Title: Official Crabfest 2015 Report
Post by: vwool on January 25, 2015, 03:33:39 PM
Thank you everyone who attended! My family and I had a blast.

Another Crabfest is in the books. Some may have called Crabfest 2015 “Windfest”, but those that stayed were rewarded with a beautiful afternoon. The two days before the event were beautiful and wind free, the temperature in the high 60’s. The day of the event was a different story, many awoke to gale force winds reported to be 27 knots. Over 100 kayak anglers still showed up to register and only a few ventured out, some decided to launch inside the harbor for their luck at catching a crab.

As the day progressed the wind started to calm and more anglers ventured out in hopes of bringing in the biggest crab. Those that didn’t head out did what NCKA does best; chill. It was a great site to see everyone hanging out having a great time despite the conditions. Just a little before noon it was time to set up for what some would call the best part of the day, the “potluck”. All of the awards were set up and raffle prizes were displayed for all to see and the food began to arrive. The potluck included so many dishes ranging from paella, carrot cake, elk meatballs to fresh made sushi. There was enough food to go around and nobody went home hungry.

Even though the conditions were not great, anglers still were able to bring crab to the weigh in table to compete. In total there were eight Rock crab and seven Dungeness crab that were brought in.  The biggest Rock crab went to Brian Turner, his rock crab measured in at 5.9” and weighed 1.26 lbs. Brian took home some Promar gear, a Hoo-Rag, and the biggest Rock crab plaque donated by Bill Perryman.
For Dungeness Crab, Third Place went to Eric Roberts “TexasBoy”, his crab measured in at 6.17” and weighed 1.5 lbs. Second Place went to Kenny Truong, his crab measured in at 6.22” and weighed 1.19 lbs. Both Eric and  Kenny took home various Promar traps/gear and a Hoo-Rag (the better bandanna). First place went to Sonny aka Sailfish, his Dungeness crab measured in at 6.82” and weighed in at 1.89 lbs. With the weather not being great Sonny decided to launch inside the harbor and it paid off for him. Sonny took home a collapsible Promar Trap, some Promar Gear, a Hoo-rag and the 2015 1st place plaque hand carved by Bill Perryman.

After the awards were held the raffle commenced, where over $1000 was raised for www.dyf.org , prizes were donated from the sponsors of the event. The Sponsors of the event included Eddyline, Promar/Ahi, Yakattack, Headwaters Kayak Shop, Kokatat, Lowrance, Hoo-Rag, and Kala Brand Music. NCKA members ScottV, Trianglelaguna, and PakehaCherie were generous and donated items to the raffle as well.

The prize that everyone had their eye on was the Eddyline Caribbean 12. Everyone who registered the morning of the event received a raffle ticket for the kayak. At the end of the event a ticket was pulled and all but the last number were called. Ten hopeful participants touched the kayak in hopes of taking it home and as the last number was called only one had a bigger smile. The brand new Eddyline went to a new member of NCKA known as Grim Reefer from Fresno.

A big thank you goes to all the sponsors and all those that helped out in various ways. This years artwork was a hit and was completed by Amadeo Bachar, his work can be seen at www.abachar.com. The biggest thank you goes to my wife Narisa, who has been supportive of this event since day one. She has helped with so much that goes on behind the scenes. I am looking forward to next year’s event and am looking at changing things up a bit. Please stay tuned for more info.

Please post your pics and report here. I will post winners when I get home.

Victor

That's what I was thinking.  :smt003 I was happy for one day otw. Bummed that I missed out on the potluck though, and the raffle. I enjoyed seeing everyone and meeting some new folks. We had a good dinner Saturday even without the crab. BBQ some oysters and made some clam chowder. Sharon found a crab in one her oysters. I guess they live in oysters on the east coast. The wind was pretty fierce. That is my first time experiencing Blowdega. I still have almost all my bait left so I'm looking for a crabbing meetup real soon.  :smt006

I was really bummed (at myself) for not going to crabfest.. meeting all the gang, playing ukulele in the moonlight, feasting on exotic food...
I KNOW you guys did all that...
But i want to thank you for lying to me.. telling me there were not crab and too much wind.  The pictures of flattened tents were especially cool (how did you do that?).

thanks guys. You're just tits!

Craig,

Great meeting you,  and thanks for posting pictures.

Victor, great, great job. And I hope you were able to raise a lot of money.

Dan, your support is always appreciated.

And to the guy who won the Eddyline. After hearing what you went through to get you and your kids up to Crabfest from Fresno. And the effort to expose your children to the open air, ocean camping, crabbing, and the sense of brotherhood, I can not think of a more deserving person to take home the big prize. Your little girls smile while she was sitting in the new kayak was priceless. Good karma all around.

Great weekend, in spite of wind, and looking forward to next year.

The crab in the oyster is a female pea crab. They are "pea" sized up to a dime in diameter. The females have a clear carapace that allows you to see the orange gonads. The males are similar in size with an opaque carapace yellowish in color. Not much is known about their feeding habits, they seem to be commensal with the mollusc host.  Ive had my share of oysters and only come across one once.  :smt006

:smt003 That's my new buddy boat going under the GG Bridge. Thanks Craig for the generous act of transporting that kayak 350 miles for me. Not bad for ten bucks in swim baits.  :smt003 Don't ask for the shirt off his back, he will give it to you.

Another great Crabfest in the books.  Had a great time and meet tons of new people.  The weather could have been better the day of the event, but the 2 days prior were perfect.  Good enough to where I was able to catch a couple small perch on the fly right in front of camp.  Already looking forward to next year.  Might turn it into a week long trip instead of just 4 days.  I love the beach!!

Thanks everyone for making Crabfest so fun for our family!
In spite of our little girl's cold(first with a bad cough) she had a blast!
Nights were kinda hard with the little one coughing and sniffing for most of bedtime - all of us in a king bed.
Luckily, we had a pretty cozy hotel nearby.

Of course I brought the yak and crab stuff, but, never even got it wet! :smt044
It was great to visit everyone, and just enjoy the Crabfest vibe.
Ukejam was great, thanks to everyone who joined in to play and sing, it was good to get a small fix of the stuff I like so much!
Not to worry though, as I got shut down early when my daughter informed me that it was time to go to bed! :smt005

I vow to actually launch at next year's Crabfest and stay for the whole event.
Had to bail before things even got started, with a sick Olivia and a cold Ashley prodding me to hit the road and get over to gram and papa's house. Felt pretty bad about leaving the jetty, but duty called...

Congrats to all who launched, lunched, caught crabs, bought crabs and generally had an awesome time!
Big Thanks to Victor et al for a successful event!

See you all next Crabfest! :smt001

Can't thank you enough Victor and Narisa - for again getting the NCKA family all together for another Crab Fest. It's a lot of work to get one of these coordinated, and as usual it was an event no one should have missed! That little Ari is too darn cute! So adorable!

Despite the sudden weather change the morning of CF (it is Bodega, after all)....spirits were high and people were excited. It was really good to visit with Dan and Bill (Headwaters) while they braved the cold and helped sell raffle tickets that morning. By the afternoon, the wind had died down quite a bit and we were rewarded with a huge buffet of food for the potluck! Scott's "custom art" apple pie was the bomb!

I regretfully didn't get to play ukes as planned, but found Tony Saturday night at site #93 and we exchanged ideas about having a uke group meet-up every so often. It would be fun to get some practice in!

The sponsors are fantastic, as always - and give us so many great things to "hope for" while we are holding on tightly to our tickets! I was lucky enough to walk away with a few more supplies for my crabbing arsenal. My hubby was crossing his fingers for the Eddyline  :smt044, but we're even close to having the right set of numbers. Instead we were glad to see it go to such a nice family (I was talking to Grim Reefer on Saturday on the beach - he was talking about what had happened on their way to Bodega! Gadzooks).

Whoo yoooo! Fun, fun weekend!

Thanks!  Victor, Dan and the crew for hosting another epic event.  I didn't get on the water much but prepared to go out Sunday morning before I realized the conditions were so rough.  Someone got a picture of me suited up in my dry suit and my new Cowboy's Fuzzy Duds Sled Head balaclava.  Cowboy's Fuzzy Duds is a small company owned by a friend of my son.  He makes and sells some very unique and fun clothing items, including his newest, the Sled Head.  If anyone is interested in seeing or getting any of his "DUDS", he can be reached at www.fuzzyduds.com or www.cowboysfuzzyduds.com.

Hey everyone, finally, a chance to sit down and say thanks to a bunch of you.   One should really plan an extra “free” day when returning from a trip before you have to go back to work.  I can't help it though, always want to squeeze in every last minute.

What started out more than a little rough turned out to be a great weekend. This was my family’s first trip to an organized event like this and I have to say I didn’t meet a single person that wasn’t incredibly friendly and helpful.  From those that talked with me on the beach and answering all my newbie questions to those that made me feel like I was at Grandma’s house when I was a kid (Feeding me till I was about to pop).  Sometimes, a newcomer can feel like a bit of an outsider. Not so with this group. There was no shortage of hospitality. You were all awesome.

Victor, awesome thing you are doing here.  All your hard work for a noble cause is very much appreciated.  Dan,  I am so glad that I made my way to your shop three years ago. My son and I love the tuna. It has brought us many good memories and will bring many more I’m sure.  Not to mention the 3 girls to follow.  Ben (BMB), thanks again for the offer to let me test your slayer.  I would say it worked out pretty well in the end though.   Had I borrowed your boat, I’m not sure how I would have gotten all three back. And to think, I was happy as could be after winning the crab ring AND the live bait tube!!!  SCORE!!!

To all the sponsors that made this event possible,  Eddyline, Promar, Lowrance, Kokatat, Yakattack, Headwaters, hoo-rag and Kala, thank you for contributing so generously.  To everyone that cooked for the potluck….WOW, WHAT A FEAST!!!

I am already counting the days to Crabfest 2016. Heck, maybe next year I will be able to actually catch a crab or at least get my boat wet.  Speaking of which, we may head back to that area for the president’s day 3 day weekend. I have to at least get out once! Anyone think they might be there? (I think it’s Feb 14,15,16.)

I will post some pics of the boat as I add goodies. See you OTW.

God Bless all and stay safe.

...

I'm wondering if there is going to be any crab there.  :smt004 I still have a whole bunch of bait I need to get out of my freezer before my wife says something. I'm hoping to do some more crabbing if I can find some crabs.  :smt044
