DOTY Pic Examples

So...we want to be real clear that the pics submitted for DOTY should show the MOUTH CLOSED of the fish touching the end of the Hawg Trough....just think of DFG coming and checking your catch....they are gonna close that mouth and shove it against the end of that trough!

Photographic evidence of fish/abalone (total length) against a measuring device must be provided. Pictures are required to show the MOUTH CLOSED of the fish on a Hawg Trough or similar measuring board. This is in accordance with DFG measuring standards. Multiple pics can be submitted to show mouth closed and touching end of trough (if need be due to rigor mortis making squeezing mouth shut necessary). Any entries not in compliance are subject to a penalty of reduction of size or DQ of entry for flagrant and/or repeated offenses at discretion of DOTY committee. See pics provided for examples of good and bad submissions.

Bottom line....PLEASE have your pics show the mouth closed to avoid any controversy, bickering, headaches etc....I got a wife and daughters and employees to argue with at home and at work and have NO interest in arguing over here!

Now...here are some examples of "bad" pics (because the mouth is wide the heck open) and ones that are not so good and could be done better (because the mouth is not totally closed).

Remember, we are dealing with dead fish here....there is no reason not to take your time and get a good pic.

Should "cut" fish be allowed?  Seems to me like that could add some length.

Now, for abalone...

Here is the rule we came up with:

4. Abalone can be measured with ab gauge/calipers/hawgtrough and knife (see pics for examples).
Ab measurements will be rounded down to the nearest quarter inch.
For example:
8.9" ab --> entered as 8.75"
9" ab --> entered as 9"
9.1" ab --> entered as 9"
9.2" ab --> entered as 9"
9.3" ab --> entered as 9.25"
9.4" ab --> entered as 9.25"
9.5" ab --> entered as 9.5"
& so forth
Keep your PB shell.
In event of tie at end of year, shells will be calipered as a tie breaker.

If you have a 10.0 inch ab, and a 10 inch gauge and it clicks right on it and you submit the pic, sweet!

Same with an 8 inch ab and 8 inch gauge, 9 inch ab and 9 inch gauge etc.

For those abs that aren't "clickers" we need either a caliper measurement, or you can bust out the Hawg Trough and a filet knife, put the back of the shell against the end of the trough and the edge of the knife across the front of the ab...the knife will be on the trough where the ab ends and your pic should be able to show the length of the ab...remember that you should round DOWN to the nearest quarter inch.

 

Save your shell! In the event of a tie in the category, we can always get a picture of a caliper reading to break the tie.

I say yes...but mostly because I like getting the guts out of the fish while on the water.   

Also, DFG does not say that you can not gut your fish until you get back to the beach...they do say you need you to measure with the mouth closed though! 

But, I see where you're coming from and think it would be fine to save gutting the fish you want to enter pics of until after you get to the beach to take your pics.

 

I'll let Rick and fuzz chime in and am cool with whatever the consensus is.

It would probably be simpler for all to make it a no cut fish policy.

Picking on my red, I see?   

When I dive off my yak, I often gut gut the fish before heading in. I think gutting affects length a little bit, especially if the entire gill area is removed, or the collar. Filleting could, too, if you cut the spinal cord, allowing the body to partially seperate from the head, extending length.

I'm not sure what we should rule on this. Maybe make it subjective to watch for flagrant acts of it, or just not allow it from the start.

I plan on replacing that small red when I go up north to dive, anyway.

No, I think any measuring device that shows the fishies length would be fine.

I would say post it up and if fuzz don't like it he will let u know!!
