Funny, I just came across the business card for this place and logged on to post the info... you beat me to it.

I now affectionately refer to this place as Sgt. Samich.  Great place primo.

When you go either
1) Order a sandwich for two people
2) Plan on having half of it for lunch and the other for dinner
3) Have one hell of an appetite

I'm with the RH on that. Great food and the ambiance worthy of a Kayaker.

For Santa Cruz, gotta be the Santa Cruz Diner!  That place has a great variety of food, open 24hrs, and food is delicious!

For Capitola, gotta be Margaritaville for me!  Great food, good drinks, and boy oh boy the ladies are fine!  Also on the cheaper side of things compared to the rest of them there by the wharf.

For Stillwater Cove, Carmel I hear the BBQ is great there if FishMaster1 is there  :smt044  But if he doesn't show up with his 3 bbq's and a pile of food, I head over to Castroville for Central Texan BBQ.  That place is off the hook with their brisket, beans, etc!  Could barely drive home afterwards!

Al,

I agree with Santa Cruz Diner, awesome food, even their pho is good.

Central Texas BBQ is the best. My wife works next door at the Girl Scout Office, so she brings home takeout often.

Don Elkins owns it and I was talking with him a couple weeks ago. People are just not eatiing BBQ like they used to, so he's worried about keeping the restaurant opened.

If anybody is traveling south on 1, take 183  into Castroville and buy some BBQ from Don. His shops on the right side in town..

Hi Yakers:

I  do Kipper Skacks and Beers on the Bench by Bayside Marine. :smt005
I have also been to "The Crows Nest" south of Bayside Marine for Ahi and Salad bar which was good for the price and a great view.

I haven't tried their Pho? yet, because I am so picky about it  :smt003  In '01 a co-worker of mine introduced me to Pho, and being Vietnamese he took me under his wing to teach me all about good to great Pho.  My very favorite is a recipe he gave me which I make at home with Ox tails (yummm).  Have it around 2-3 times per week, and have at least twice had it 5 days in a row for lunch.

So, how does one distinguish between good and great Pho?

Kind of like on the cooking shows where they say something like '... be sure to use a good quality olive oil".  What exactly does that mean?

Well...  Depends on the business, they all make it differently for starters.  Some are also a little uncouth with their daily practices, so they do things like water down the broth to stretch it a bit further on busy days (or when they see whiteys like me).  Others just don't have a great taste to start off with, usually a bit bland.

One thing you can always do to spice it up a bit is ask for them to bring you some of the oil from the pot as flavoring.  I cant spell it, but its pronounced something like Nuck Mao (nuch bao?)?  Its usually brought over with green onions in a bowl, add a scoop of it to your soup.

The recipe is very simple, but requires a seasoning packet that my co-worker gets from his Mom :)  But basics of it are ox tails, shank, roasted white or yellow onion, roasted ginger, and the seasoning packet he gives me with anise, clove, and what ever else is in there.  Season it with chicken stock/broth and fish sauce.  Toss in some rice noodles, thin sliced beef, green onions, sprouts, and a ton of Siracha.  Yum....

If anyone is in Mountain View and wants to try my favorite place, for consistency, service and flavor, its Pho Vi Hoa on the Los Altos side of El Camino, kiddie corner to San Antonio shopping center.

Cheers :)

Don's Dogs  in Rio Nido  A real must after a long day of rockfishing on the Sonoma Coast. Great dogs with all the fix'ns including my downfall......creme fresh and sauerkraut. Top it off with an ice coffee and ice cream....all the calories you burned fishing went for nada.

Some places have really salty broth that's usually a giveaway of the lesser quality places.  Just look for lots of Vietnamese people...  The good places are always packed at lunchtime.

Pho is one of my favorites, too.  I eat it at least once a week, mandatory.  Rare beef medallions....  mmmm!

Had to show some love for C-lakes richmond park b&g.
Not only good food and one of the best places to catch NFL games on earth but a haunt for many crafty bassers that gather to share reports/pictures and of course a tasty brew.
