:smt005 Not close to being a native at all. I migrated to the Bay Area in 1986. And before that, I was in LA (Santa Monica) for a year.

Smell A, baby!  haha.  my hometown.

Do the walk man...its worth it, and while you're at it go get an irish coffee at the BV

Be prepared for the noise though.  The cars be loud as hell, but it's still a fun trek.

excellent paddle  Mooch & Shicken! You guys had a stellar day to do it, from the pics.

I did the "tide ride" under the GG a couple of times, back in the 90's. Always a sense of achievement & awe to look up at the underside of that red baby.

In this economy during the silly season, i'd be scared to look up.  Might see a skydiver ... :smt011

Wanted to paddle to the Marin side and back but there was a train of HE-UGE tankers /container ships making their way inside the Bay. I can't imagine the wake made by these behemoths :smt118

My former co-worker at Aquan Sports, Zsolt Szadovszki (one of the Top surf ski jocks) used to hang out under the gate with his ski and surf the wake made from the big tankers  :worship :worship :worship :worship :worship

My fav part in "step into liquid" (the surf film) was the longboard guys in Texas, surfing 3' tanker wakes for miles & miles. One guy eats a sandwich while hanging 5!

Wake surfing on a 'ski under the GG = cajones indeed

Nice!  Did that a few years ago with an NCKA crew from the Marin side (pic in my avatar is near Bonita Cove).  What was the tide doing, and how was the crabbin (i.e. is that the only one you got?!).

I've always wanted to paddle the length of the San Mateo Bridge....anyone up for it?

I'm up for it.

Would have to be a Saturday or Sunday for me.

The tide was slack. The crabbin was OK.

Mooch,

How did you decide that it will be a good day out to paddle the GG?
Appreciate the inputs for future planning.

Thanks for the pix. Nice background shots.

Hit ka sa Pinas niyan.

Going Fishing?
Winds from the south, hook in
    the mouth.
Wind from the east, bite the least.
Wind from the north, further off.
Wind from the west, bite the
    best.

Kamusta na Danny,

Actually Marv called the shot to paddle under the gate. Not sure what tide / chart website he used to figure out the best time to paddle. Definitely plan the tide accordingly - the current under the gate is no joke. Also keep an eye on the surf that breaks nearshore AND the wakes from the cargo ships. Lot's of stuff to consider out there - Be safe if you go out.

Kuya,
Joel

Check the tide chart, look at the times of the peak high and lows, check the height and time differences.  Smaller change in tide heights will result in lower currents.  There are tide and current charts online.  Current charts will display time of peak currents, and slack.
