Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Connecting shark shield to FF battery...
« on: August 28, 2021, 01:35:47 PM »
So did it work?

My concern was that the charging electrodes might be wired into a charge-only circuit that disconnects normal ss function.

I suspect that the manufacturer says it cannot be rebuilt because the devices are made to be waterproof down to 100m or something like that. For our purposes, the ss won’t experience those water pressures while sitting in our boats, so I would bet you can just replace the battery and not dive with it — good to go. [emoji1360][emoji1360]

« on: July 12, 2021, 08:21:35 PM »
Hey everybody, Gelly rocks! He has the NCKA creds down pat, for sure.

He has been kayak fishing for years and is a bona fide AR fly fisherman. He hails from Sac Town, and routinely hauls in big river chromes. We are serious AI bro’s and Gelly is a total prodigy  :smt045 :smt045  I super appreciate that Gelly does not back down from any challenge and he does his homework, so he goes into those situations already schooled.

I will go into any situation with him anytime, anywhere — and we will catch fish!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Scotty Trap Ease
« on: January 19, 2021, 09:15:55 AM »
2 things:  I'm not sure if I'm reading this correctly, but mentioned  you crabbed in "the bay."  FYI, the SF Bay is off limits for crab.  Second thing, the Trap Ease is very helpful for me, as I have had 2 shoulder surgeries, and the device spares me the lifting motion by replacing it with a horizontal pulling motion.

Glad you survived this.  It is a wake up call for all of us.

I got these for Christmas from my Budget Director

https://www.watersportsoutlet.com/2020-nookie-pro-bib-double-waist-dry-trousers-charcoal-grey-tr12-p-21557.html

They are fantastic.  I have a paddle jacket I wear on top when the conditions demand it, but any waterproof jacket will do well since the very close neoprene fit around the chest works to keep most of the water out if one is really immersed.  I also have a fantastic drysuit I purchased from these guys several years ago; it needs servicing now and I need to lose weight, as I cannot get it on anymore.  Their prices are consistently much lower than equivalent US suits, they provide free shipping, which typically arrives in 3 days to the Bay Area.

Fitting:  This became a problem for me.  I'm an athlete, so my hips are wider than my waist.  Their sizing is for the waist, which is what I dutifully measured, so be sure to measure your hips and waist and use the larger dimension of those 2 when ordering.

Many people note that the drysuits can be hot in warmer temps.  This is true, BUT is easily corrected by either splashing oneself with water or by dangling one's legs in the water or even jumping into the water. BTW, I have worn wetsuits for diving, paddling, windsurfing, and surfing and can confirm that they are even hotter when it's warm out, and seriously less comfortable in general terms. when  It is far easier to cool off than to warm up after getting wet.

WooHoo! This is awesome!

I have been dreaming about this... after some serious schlepping and hoisting off my Revo-16. I’m really looking forward to the final build pix and the use reports. 👍🏼👍🏼

Fish Talk / Lifecycle of the Cali Hali?
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:57:25 PM »
Hey, this is kind of funny:  Last week, the only Hali I caught at ARW was all of about 9” long and TLA recently caught one that fit in the palm of his hand. This got me thinking (it’s that time of year when I think, whether it’s needed or not [emoji23]) about the ages of those 2 small fries.

Can anyone fill us in on the Cali Hali lifecycle? Because the suckers were so small, it seems very unlikely that they hatched anywhere other than right near ARW. In the Bay, what’s their spawning pattern and early life like?

thanks in advance,  Bradley

General Talk / ARW Encinal Boat Ramp: CLOSED 4/22/2020
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:41:38 PM »
Well, sad news: the new and nicely done City of Alameda Encinal Boat Ramp is closed effective this afternoon, as per the City’s official website.

I stopped by after my nearby Food Bank volunteer shift in order to check up my local spot, and was just in time to see 2 city workers bolting up a brand new “No Trespassing” sign on the gates.  They offered no info, so I checked the website and learned the news. On my way back to the ramp, the entire parking lot was filled and there were cars parked well along the driveway, with many PB’s out on the water, a decent crop of yakkers, and a good number of wall fishermen.

While I was there, most people seemed to be observing the social distancing guidelines, but the PB’s are going to be questionable, as is the wall.  This is quite a bummer, as Hali season seems to be improving.

Below is the link that announces the decision to delay the meeting until next week.  The announcement also clarifies that this meeting was not to ban fishing Statewide but to provide a means to work with specific counties and tribes that have requested restrictions.

https://cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2020/04/09/california-fish-and-game-commission-emergency-meeting-will-be-rescheduled-for-next-week/

If you looked at the meeting documents, there were several scenarios outlined in them including a statewide closure.  I do not trust that the reassurance that this is only certain counties and tribes is accurate.  I mean, I'm like 85% sure that we were only looking at postponing the sierra trout opener, but that other 15% of me doesn't trust the commission to limit it to just that.

I was on the call this morning.  It was completely horrible, and it really wouldn't have surprised me for the commissioners to kick it over to the governor for an emergency closure state wide out of pure spite.  People behaved very, very poorly and I can't believe that many of them function in society, or even go outside without helmets and neck cones to keep them from eating all the paint chips.

Crash, thank you for this. 😂😂 I had the same reaction, although your colorful descriptions are more vivid and creative than mine, but nonetheless it was shocking just how low the bar is set for some of our fellow citizens. Thank goodness our forum members understand and accept that we (NCKA) may have different viewpoints but are good at being respectful of each other. If any of us weigh in with the State on this meeting, I am confident that we will present a measured and considered representation of why NCKA is such a great group.

Hey gang, I learned of this from my buddy Nick.  Please see the link below, RE an emergency CDFW meeting that is discussing the potential shutdown of the sport fishing season due to Covid-19 concerns.

Most of us certainly have the time to participate in this virtual meeting:

When:            Thursday, April 9, 2020 at 8:30 a.m.

Where:          Via teleconference and webinar. Members of the public will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed emergency regulation by calling (877) 402-9753 or (636) 651-3141; access code 832 4310. Webinar details are on the agenda.

More:             The meeting agenda and documents are available on the Commission’s website at https://fgc.ca.gov/Meetings/2020

Personally, this is kind of baffling to me, because almost as a rule, fisherman may be friendly and social creatures, but we are not keen on being within 3 or 4 yards of anyone, other than our kids, when we’re fishing.  If we understand that we MUST maintain social distancing or the season could be forfeited, then it seems like a bad idea to remove a means of putting food on the table, which thereby takes pressure off of other food supply chains.

So here’s the larger point, we are a very large organization and there is no time like now to express our views with the authorities who are considering changes to how we recreate and feed ourselves.  Please participate in the call-in.

General Talk / Re: List of fishing sites that are open and closed.

East Bay Regional Park District closures:  https://www.ebparks.org/news/park_n_trail_closures.htm

Yesterday I spoke with an EBRPD ranger and he said that many of the parks are available via walk-in access. Happily, this includes Big Break except for its visitor center, the new and very nice windsurfing/kayak launch ramp at PT. Isabel, and Alameda Beach access to name a few East Bay sites.

Generally, walk in access seems to be the order of the day, BUT our local Emergency Response and Communication Center (Alameda) yesterday issued a communique that basically stated that starting next week the police will begin surveilling known locations and groups of people who are violating the State SIP order. Their intended purpose is to “inform and educate” people about the situation, and later they will enforce as needed. This seems to be part of a larger, weekly stepwise rollout of the restrictions intended to get us gradually under control. The communique also spoke to tightening things up on what are considered “essential activities” and travel. This is pretty aligned with the gist of the Santa Cruz Harbormaster’s closure statement.

As a result of that communique, I’m uncertain if my 16’ long mango colored rooftop kayak missile will cause me an unwanted chit chat with the popo... 😬

Oh yeah, I’m all in!  Welcome to the Isle of Style 🤣🤣!

Hobie Kayaks / Re: AI/TI questions
« on: November 23, 2019, 06:27:03 PM »
Do you have a link to that? I've rigged a DIY mesh bag that hangs off the back of the seat on my AI. I mostly use it to carry food and other stuff that I want to keep out of the fish goo. I'm thinking that the official Hobie version might be a nice upgrade...

Here you go NowhereMan:

https://westcoastsailing.net/hobie-vantage-seat-accessory-bag/

Looks nice, and a reasonable price, by Hobie standards. But, I can't tell from the picture how it attaches to the seat. I've got the old fashioned (pre-vantage) seat, modified somewhat (of course...), so I think it'll work, but would like to be sure...
(I bought one for my wife)  It has 4 vertically oriented straps that are positioned for the top and middle plastic ribs on the CT seats.

This is a tough call. In truth, I can get most things, like my lunch, down the hatch under my legs, but she asked for something like this and is now having 2nd thoughts. On the other hand, there is so very little convenient storage on a Hobie kayak, especially the Revo’s, especially when we’re fishing.

oh, when sailing can't use the plano box rod holders. the molded in ones work when sail is deployed... barely (just make sure no hooks catch the sail).

For the trunk area - it's much smaller on TI vs AI. Plano box did not work for me, I managed to fit milk crate, but then opted for a soft-sided no-zipper cooler with plastic insert, which I use for tackle.

Hobie makes a cool looking pack that hands off the seat backs.
