There is nothing on their site about the fishing on 9/14/2014.
Why do all these tourneys have to overlap? MBK and Simply Fishing, TRW and Kayak Connection. Dang it, I like to travel.
Hey guys,
The date for Kayak Connection Fishing Derby has changed to September 7, 2014!!!

Good news - we got Ocean Kayak to donate a new Predator 13 OR their brand new Prowler Big Game Angler II - winner's choice. How cool is that? :headbang:
Hey Carl, last year most of the participants launched from the 'hand launch ramp' and I recall that's where the official weigh-in station was located too. I would plan to park and launch there again this year. Parking costs $10/day, I think.
Then after the weigh-in, you can either repark your car closer to KC or simply walk over there (it's on the opposite side of the harbor). Last year I reparked my car and was lucky enough to find a spot on Lake St.
Here's a link to KC's location: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Kayak+Connection/@36.9666407,-122.0011696,109m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x0:0x5040b89cce42e55a
And in the map below, I circled KC in blue and the hand launch ramp in red (also circled the alternate hand launch by Aldo's by the jetty...which is where some people will probably launch to avoid parking fees fyi).
Yeah calling anything on the phone is rather time consuming requiring use of relay services for a deaf guy haha. I was hoping to pay online if possible. Phone would be a last resort.

Paddle/Pedal? Sail?
Is the weigh-in station going to be located at the hand launch ramp in the NW part of the lower harbor again?

Hey Guys,
I wanted to show off the sweet Werner Paddle that Werner has agreed to donate. It's the Camano Hooked version. Carbon/Fiberglass blend shaft with a super lightweight fiberglass blade. This thing is so easy to paddle it practically pops out of the water!
Major thanks go out to Werner for the donation of our 2nd place prize. I know Nathan Tsuji is super stoked on the one he was awarded last year!
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the 7th!
Hey Jim!
Absolutely - bring Valentina out, too. I'm sure we can come up with something for the groms. Gotta start getting the next generation hooked early!
Get your gear ready! Once again Kayak Connection will be hosting our roots fishing derby. We will be looking for big fish, lots of fun, and the opportunity to help out a worthy cause - the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.
The derby kicks off Sunday, September 7th out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. Entries are $35 per person, and all profits benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.
1st Prize = Old Town Predator Kayak or Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game (winner’s choice)
2nd Prize = Werner Fishing Paddle
3rd Prize = Extrasport Fishing Personal Floatation Device
Largest Game Fish Takes It!
We'll have weigh-ins and BBQ at 1PM back at our shop at 413 Lake Ave, right along the harbor. We'll also have several fishing kayaks for rent, as well, be sure and call the shop to reserve yours if interested.
The entry fee for the derby is $35 - all profits will go to benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project.
Rules are posted below:
1) All fish must be caught from a person powered kayak, no motors or sails, or other boat assistance.
2) Fish must be legally hooked, fought, and landed (solo) by individual angler.
3) Must have a valid fishing license and adhere to all DFW regulations.
4) Launch and landing from public launch docks of Santa Cruz Harbor only. Travel to other areas for launching and fishing is not permitted.
5) 1:00 PM is the cut-off weigh-in time. Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by 1PM to qualify.
6) Heaviest weighed sport-fish wins.
7) Leopard and thresher sharks included, but no other sharks or rays qualify.
8 ) If two fish have exact equal weight, then the longer of the two wins.

10) Waiver forms must be signed and entry fees paid prior to launching on 9/07/14.

Crows Nest near the boat launch is a nice place Craig. Especially if you can get a good window seat.

Ya, who are the past winner's?
Who amongst you hard-charging anglers has an iPhone, and is willing to review a waterproof charging case?

Deal is I give it to you this weekend, you use it for a few weeks and wirte up a quick review for KFM- then keep it for your very own. Value is around $100.
PM me for transfer plans.
PS: I'll be competing in the Derby this year, so bring your "A" game!!!

Yea Rob, join us on Saturday! What time were you thinking of launching? I usually launch between 5:30-6 am. But can adjust that as needed!
Bushy:
I have an Iphone. But if you want it really tested at depths, let Big Jim take it. I tend to stay on top of the water. :smt004

LOL! I don't bring my phone IN the water with me, but I do have a GPS app on the phone that I use (even though I only have two marks so far :smt005), and have tried two cases so far and have not been very impressed with either so am looking for another alternative..
:smt006
Sincerely,
Jim

I was just down at Anglers Choice in Capitola (on 41st Ave) and Julia wanted me to pass along that she says 'Hello' to everyone who frequents the store. Very nice husband/wife team that owns & operates the store. Good rod & reel selection. GREAT selection of individual Big Hammer swim baits in a variety of sizes/colors as well as B-2 squid in 3" & 9" I believe. Fly fishing gear too! Boxes, nets, gaffs & bonkers too....
She says a number of NCKA members have been in the past few days to gear up for the tourney!
BigJim ... she says you're spending too much time freediving and not enough time fishing with a rod & reel! :smt005 He words ... not mine! :smt003
If you're in the area ... go check them out!
She has a few pic's of you posted on the pillar in the middle of the reel display/checkout
I think she has a crush on you :smt007 :smt003
He must need a new kayak. :smt003

All the more experienced fishing derby meisters wanted to fish in this tournament, so I am excited to say that I have been nominated the derby meister for Kayak Connection's derby this Saturday.
For those last minute sign ups, or rentals, I will be at Kayak Connection around 6:30 am on the day of the clinic.
As you know the weigh in is 1 pm, but I will be at the dock on the west side of the harbor starting at 11 am for those of you who slay em' early.
Dave and Jessica will be preparing some killer BBQ for the awards ceremony, so stick around, and please bring your own folding chairs, our facilities are a bit limited.
I am very excited this event has resurrected, and wish you all good luck!
I lent RBark (ryan) and his brother Matt my trident for tomorrow, only i couldn't find the seat!
Does anyone have a trident seat that you can loan them tomorrow morning?
Sorry Ryan/Matt :)

I've always enjoyed the Kayak connection derby cause i get to see a lot of the familiar faces that I fish with
throughout the summer. The key word for this derby, for me, was "LUCK!" and lots of it.
1) Pat (Cen Coast) got sideline due to illness :smt010
2) I got a hailmary salmon in 60ft of water.
3) Fishcomb (Tony), mishap with his trophy halibut
4) Eugene's unwilling to make salmon leaders :smt005
I was stoked to participate in this tournament. I had fun in the past and look forward to another great year.
I got a chance to look at the forecast the night before and saw a big south swell move through. I knew the fishing was going to be tough all around.
Arrived at Aldos at 5:30 a.m. and ran into smokeinthewater. We chatted it up and soon made our way to the water.
I didn't mark any bait out front like I did last week so decide to go to the mile buoy and work the reefs. It was slow picking so I decided to move towards the lighthouse.
As i moved past SC4 I was marking bait. I was able to pull some good sized chovies and threw them into the live well.
I took my bait and made my way towards shallow water as I trooched an anchovy near the bottom.
As I got closer, I saw a ledge and marked some bait moving over it. Right then, my pole goes TAP TAP TAP. I thought for sure it was probably a Crocker messing with my anchovy, but it looked a little different. I slowly took my pole out of the holder and reeled in line. As my hook set itself, I felt the familiar salmon shakes. SALMON?? I was confused but as the fish surfaced I saw chrome!! SALMON!!! and FISH ON!
I got it to the surface and then it made the Salmon Dash, LEFT, RIGHT, OUT and under my boat. I let it tire out and when it was ready, I came in for an easy net job. At that moment another salmon jump right next to my boat TWICE!! and belly flopped. wow??! how random.
After landing my salmon I saw Tony (FISHCOMB) Dash towards us in his hobie. At the rate he was moving, I thought he had rockets on his yak. He dropped a live chovy down the bottom and needless to say what happened next.
Weighed my fish in and found out I was the winner when BIGJIM crushed my hand with his signature handshake!! OUCH!
Saw all the familiar faces and had a blast. Of course, the big winner was the salmon and trout project! We raised 2k for a great cause. Thanks again for Kayak Connection for putting on this tournament. They are great people with a good heart for our community. Support them and buy local guys. - Keith
