What a thrill ride today,
Got to hit the water early (for me that's 9am).
Started off trolling the moorings, then continued on to the bell. No luck and just a few short ling's. Decided to scoot up to bread and butter and see if the flatties were around. After about an hour inside, decided to move out to deeper water. Around 65 feet, there was a distinct rip going and the outside was a beautiful blue in contrast to the brown/green water on the inside. As I cross over to the blue water, I decide to drop down. All of a sudden, I hear what I can only discribe as the sound of a ski cutting the water. Turn to the right, 2 foot fin comes from the rear and away to the right at full speed. My Hart starts racing, a few seconds later same thing except on the right. Then it disappeared. I'm in "Oh S&#T" mode. I know what happens when they disappear, and I want no part of it. I make a quick turn to the left and kick the peddles as fast as I can. Out of nowhere, he makes a u-turn just to the right of my kayak. He just missed me, and as his tail kicks I can feel the wind and he throws a 10-15 foot wake over me. For a few minutes I knew I would not be here to post this. I'm sure I sounded like a scared kid when I called out on the radio, and was so glad just to hear a voice.
I've been scared by a great white a few months ago, but that time he was just cruzin and checking things out. This time, he was in full attack mode. I don't know why he turned away, but thank you Lord for watching over me today.
After the ordeal, I headed to shallower water and was content to fish for shaker halibut for a while.
Lesson learned ...... Always paddle in groups when off shore.
Life is Good in the Cove ..... On land!

Holy handgrenades batman!!! I highly recommend everyone carry 2 cherry bombs and a small flask of whiskey just for these situations. Its a matter of self-defense and survival. Welcome home brother Eric.
-
Whoa!
And you stayed out and kept fishing.
You, good sir, are a machine.
-
Good god all mighty that was a close call. Heather and I were there on Saturday and Sunday but did not launch, just camped....

Holy Shit, I woulda shit my wetsuit. I was gonna do an evening dive. not so sure about that one lol. Glad You're okay.

Oh man...so glad you are safe Eric. Im also wondering if there is something we can use to defend ourselves when they get all crazy like that. Time for someone to invent something besides the shark shield.

It happens so fast,
Don't think you have time to think, you just react and hope.

OR
time to start going out with a Harpoon and/or a 12 Gauge with slugs :smt044

Damn! Glad that you're ok. I was solo in that area the day after your event. I started to get a weird feeling at one point, so I moved. I can only try to imagine how massive a two foot dorsal must look when it's next to you while your sitting in a kayak-

They are going to have to expand the Red Triangle. Glad it worked out
-
Highly suggest that you contact Ralph Collier at the shark research committee and him on your encounter for his research and statistics

Holey sphincter pucker!!!!
I sure am glad he decided you were bad for his cholesterol ;)

I made my first launch the same day, but down in Soqual Cove. If I had your experience I would probably never have the guts to go out again. I’m so not ready for that.

Glad you had an angel co-piloting! Cherry bomb idea makes sense. Is it crazy to think a small concussion underwater would change anything?
