Not fishing related, but important. If you plan to apply for Santa Cruz building permits, please beware of Santa Cruz County's incompetence.

I (Matt) am a hydrographer with the U.S Geological Survey at the Wrigley Building on Santa Cruz’s West Side. My wife Chelsey is a Registered Nurse at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz. We purchased our 3-bedroom 2-bathroom home in Aptos in April of 2016, where we currently reside with our 2-year-old daughter Isla. During escrow, a septic inspection revealed that the septic tank needed to be replaced. Contingent upon our purchase of this home, an agreement was reached with the seller which guaranteed that the seller would replace the septic system legal, up to code, and permitted by Santa Cruz County. The seller agreed and hired a licensed septic construction company to install a brand new “conventional” septic tank. Santa Cruz County Environmental Health department (EHS) authorized and inspected that work and issued the permit. The system is currently functioning normally.

In February of 2020 a large Douglas-fir tree fell onto our home, destroying the outdoor deck and uninsulated modular “sun-room”. We applied for Santa Cruz County permits to repair the deck and to replace the sunroom with solid insulated walls. While reviewing these plans, EHS decided they issued the 2016 permit in error, and are now unwilling to issue ANY permits unless we first agree to replace our 2016 septic tank with an Enhanced Treatment System. This is the same septic system EHS inspected, approved, and permitted in 2016. They are essentially rescinding their previously approved permit, and holding our repairs hostage until we fix their mistakes.  I don't understand how this is legal, or moral. The replacement system will cost over $70K-which is more than my insurance payout to fix my house, and the current system works perfectly.  This is putting my family into a dire financial situation from which we may not be able to recover.

My family is getting screwed over by the county to the tune of $70K (which is more than our insurance adjustment to repair our home).  We are now taking a home equity loan just to replace the (functioning) septic system in order to get the permits to repair our home. Since  February of 2020, we have lived with an active toddler and a shattered and dangerous deck and a leaky moldy dining room because the county is holding our repairs hostage to a retrospective septic upgrade they should have mandated in 2016 when they approved the existing system.   I believe the people of Santa Cruz have a right to know how the county does business.

My wife and I have some spare time this summer and are considering visiting friends in San Diego. Of coarse, with my one track fishing mind, Ill be bringing my kayak and gear. I would appreciate some advise about where to launch, where to fish, and what to target.
Also, as it will be my birthday, I've been given the greenlight to schedule a charter.  Id love to hear your thoughts/advise if you have local knowledge.

I have two Creek Company ODC 816 Pontoon Boats for sale. One has been used once, the other has never been used. Also have 2 sets of Force Fins for sale. Willing to sell everything separately or together. If you are interested in any combination of these items make me an offer.

My wife and daughter and I are planning on arriving Tuesday mid day at Ocean Cove. If we can secure a campsite, we can stay as late as Saturday.  Ill have my kayak and gear with me and plan to get at least a couple morning sessions in.  I do not know the area and have never launched there before. My Shark Shield just died after 6 seasons of regular use, and their inventory is currently backlogged a couple months. It would be great to have some company with some local knowledge. So, anybody planning on fishing this week?  The forecast is looking good. Im game for salmon trolling or bottom fishing.   :smt006

General Talk / King Tide 01/10
« on: January 11, 2020, 04:43:07 PM »
Headed out to Davenport Landing to check out the -1.2ft low tide.  Parking lot was pretty full so I had to search around a bit.  By total coincidence I saw PISCEAN's truck paralleled parked.  I should have figured he would be here too :smt044.  I was just walking to the beach to go surprise him when I spotted Mrs PISCEAN also searching for parking.  Impromptu tide pool party!!!  Had so much more fun exploring the eel grass and muscle beds with good friends.  There is another King Tide forecast for Feb 8 and 9.  If the weather is good, I highly recommend you go to your nearest rocky beach and go check it out. Great activity for children too. Next time Id like to harvest some muscles.   Here are a few pics from the evening.

For Sale / 92 Toyota 4x4 V6 $3500.
« on: March 23, 2019, 11:18:29 PM »
1992 Toyota Pick Up. 170K miles. V6 3.0 EFI.

It is with no joy I announce the sale of my trusty old Yota.  Originally a gift from my mother in 2010, it had only 130K miles. As my primarily recreational vehicle, I have logged only 40K miles on it.  We've been up and down the the entire cost HWY; From Santa Cruz to San Diego for the 2014 Islander trip to SCI, to Golds Beach OR for my own Norcal Coastal adventure in 2016. It has traversed Usal road in 4 low on the Lost Coast, and snowy roads in Tahoe on 4 high. Most of all though, this truck has shuttled bountiful loads of rockfish, halibut, and a few salmon and seabass between my local beach launches and home. I have cleaned many fine fish, and shared a good many celebratory beers with PISCEAN on her tailgate.

Now for facts. It has significant rust around the windshield and does leak during rain. Fortunately the drips land on the passenger side floor mat, and do not wet the seats. It also has a timing issue which results in slight engine misfire; particularly in 1st gear at low RPM. It powers through with a bit of extra gas peddle. Once she is rolling, she drives like normal. Registration and smog is due in July, so I took the initiative to bring it in for a preliminary smog test. It passed, though the timing issue came up.  Id me happy to share the results with any interested parties.

With the exception of the aforementioned issues, the truck is solid. The body is clean (except for windshield rust), and the engine is strong (except for misfire issue). I replaced the clutch at about 150K, and diligently changed oil. Feel free to ask any additional questions.

My buddy has an 18 foot Robalo from which we regularly fish the Santa Cruz area.  After spending the day fishing off Pleasure Point with his young son and his friend, we decided to go check out the rookery.  It did not take long to find the sharks.  Perhaps they found us...  We had three sharks in our field of view at one time, then saw a fourth one past them.  I can say definitively that there were at least 4 individuals; but probably more.  They were incredibility placid, and even curious. They would come out of there way to look at us.  A very cool experience which I recommend you try; from a PB. 10 to 20 feet of water between the Capitola pier and the ship. Most were nearer to the pier.

« on: April 23, 2018, 03:29:26 PM »
My wife and I will be vacationing in Bar Harbor Maine next month. I was wondering if anybody had any experience or information regarding saltwater fishing in this area. Our rental cottage has very convenient water access (http://www.edgewaterbarharbor.com/index.html).  I have found kayak rentals and am considering bringing some fishing gear.   :smt006

For Sale / Leaky 150 Gal aquarium For Sale
« on: March 19, 2018, 01:55:34 PM »
I got this tank from Petsmart in Sept of 2016.  last week it developed a small leak in the bottom corner and dropped about 30 gallons before I got home and noticed. Petsmart wont work with me at all since it was more than 1 year ago.  Sucks, but now it will make a great "dry tank".  It has no major scratches or blemishes and has nice glasstops, stand, background, and lights.  Im hoping to get $200 for it. It cost alot more than that new (and holding water)  :smt012

« on: January 03, 2017, 11:56:26 PM »
During the 2016 season I caught a surprise CA barracuda from a buddy's boat.  I shared the pic with friends and on social media. Then last week I was surprised once again, when I was presented with a PISCEAN original burned and etched wood plank depicting the actual photo of the cuda.  Thanks Sean, you are true friend and a talented artist!!!
