the night before, it was completely calm...  Al & his Hobie Outback were already there hanging out w/ Jim (it was very nice to meeting you!).  I video taped the front of the beach to give everybody an update, but I grabbed a beer & forgot about it...

the day was very good as others said!
sorry we missed you Slammer, but I made sure Allen got your money too...
Adam & Mickfish tried to kill us again w/ great meat, (thanks again for the great cows) :fat  I drank until I passed out so I couldn't get up for  the next day Hali at Tomales... :beer3 :smt015  but it was all good!

Here is the picture of Adam stretching in the thick fog before fishing (good idea!)
& Jim's nice red!

Man... Sorry I haven't posted, I got really sick, and have been in bed almost a week...

Had a rough start to the day, taking one step to far on the launch, and soaking myself up to my chest (possibly why I ended up ill), but with some help got out there and started fishing.  Caught several blacks, couple china's and a couple small greenlings, probably over a dozen total.  After about 2 1/2 hours, I was feeling some sea sickness...

Allen was kind enough to give me a sandwich which helped for a little while (forgot all my food in the car) and he even offered me some jigs to fish with to try and catch a ling (what a guy!).  When I started shivering from the cold, it was time to head in, around 11:30.  I did a successful beach landing without a garage sale, and hauled my stuff up the beach and back into the car.  Slept for a few hours till I saw some of the guys pulling out of the water and headed back to the barn.

Thanks so much Jim for putting me up for the night, putting on the whole event, cooking up some mean fish taco's, and to everyone else I met for the fun stories and  beer afterwards.  Will be one of my fondest memories of 2008!  Congrads to Allen on being the winner too!  Your one hell of a guy!  :smt006

Now, to finish my day of work, and pack up my stuff to leave for Reggae on the River :)
