After about 1.5 years, had my first rudder issue on the OB yesterday. Luckily, it fell apart right before exiting the jaws at HMB.  When I turned around to see why my steering wasn't working, I saw the the drum of the rudder split in two!  Pulled out my paddle and steered myself to a beach to take a look.  I found the big bolt that holds the drum together had backed itself out.  The only reason I didn't loose any parts was due to the specctra line running through the bolt.  I'm not sure how long the bolt has been slowly working its way out, but I did noticed my steering having more tension the past couple of months.  I had my Leatherman tool, so I used the pliers and did my best to tightened the bolt with the plastic cap in place (marked it up good).  Tested it, and it worked but was worried that the line weakened from rubbing on the threads when the bolt was not in place.  I wasn't planning on going too far due to this incident, but the salmon urge was strong.  Peddled about 8+ miles without any issues.  I haven't inspected it yet at home, but depending on what I find, I may replace that line just to be safe.  Have any of you guys had this bolt issue before?  Will blue loctite be a good idea to keep that bolt from backing out?

Ryan - New one to me. My issue has been 2 broken rudder pins.  One broke when I was a mile offshore which made for a nice paddle back.

I had a similar problem only the bolt would not stay tight.  Turned out that the bolt was installed at the source cross threaded.  Needed to replace the drum.

Was the spare under the rear hatch cover already gone?

Both were original rudder pins that came from the factory.

Was it still under warranty when you realized this?

I meant could you have attempted an on the water repair using the spare pin that most (?) Hobies have under the rear hatch cover. It would obviously mean a swim, but I'm not sure how hard it would be other than that.

I've never had the drum fall apart on me before, haven't heard a lot of complaints before either.  Hope it's an easy fix!

agoohi, unfortunately no and I didn't want to waste time challenging the issue.  Minor expense.

finally got around to checking out the 14mm drum bolt.  from the looks of it, the bolt screws into the plastic drum (not sleeved), so i doubt that locktite would work.  i was able to slide the plastic cap to expose the bolt head and tightened it up and marked it.  then i backed it off and tested the rudder control.  it feels much smoother now going from full left stop to full right stop.  if the bolt is tightened all the way, the rudder control is jerky and tight.  i found the sweet spot to be about an 1/8 of a turn from full tight.  perfect.  just need to keep an eye out on it to see if it'll back out again.

just another item to inspect pre-launch.

2008 Revo still going strong. No issues. I hope I didn't just jinx things.

Thanks for sharing it. I'll go inspect those parts today and make sure nothing fishy is going on. The rudder pin is usually what gets messed up for the hobies in the back.
