A while back I read something about a pully system to left the kayak to the ceiling of the garage and safely secure it.  Can't seem to find that post anymore. Anyone know how to do this?

Thanks,
Phong

I bought a bike lift from Harbor Freight for 5 bucks.  Works great.  Just put straps around the yak that get hooked by the lift.

National makes a 2" single pulley "block and tackle".

that and 50 ft of rope lifts one of our Kayaks 12 feet in the shop.

I used the excess rope to make the slings.
Have not taken a picture of them yet, maybe tomorrow

I'm going to pick those up at harbor freight tomorrow. Hope it'll hold the weight tho.  My kayaks almost 80lbs.

Just in case, Fishbucket, how did you rig those up?

Thanks,

krusty

According to the manual http://manuals.harborfreight.com/manuals/95000-95999/95803.pdf, the bicycle lift is rated for 44 lbs, half the weight of your kayak.

The 45lbs limitation may be an issue.  I use the bicycle hanger for my wife's yak, which is barely 30 lbs.  For my OK Scrambler, I bought a game hanger, also available at Harbor Freight for about $10.  It supports up to 400+lbs.

Sorry for the messy pic, but you get the idea.

I use the bike one for my sit inside. It just works with that weight. Would not trust my tarpons on it.

I used 2 B&Ts per kayak.  I have open rafters in the shop and draped a piece of 3/8s chain around them to the top pulley hook.   The rope ties at the bottom bracket of the Top Pulley, down thru the lower pulley and then back up and thru the top pulley...to create the rope you pull on to lift and lower.  If you use two B&Ts. you'll have two lift and lowering ropes ( one on front, one on back.
You'll then need a cleat to tie the ropes to when the kayak is lifted in the air.
I store all my stuff in the kayak so it's alot more weight.  I'd guess close 80# ... going to have to weigh that too.

I'll get home in about 2 hours and try and post up some pics.... tonight.

My solution is very simple.  I have  2 - 2" web straps that are attached to the rafters on one end and attached to ratcheting roll-up devices on the other.   I used to ratchet the yak directly from the roof racks on my vehicle up to their resting position about 7 feet up.  Now I use Hullivators and they're too tall to fit in the garage so I remove the yak from the Hullivators and place it in the sling created by lowering both straps and ratchet it back up.  The ratcheting devices are hanging from straps attached to the rafters so that I can reach them to lower and raise the yak.  Having the ratcheting devices eliminates the need to tie off a lifting rope or strap.

Thanks everyone for your input. Just got home with a bunch of stuff. Now I need to find space to make my rig.
