My tackle life is a mess, salt tackle, fresh water tackle, time to purge and organize.  Should I organize by species or by hook and swivel and weight and lure and jig head and...and.....and.....? :smt006

Both.  Just buy all the tackle, always, never tell your wife how much you spend, and organize it in such a way that you need to go buy more tackle.

Seems to work for me.

I organize my tackle by species in waterproof tackle trays: ocean salmon, rgc, halibut/wsb, yellowtail/tuna, surf, stripped bass, river salmon, trout/crappy. So i can just grab the tackle tray i need and go.

I rarely carry more than 1 tackle tray with me on the kayak. But if you are one of those bass fishermen who like to carry everything with them, then my organizational method may not suit your needs.

Thanks guys...I am trying to go minimalist on the kayak.  I do seem to buy whatever I need whenever I need it and I'm starting to have a little check saying do you need that?  Unless I do an inventory, 10-25$ a trip can start to add up.

+1.  In addition to species specific tackle box, I carry 'mini' tackle set for another species that maybe possible in the area (i.e. quantity of one).

Ha...I had an epiphany when I threw some hooks out that seemed usable but not perfect, gave away some spinning reels that were inherited along with a heavy rod that I will not use, and it feels good.

Just 2 tackle boxes for me:  1 for salt water & 1 for fresh water.  But fishing rods, reeks, lures, etc...are everywhere in my car garage!

Did this not too long ago and I agree. Sold a few things, gave a bunch of older stuff (mostly inherited) away,  and it was very cathartic. Highly recommended, and then it frees up space to go buy more. :smt044

I went through this recently and sorted by type in 360 boxes.  Crankbaits in one, plastics in another, terminal tackle in another, miscellaneous lures in another (4 boxes total).  I keep my flies separate from all of this.  if I cant fit it all in one box for each then I leave the "leftovers" at home.  I found that I can make this work for just about anything.  I don't get out to the ocean much at all but I do have box ready to go.

I use the Plano 3600 softsider on the boat. It holds 3 of the tackle organizer boxes. I have 9 of them 3 for salmon, 3 for ocean fishing, 3 for lake fishing. All 3 sets have fuses for FF battery. Now for my main storage I have 3 large Plano’s and 3 dedicated cubbirds as well as 2 drawers.

Mr. Tote...that, my friend, is exactly what I needed to see.  I will commence in this style of mental excercise and action.  It is a fishing library.  If I ever open one I'll need a curator.  Thanks for the links, 9 years ago and going strong?
