Looks like a remake of the "Fly-O" that the Lee and Joan Wulff made popular. A short rod tip section with some fat yarn on it. It is a good training aid if you don't have room outside.
There's no better practice than going fishing though. Learning to cast Salmon flies weak handed , backwards, or across your body in a good breeze has to be done to be learned by doing. Close calls, getting hooked, and snapping hook points off on rocks are all part of the art.(confessed fishing geek)

And wind knots like you can't even imagine.
The most important thing is to wait for the rod to load before making your next move. The weight of the line going forward or backwards will create a bend in the rod as it straightens out. This bend is the 'loading' part. It will help propel the line with your next cast.
The best book out there IMO on the sport is "The Curtis Creek Manifesto".
Looks like a coloring book with cartoon-like pics but the info is direct and to the point.
A must read for anyone who enjoys flyfishing.

good points tote! I constantly have to slow my casting down. Moreso when fishing any type of wet fly or nymph rig.  What really helps me is when I fish my Winston IM6 3wt which is a slower action rod which makes me slow down or I end up casting a "rat's nest."
I gotta have more cowbell

Thanks for the advice Tote. I picked up this book over the weekend and it's awesome. I was thinking to just give it a read in the bookstore and not buy it but after the first few pages I realized this is a book that will be on your shelf and you'll go back to it time and again. I really appreciate how it's written so straight and to the point w/o needless text.

While reading though you do get this strange urge to color it...  :toothy10:

You can always practice casting on a lawn which will be OK on your line wear.
