I have a Humminbird Helix 5 DF-GPS but I cant get it to give me a depth reading beyond 200 feet.
Can anyone recommend a unit that has the power to go 500' that's a good fit for a yak?

Hey NCKA brothers and sisters - Forgot to add price! $900 ask, with a discount for NCKAers. Yak is still available. All the accessories are attached via kayak rivets. Good, solid attachments, and I seal all holes and perimeters with tons of Marine Goop.

For Sale / Price slashed to $500 ... Fully rigged tandem fishing yak

Gotta make room for the new tandem Oasis!

For sale: A broad, super stable 12'6" Ocean Kayaks Malibu 2 tandem with everything you need to get on the water catching fish this weekend, minus the price tag and hassle of setting up a new rig. Excellent starter rig for shore-fishers looking to expand their range. Features:
--Fish it single or double with full functionality either way; fish single either from the back seat for surf launches or the middle seat for harbor launches
--Livewell with timer pump. Make your own bait and keep them swimming strong
--Color Humminbird Helix 5 fishfinder/GPS unit; transponder on flexible arm to provide water temp and no breakage/snagging in kelp beds
--12V battery and charger
--Two SeaAirSports high-backed seats with two rodholders and a storage pouch each
--Rugged PVC cart with solid rubber tires
--Hull: beat up, faded, ugly but fully solid = instant dock cred. No hatches means less chance of water intrusion. Filled with about 20 pool noodles for backup flotation
--Rod holders for both single or double configuration, without interfering with your paddle stroke. THIRTEEN rod holders includes one Scotty that can be moved to fit your single or double configuration. Rod holder placement allows trolling with rods in front of you and your fishing buddy in all situations. Easily fishes three rods plus gaff single; six rods double.
--Two paddles with leashes
--Two super nice Kokotat life preservers
This is a homebrew fishing yak and would do best with an owner who doesn't care how it looks. It works great and is light enough to wheel down the path at Bluff Cove in PV, with all the features needed to fish Redondo Canyon. Dog not included. Playa del Rey

I rigged a Malibu 2 a number of years ago and I think it's a great, stable (but slow and wet) fishing platform. Just load that sucker up with 2 (or four if you can fit them) recessed rod holders behind the rear seat, and three Scotty holders in front of the rear seat (but out of the way of the front and rear paddle strokes -- two on on side to hold a depth finder mount and one to hold a rod, then one to hold the rod on the other side), and another one at the bow in front ahead of the paddle stroke. Then install enough eyelets to hold down a 3 gallon pet food holder bait tank with a bilge pump in and a gravity drain out between the rear and front seats. I'd also invest in high backed seats with rod holders. And boom, it is a slow, wet fishing machine.

I find the Cobra Tandem higher and drier, but less stable particularly when someone heavy is in front. It's great if it's just your lighter female friend up front, but I don't like the way mine behaves with heavier people in front. It's actually really quite good as a solo as long as the bait tank is full, as it evens out the weight nicely. Either way, they're both pigs to paddle or surf. Happy to provide additional thoughts on mods. Good fishing!

For Sale / Tandem fishing rig - Cobra

Changing over to a Malibu 2 that I will mod for fishing, so I'm selling off my Cobra Tandem, which is fully rigged (DF, baitwell, rodholders, etc.) I'm down in LA (Playa del Rey) so if anyone knows SoCal anglers, this would be a great beginning yak fully rigged at an affordable price. If you could crosspost to any SoCal sites, gracias! Here's the Craigslist listing. Thanks! HappyDab http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/boa/5833036776.html

Good 'un.

I've done the Ocean Kayaks Malibu 2 fully rigged. (Very stable, a pig to paddle, low and wet.) I'm currently using a Cobra Tandem fully rigged (Not particularly stable, especially with two people, doesn't track well, high and dry.)

Has anyone rigged up a Malibu Pro 2? Would like your review if so.

Oh, or drifting small pieces of night crawler behind a BB shot. With the wind. That's the leisure approach.

I've had my best luck at Chabot towing little 1.5" powerbait white or chartruese grubs on a four foot leader behind a bullet weight you'd use for Texas rigging a plastic worm. But I've been skunked there too.

Headed out for the first time at Albion this Friday/Saturday. Can y'all give me the skinny on best launch spots/navigation hazards/tides/currents to be aware of? Hopefully the weather is sweet. Thanks all.

For the sake of a good story, and based on the fatty description and the nose description, I'll chip in on The Landlord.

Will either do Oil Piers triangle to Rincon and back, or head out at Haskells. Anyone have thoughts on that?
