Wanted To Buy / Re: Want to buy a kayak trailer
« on: March 16, 2024, 10:43:27 AM »
I don't have one to sell, but I'm a fan of my Trailex. But, I think the ultimate would be the (very expensive) Yakima Rack and Roll. Speaking of which, this one on Craigslist looks too good to be true--and it probably is, as I've tried contacting the poster several times, and have not gotten any response.:

Introductions / Re: Happy To Be Here

Sporty conditions!

They are out of stock at west coast sailing, eBay, and every dealer I have called coast-to-coast. The “ships in 3-6 weeks” on west coast sailings site is just a way of saying “we can get one when Hobie has them again.” CCK told me per the Hobie shortage list updated 2/27 they were “researching “

Since I make my own solid crank arms, and I have multiple mirage drives, I've got a few spare stock crank arms. Here's a right-side one. You could borrow it--no hurry to get it back, as I'll never use it again.

Some have made custom crank arms out of aluminum billet stock -- I think Nowhereman did this. It might be quicker than waiting on the parts to come into stock. Good luck!

Cheers,
Brad

Yes! I've made a lot of them of out of solid 3/4" square 6061 aluminum--a strange hobby of mine....

They've proven indestructible for me. The only issue is that you'd probably need to use bicycle pedals, as there is not an easy way to directly attach the Hobie pedals.

AOTY / Re: Legal method of measure for AOTY?
« on: March 12, 2024, 07:39:11 PM »
I’m just glad it’s not on the upper part of the leg  :smt044
Or the "third leg".

Maybe he saves that for the really big ones...

For Sale / Re: FS Eddyline Caribbean 14 $800

I think that is the one that Sonny bought from me. It’s a great boat, and that’s a good price—if I had space to store it, I’d buy it!

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Rudder steering line broke

I used 2.5mm amsteel, which is braided dyneema (same as spectra):

It's held up well on my AI...

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Well. My 2022 Outback Hull cracked.
« on: March 02, 2024, 07:38:41 PM »
Makes me glad I didn’t spring for a Hobie yet. They’re a great company but this shows even they can have their problems

I'm curious whether Hobie is having more, less, or the same number of problems as they've had in the past. The Hobie forum used to be extremely active, with people from Hobie constantly monitoring and interacting with customers. Then it was easy to see when any problems popped up. Unfortunately, the new ownership has de-emphasized the Hobie forum--it's pretty much dead now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually pull the plug on it.

AOTY / Re: Electric motors are now allowed for AOTY.
« on: March 02, 2024, 07:28:12 PM »
By proxy would Sail Power also be allowed in the standard entry?

When submitting an entry, it still asks whether it was caught on a "sail kayak", so it looks like the sail division remains separate. IMHO, it would make more sense to have a combined sail/motor division, separate from a strictly human-powered yaks division.

Launched Bo four times and 4 yardsales on landing.....

This makes me feel better. I've been there 2x and crashed 2x (once on launch, just as I was passing a surfer, and once when landing).

General Talk / Re: Like to see this puppy on the Ocean

Interesting design.  Wonder what are the dimensions and hull weight?

In the video, he says it's 48 inches wide.

The pedal/paddle is kind of interesting, but it looks like you'd have a lot more power going backwards rather than forwards...

General Fishing Tips / Any fish in Almaden Reservoir?
« on: February 27, 2024, 05:50:59 PM »
Anybody here ever fish in Almaden Reservoir (not to be confused with Almaden Lake, which is nearby)? Unfortunately, kayaks are not allowed, but it looks like it would be reasonably fishable from shore. I always see people fishing Almaden Lake, but I was at Almaden Reservoir yesterday and there was nobody.
