So winter has set in once again and I have been working on next years rockfish season. I made up some shrimp (rockfish) flies that had features I was looking for but couldn't find commercially. Specifically, I wanted pink, orange and white flies, and I wanted some glow which has worked for me. I found some orange, pink and white Flashabou that glows in the dark that I really liked. Also used some Crystal Flash. Most bodies are just triple glued thread. I was going simple because in the past, simple patterns seemed to work best and are the toughest for rocky teeth. The smaller ones are for catching bait (small rockies). Not that I have a use for greenlings.  :smt002 I am also working on some orange and pink chenille bodies and a brown chenille back which reminds me of a hairy crabs back. So, whose going rockfishing in the next month? I have a dozen or so experimentals I can't test in Zion. So, if you want to post up if they worked (pics) I'll send you a couple to test for me. PM an address and I'll send a couple to you till they run out. Happy fishing brothers.

So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

I would like to try some of those Ed! The larger ones are real similar to the ones that someone made in the 70's. The small ones will be good for the greenies I bet. Pm sent

Howdy Sledge,

I don't hit Strawberry much. I pass too many better fisheries on my way to Strawberry to go that far. Headed to San Diego for 2 weeks over the holiday. I'll be jigging irons for yellows at La Jolla with my son, Logan. Life is good. I'll be up north for next years rockfish opener for sure. Take care man.

USF Phase II

Bought some quality Daiichi Saltwater Hooks instead of the cheap rockfish hooks. Few more colors and tighter wraps. Craig and Dan, I'm sending you a better sample batch wednesday. I will experiment till I come up with the USF El Primo. These suckers glow like the sun................

Check out the pattern "mini-puff", they are deadly on surf perch. I've used them on rockfish (scaled up) to deecent success as well

All you want brother. You, Tommy and Tote can have the refined final Phase USF. I'll come up with your own Bigfoot pattern that has big Mylar feet.  Got some other rigs I have been working on also. LJ is in 2 1/2 weeks. Can't wait. I greet christmas morning every year at the launch in La Jolla. Logan and I are also doing a Mexican rockfish charter. Big boccacio down there. Lets all do Big Sur on the opener next year. I love to watch you flip that giant yak of yours. Talk to you soon.

Thanks man. I realize it's a novice attempt. I'm just making up patterns as I go along. If anybody has any proven patterns they can share (Thanks Steve), I can try and copy them instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. I suppose as long as the hook can hold a little squid anything will work. I will be using these at Flamng Gorge next month for burbot through the ice. They like things that glow too. I'll let you know how they work.  :smt006

Let me knosw if you need a pic of the mini puff.

They are basically half a wooly bigger (for the head), then grizzly hackles tied bak over a pinkor orange body, with a flashabou tail
They're supposed to imitate a sand crab, or little shrimp.

So when will they be for sale, :smt003, I can't find any for rockfish that I like.
Remember to practice safe knots, because big fish don't just break your line, they also break your heart.
