I think with all this water and mountain snow, the lake should supply a great late pre-spawn bass, shallow trout and deep structure pan fish bite. When this lake is one, it's on and so much fun. 20 - 30 fish days are not uncommon.

Mark it in your calendars.

Thanks Pat!

Attached is event and camping map and logo which i'll put up next week. Registration link will also be up next week. Day of registration is also available.

Question was purposed to me... what are your thoughts..

"Can we add Catfish to the mix? Rollins has some good catfish and can be caught in many of the crappie locations. No live bait but manufactured dough baits be ok?" What's your guys thoughts on this?

Me - Maybe keeping it as a 3 fish limit but adding a forth species could be an option. Catfish can be large and a single fish like that within a full 3 fish limit could secure a winning bag no matter. hmmmm. Looking to make this event fun yet challenging for those multi species enthusiasts like myself. Mike

I am in either way. Thank you Rider for the info about live bait.

Post by: Rider on March 10, 2017, 12:52:59 PM
Live bait is illegal at Rollins.

So I am fine with Catfish but does this mean we can use other types of bait?

Also is it 3 fish of one single species or 3 fish one from each species???

Thought I'd be that guy.

I have a question about my Hawg Trough.   30 inches is just way to long for Crappie, Spots and trout.
I'm going to cut out sections 10 through 16.  It will store better in the yak.  Anyone have any other suggestions?

If it's artificials-only, then I'd leave out catfish. But if we're allowed to use bait, then yes add them.
When Rider says no live bait allowed at Rollins, I assume he means no minnows. But live crawlers, mealworms, crickets should be fine. Especially if you want an 18" crappie!  :smt002

Just buy another smaller, cheaper trough instead of hacksawing your hog trough!
...unless you are trying to cheat. In which case, a 12" crappie will now appear to be 18" long!

Also it illegal to catch bluegill and use them for bait.

If they add catfish they will include manufactured catfish dough baits.
One of each species.  Total inches from a 3 fish limit.

The entry has also changed, lowered to $25 pre and $35 day of.

If I were you I wouldn't cut it. I've seen a few big cats close to 30" come out of that lake. Plus that lake has browns, not saying you'll get a brown 30" but there are some big ones.

Catfish - yes
Any type of bait - NO!

You can catch catfish without bait.  I just caught another one this weekend on the fly.

If you can't catch a catfish without bait, then I have no sympathy for you.  If I can do it, so can you!

I want to give a shout out to all the noobs. There's no better way to join the NCKA family than attending one of the tournaments. It's a special time attending your first event, feeling the love and being welcomed into the brotherhood. Even if you can only come up for the day it's worth the trip. Camping for the weekend is even better. The fishing should be off the hook! Maybe we should hope for on the hook! :smt044

Got plans for friday night dinner!?!?!?! we will be having a fundraiser dinner for scouts and girls camp from 6:00 till 8pm. If your cruising up around that time dinner will be at LDS church one exit before colfax turn off. just exit,  go left at stop, go left back over freeway to stop, right turn, up and over big hill (1.1 miles) to bottom of hill, turn into driveway on left, head up to church building and come on in!!!. Cinco de mayo taco bar (GOOD FOOD!!!) A silent auction with desserts and donated Items. (non fishing) Might just be one of my firepits up for grabs with wood in it.  :smt003 $6.00 per person or $30.00 a family. I will be the auctioneer and would be great to see anyone hungry that shows up. No roaming missionaries or religious implications or addresses taken :smt044 Will be a good time! Some of those desserts are legendary and bidding can get out of hand! More info will be added tomorrow. i'll edit this post with address tomorrow. Please RSVP so I can watch for you and add to tally of folks attending. (for grocery purchasing purposes) Right on the way to the lake....

Was on lake yesterday. The water is back to being super muddy even at the inlets. Water temps are varying a lot from 55-61 and there is a surface algae bloom forming on the main lake. The campground area was really wet and a ton of drift wood all over the shoreline. It's all blocked off at this time and I seriously wouldn't be surprised if the had everyone camp along the upper road.

Fish were caught and fish were lost. Only got spots no teout or crappie.

Hoping the current storm doesn't cause it to hold the muddy conditions for next two weeks. But it has been taking a coupl of weeks for it to change a substantial amount.

But it will be what it will be.

Yep - what he said....except for the catching part! I skunked hard. I hit up Weimarian last Friday to get some shore fishing intel for Rollins and promised I would report back. Looks like Rider beat me to it. Wasn't able to bring my yak, so fished the shore pretty hard starting at the beach and slowly moving towards the inlet area. Not even a bite. Threw everything from senkos to swimbaits (was targeting Bass only). Water was very muddy with quite a bit of debris floating. The campground has seen better days, for sure. Very wet, tons of duck poop, and driftwood washed around everywhere. The sites closer to the inlet seemed to be in better condition. Good luck all! I'm looking forward to hearing how everyone does.

Only 4 more days to preregister before the cutoff.
Then only morning of registration will be accepted.

Looks like we have a week of really good weather coming up, in the high 70's and possible 80's. As soon as this lake heats up just a bit more and clears the bite will be on. The back coves will start to clear first. Bass will be starting in to bed up soon too. Hopefully we timed it right!

OK the EGO net package came in for the Revo13. This kayak is looking good. Someone is going home with a totally ready to fish rig. Hope to see you guys up there!

3 more days to register!
Also if you're camping, you might want to start making your reservations now. Phone: (530) 272-6100. There are also 2 other camp grounds on the lake if you don't like Green Horn.

We also will be having a special guest angler competing. This guy has recent been selected to join the US Hobie Fishing team and will be representing the USA at Hobie Worlds in 2018. WOW!!! He will also be armed with his new secret bait.... The melted Neg! Bring your A game guys, he's in it to win it!  :smt006

OK, next up on the Revo13 build, we have some Ram mounting equipment for the Lowrance Hook4. There is no other way to mount your fishfinder than RAM, period. Plus a cover! We are close to $1000.00 in just accessories with more to come.... Looking forward to seeing out there!

Hey Guys!!! TODAY is the last day to pre-register!

We have a great field of anglers and the weather is looking awesome. The lake is beautiful and should be prime for the event. The campground is cleaning up all the wood "fire" around the lake front sites, so "launch from yo site" camping is looking good. We'll most likely will have a pony of something local and yummy the night before and during awards to enjoy. Bring your wife, bring your kids, no reason not to come out, have fun and hang out. Hills Flat Lumber will also be doing a FREE Hobie Demp day. If there is a boat or SUP you've been wanting to try, come on out and have some fun!

If you feel like you don't know the lake and/or wont be successful, PM me I'll give you the skinny on how to get it done on this lake.

And besides all that, Hills Flat Lumber has GENEROUSLY DONATED a brand new Revo13 for Raffle. I've been able to collect over $1000.00 in accessories from our awesome sponsors. I'm talking great stuff too! This is an awesome plug and play boat! So bring extra raffle money! PLUS - Proceeds are going to PIF to help with those who needs help.

Like I said last day to Pre-register for $25.00. Do it! Or I hope to see you the morning of.... remember to bring your paperwork :)

I think with all this water and mountain snow, the lake should supply a great late pre-spawn bass, shallow trout and deep structure pan fish bite. When this lake is one, it's on and so much fun. 20 - 30 fish days are not uncommon.

Mark it in your calendars.

Hey all, I just picked up this tournament board for this weekend - need an official ruling (pun intended) on whether or not this measuring device is ok to use.

It's not a trough, which is what is driving the question.

Thanks!

Ok guys my Pre-fish report for the Roundup.... heehaw!

Met Caddy Chris at about 630 am at the Greenhorn launch. No wind, water temp 61 deg. Starting looking for crappie first, but I realized i forgot my panfish stuff. I did have a few 1/8oz hair jigs which I've caught them on before so I started looking. I spent 2 hours and lost 4 jigs but I did manage close to a dozen small/ medium bass. I was done with that. I then started trolling for trout on the way to the main body of the lake, one hit, LDR. I trolled for about an hour and marked lots of fish but with no wind they were deeper than I expected and didn't have any means of getting down to them.

Sure enough I was on the main body and started bass fishing. I started catching fish right away on jerk baits, shakey head and senkos. I might was good but all the fish were about 12-15'. Sure enough I started targeting main body points and the wind then kicked in. This is what I was waiting for... the wind creates current on this lake and it's very noticeable from the red sand and debris lines. I started catching good fish, the biggest going over 20". I caught about a half dozed solid fish... who says Rollins doesn't have good fish! Maybe they should fish with me  :smt001

So to sum it all up, the lake is on WFO!!! The water temp hit 70 degrees! These fish are very active and eating like crazy. i think we timed the event perfectly and we should see some nice CPR fish on Saturday.

If you want to attend this event we will have day of registration from 5am - 6am. Come on out and get some bendo!

Saturday temps are dropping to the low 50's, big low is moving in.  Expect the fishing to change a bit.

Hey all, I just picked up this tournament board for this weekend - need an official ruling (pun intended) on whether or not this measuring device is ok to use.

It's not a trough, which is what is driving the question.

Thanks!

Mike,
It does not say in your rules that it needs to be a Hawg Trough. If you would have stated that before in the rules I would back you up on this, but I believe at this point any board should be legal. I'm sticking up for the new guy here and anyone else that shows up with something other than an official Hawg Trough. The expandable boards etc should all be legal at this point 2 days before the tourney due to your lack of info in the rules about "official" boards.

Just my .02.

Absolutely. It's not illegal nor is there a rule established. There will never be a rule like that. But we both know this board is not going to work as in "effective" measuring device, not because it's not an official hog trough, because it's yellow on white and in the sun could compromise the photos. That's easy to see. It would suck to have to DQ fish that cannot be verified because we cannot read the length. This is why I offered to bring an extra.

Yea, that was a concern of mine as well - what if I trace over the lines with sharpie and present for inspection at check-in?

Mike does have an extra trough he is bringing for me to borrow, but I'm not sure if there are any other competitors that were also unsure.

For sure, make sure to marker the numbers too.

We've had others with different boards in the past, including the pullout like Rob mentioned. But honestly that yellow on white might be disastrous or keep the fish out of the water for a long period trying to get the right light.

Hopefully others read this and do a test shot in the sun and zoom in to make sure it works. Even the white boards with black marker lines sometimes don't show very well in direct sun/ camera angle.

Let me know if you want me to bring my extra.

Please do bring the extra - I'll follow best practices and return that gold/white one and order something proper online when time allows!

Anyone know a direct line to someone at the greenhorn campsite? I've called between 4pm-7pm & left multiple voicemails over the last 3 weeks. No one has returned my calls. Been trying to get a campsite for Fri,Sat & possibly Sun.

The owner Mike, unfortunately suffered a stroke recently and his wife has been running everything and helping him to recover. Also it's still off season. Show up, there should be plenty of sites available.

On another note, I've been talking with people and answering questions. It's amazing to listen to their ideas and strategies. This is why I love multi-species events, anglers get very creative and start to think outside the box. They have to make real time decisions otw to better utilize they're time. These kinds of events really makes an angler better overall IMO. Multi-species is challenging to say the least and not for everyone...  :smt119

Due to some personal problems with obsessive tourney disorder, I will be on the water but not in the game. :smt012 Seems I just can't get it together with the drugs I'm taking. blood pressure and stress problems I can't handle. I will be visiting, playing and cheering y'all on. Probably will be my MO this year till I can get off (if) the meds or learn to cope. As Mooch said (saved my life) GET YOURSELF CHECKED. I was 100% no symptoms and near death. On a happier note. For the Dinner, fundraiser Auction Friday night, a painting was donated by An Auburn based artist, Frank Ordaz http://faso.com/fineartviews/92486/frank-ordaz-expressive-portraits

Kind of a big deal https://www.facebook.com/frankordazart/

It is of half dome in yosemite and is on a wood wall box. This is a signed oil painting worth $400-600.00 Will be sold to highest bidder at Dinner. Starts at 6pm

OK guys, we're going to have some clouds in the AM on Sat. So, it might be a little dark at 6am launch. Please bring a head lamp and/or pole light for your boats. Better safe than sorry. Thanks.

Ok guys, what a great time. The weather was a little bit colder on tourney day but that's ok. It didn't stop the fish from biting!
Here are your results for the 2017 Rollins Lake Roundup:

1st Place - Sue Vang 41.5"
Trout - 12"
Crappie - 14"
Bass - 15.5"

2nd Place - Bee Xiong 32.0"
Crappie - 12.75"
Bass - 19.25!!!

3rd Place - Ken Dye 31.75"
Trout - 11"
Panfish - 7.5"
Bass - 13.25

Congrats to all the winners and thank you to all the anglers that came out to support the event. Also I want to thank our sponsors...
Hills Flat Lumber in Colfax and Grass Valley.
Lowrance Electronics
EGO landing gear and nets
RAM accessories
Scotty Fishing Products

Without these fine sponsors this event wouldn't happen, especially Hills Flat Lumber and David Caddy Hobie dealer in Colfax, CA for his continued support and who donated that beautiful Revo13 which was worth $3600 bucks! Awesome boat! How it worked is, only anglers that register for the event get a shot and can purchase extra tickets for this boat and you must be present to win. On extra ticket sales we raised $840 for PIF and David graciously will add an extra $160 to make it a cool grand. That's AWESOME!!!

The lucky winner of the boat was Kyle De Francisco of Sacramento. Kyle is a newer member of NCKA and a really great guy. Kyle purchased an extra $100 in tickets to help support the PIF and it payed off big time! Congrats Kyle and welcome to the NCKA family!

It was great to see everyone hanging out, laughing, telling stories around the bonfire, kids running around laughing and playing with sparklers, eating smores, all of it, it was great and I cannot wait till next year. I was also very happy to get out with my son Branson on Sat for a few hours during the event. I took him to a couple of my "spots" and he caught a couple really good fish, including a 19" fatty small mouth, definitely his new personal best.

Thanks again guys and hope to see yall next year!!!!
