Hey guys looking for anyone who wants to join me fishing HMB for bottomfish tomorrow (Saturday, June 4). This will be my first time out in the ocean this year. Conditions seem pretty solid, with manageable swells and wind, but all the same it'd be nice to have a buddy. I'm sure there will be others out there too!

Hobie only sells as a set and it's quite expensive. The alternative for myself would be buying an aftermarket one. Let me know if you are willing to sell one!

Recipes / Salmon bones for soup?
« on: September 21, 2020, 06:41:05 PM »
Has anyone used salmon bones for soup (not stock). Someone told told me it makes great coconut curry soup but I've also heard that salmon bones can be fishier.

Currently I have a Scotty 1050 Depthmaster manual downrigger on my kayak and works great, but my DIY brain is itching again. Does anyone here know how much larger and heavier the Scotty 1099 DepthPower electric dr is compared to the 1050? It's surprisingly difficult to find the info on the internet.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / 2015 and New Hobie AI Owners, AMA Length?
« on: July 23, 2020, 01:16:46 PM »
I've been searching the web without success. Apparently Hobie increased the length of the AI ama on the 2015 and newer (V2) models. Could someone tell me what the length of the new ama is? Thank you!

My wife gifted me a Reliable 36"x20" fish bag for Father's Day. The problem is it doesn't fit in my Revo 11 tankwell. It DOES fit on the bow and stays put when i lash it in place. With ice in it, it weighs about 20lbs, more with fish in there. Could you guys foresee that extra weight in the front as a problem? The Revo 11 has a 300lb max capacity, and I weigh about 145.

I'm thinking of going out tomorrow in the AM for a little bit of chrome hunting. Windy.com says 7-8ft swells and a 12sec period. Will I see any problems with those kinds of conditions when exiting/entering the jaws?

General Fishing Tips / Rockfishing is too expensive for me
« on: August 13, 2019, 02:49:44 PM »
Right now I probably lose about $4 in tackle every time I snag up and have to cut off my line. For those of you who rockfish, how do you guys minimize the cost of losing tackle? I.E. do you have a really cheap source of sinkers or do you make your own, do you cheap out on the hooks, etc?

Recipes / Ling Head for Soup
« on: August 06, 2019, 01:27:56 PM »
Just an FYI for those who were thinking of using ling cod head for soup, it tastes great!

I caught a ling the other day and realized the head makes up a huge portion of the body. There seems to be a lot of meat inside. My mom took the head, removed the gills and jaws, and cooked it up in a "Maeuntung" korean fish stew and it was amazing! The soup has a flavor similar to crab soup. My kids ate the eyeballs.

They also made halibut tempura and, yes, halibut sashimi. My dad and uncle are chefs who have owned seafood and sushi restaurants for over 40 years so I figure they know what they are doing.

General Talk / Cleaning corroded contacts in fishfinder power cable
« on: August 02, 2019, 10:38:30 AM »
The contacts in my fish finder power cable are getting corroded (bluish powdery film on the contacts). The contacts are female (recessed) so that I can't just wipe them. Is there any way to clean it out, i.e. immersing it in some type of solution?

General Talk / Does dramamine make you sleepy and/or tired?
« on: July 21, 2019, 04:03:20 PM »
I've never needed to take any dramamine out on the bay even in small craft advisory conditions. However, given the warnings about swells, I decided to take some on my ocean trip. The entire time out on the water I was really drowsy, and once on land I felt very tired as if sapped of all strength. It could have just been the exhilaration of being out on the water that drained me but just wondering what your experiences are? I'm thinking of skipping the dramamine altogether on the next trip.

General Talk / How many hours can you last on a kayak?
« on: July 07, 2019, 10:33:24 PM »
I started out on average about 4 hours at a time on the kayak but lately I've stayed out for as long as 6 hours. How long do you/can you last fishing on a kayak?

Recipes / Grilled Halibut Fillet with Crispy Skin?
« on: July 01, 2019, 11:57:42 AM »
Has anyone tried eating halibut fillets with the skin on? I do that with salmon... when grilled skin side down I can get the skin really crispy. Salmon skin doesn't seem nearly as slimy as halibut skin.

Hi guys! I'd like to try going out in the ocean for the first time this year. I normally use a 3mm wetsuit for the bay and so far that's been good for me (I've never been dunked but I've been waist high sometimes when launching and it's never been a problem). From what I've read, that seems too thin for the ocean. It took me a while to find something that actually fits me and the one I wear doesn't come in anything thicker. I was wondering if there's a local place (preferably in the East Bay) that might let me try stuff on!

Went kayak fishing out of Berkeley on Saturday hugging the pier and limited out, 22", 25" and 27". This was past the pier itself and further out to where the pilings are. This is only my 3rd time out this year and no skunks yet so I am very grateful! I haven't seen any other kayakers in the area so figure I give you guys a heads up.
