I like your approach to working smarter not harder.  that's gonna save the back for more seat time in the kayak!

Safety First / Re: How can I add a visibility stripe to a kayak?

3M Reflective tape comes to mind, but it would be too expensive: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/3m--reflective-tape--P008_243_004_509?recordNum=1

Only other idea I have is to go with Rust-Oleum plastic primer which should adher per they website for Poly/Plastic: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/rust-oleum--plastic-spray-primer--10124873?recordNum=8  And then spray what color you want over that.  I used it to paint some crab buoys, and it worked well for that, but not sure how will it will stand up.

Just to add to this, Rust-Oleum Plastic Primer is Ooookay, but it's not its fault.  Plastic, PVC specifically is really hard to stick paint to.  it needs to be really clean, and the paint needs some help for the adhesion.  Using acetone really really helps the adhesion, but it isn't very friendly to plastics, so you have to make sure you're taping off around where you're going to paint, use it quickly, thoroughly and start painting relatively quickly as well.

I've used Rust-Oleum plastic primer and paint very successfully after learning about how clean the surface needs to be, and using acetone to make it stick better, beforehand it will flake and chip off very easily.

hope this helps.

Safety First / Re: Missing anything???
« on: April 07, 2022, 10:57:25 PM »
New to saltwater kayak fishing and will be doing most of my fishing off the Sonoma Coast. I'll always be fishing with at least one other person, but am acquiring what I consider essential offshore kayak gear that each person should have with them. Let me know if I'm missing something or should add to my list of safety gear:

Kayak specific PFD (NRS Chinook)
Standard Horizon HX210 VHF radio
Storm whistle
Old school handheld compass
Kayak bilge pump
Obviously my Iphone (kept in a dry pouch)
Fish finder with GPS

I typically wear a Garmin Phoenix 6 watch, which also has GPS.
Definitely will be wearing wetsuit when out on the ocean.

Please chime in if there are any other recommendations for safety gear you guys like to take with you. Thanks!

These are great safety equipment, you're thinking ahead and that's great.

The only thing I haven't seen here that I think of as essential, Letting people know where you're going, who you're going with, when you're going out and in.

Jay Yokomizo New Huck Finn.  e is the best on the Bay by far.  510-652-3403  Live bait specialist stripers and halibut

Bushy

+1 for the New Huck Finn, I've been on the boat ~5 or 6 times now, the second through 6th they knew my name, I have no idea why but it seems they just care, they're there for hive fives, not salty comments and unwanted sarcasm, they're just class acts.

always live bait, always a great time.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Flaring out PVC rod holders
« on: April 05, 2022, 12:47:22 AM »
it's nice to flare them out so you don't have to futz with it as much.

the heat gun works really well you just have to keep going till it looks like it's getting lose. it will be pretty obvious, it does take a couple minutes.

I"ve got a bluetooth 7 pin that i use on the highlander.  You simply need to run a power cable from battery to the where your 4 pin is, then plug to a 7 pin female adapter, which is super easy with an adapter.
The bluetooth dongle then plugs into that.
An app controls the braking force, etc (just like if you hardwired it).
Works like a frickin charm to tow my boat.

bluetooth controller - https://www.etrailer.com/Trailer-Brake-Controller/Curt/C51180.html
7 pin adapter- https://www.etrailer.com/Wiring/Curt/C57672.html

how long have you had the bluetooth adapter on your highlander?  that sounds like a cool option for vehicles without a factory hitch/trailer brake set up.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Fish finder what side?
« on: November 09, 2021, 02:09:14 PM »
lefty, get in and out on the left side, land and net fish on the right side, fish finder up front right.  never gets in the way, good place to watch the rod tip and the fish finder while trolling.

CA Regulations / Re: Crab trap regulation change
« on: October 29, 2021, 11:46:28 AM »
I still don’t understand the trap validation requirement. Is it simply a fee like an enhancement that is paid in addition to our general license? Validation makes it sound like we need to have the trap checked by an authority but I don’t see any language like that.

It seems like a "you read and understand the new rules" checkmark requirement when I went through the purchase flow. Kinda silly since you learn about the need for that purchase by reading the rules. *shrug*

And it's only good until December 31st!

General Talk / Re: Folding kayak trailer
« on: October 06, 2021, 10:17:01 AM »
Here’s my in progress harbor freight 1720lb kayak trailer. It’s a modular system, so undo the Ubolts and the whole structure comes off leaving you with a flat bed.

I like your modular idea.  I think it’s better than the way I did mine which makes the trailer pretty much a kayak trailer. It would be nice to be able to use it to haul other things. Mine is screwed and glued together and to the frame.
Here are some old pics. I’ve made a couple of mods since then.

I really like the rod holder in there.

Crabbing can be some work. Mind the tides, your lines and gear. Be safe. Don't let crabs pinch you.

and when they do try to not throw them out of the kayak :D

If I had a hybrid, I would be roof topping on a hybrid, Just happens I had a truck first.  A hybrid for around home/day trip kayaking I can't see any better vehicle than a hybrid.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: What brand of braid?
« on: September 13, 2021, 11:48:29 AM »
I've been using Suffix and Power Pro Slick 8?

I can't tell the difference at all personally, I don't cast into the wind much, I haven't shore fished much since the pandemic, but I do know the tuna guys prefer Daiwa J braid over power pro. And it's always recommended at Fishery Supply In San Jose.
