Bair Island, Port of Redwood City - June 1, 2009
http://www.trails.com/tcatalog_trail.aspx?trailid=CGS042-020

Mission:  To Circumnavigate Bair Island on a Stand-up-Paddle board

Cast of Characters:

Frank from Stockton - a veteran SUP racer and long time surfer

Gary from San Mateo - veteran SUP and veteran surfer

Joel from HMB - newbie SUP dude

The 3 of us launched from the Port of RedWood City at 7:30 AM and paddled against the wind for two miles :smt011. Then at mile 5, we were out in the Bay just South of the San Mateo Bridge. We were hoping to paddle with the wind behind our back but the wind was NOT there :smt013 So we continued our course towards the mouth of the RWC Harbor (we could clearly see the Dumbarton Bridge) and bumped into a big freighter that was being towed out by a tug boat. Frank paddled towards the ship in hopes of catching some surf but the ship wasn't going fast enough to generate some surf-able waves :smt011 No joy for Frank so we paddled on to mile 8 and started making our way into the Harbor mouth. Not only did the wind go against us (again) but we also had the tide moving out :smt009 The last mile in was the   toughest I've ever done PHYSICALLY  :smt104 Frank was a charger was setting a good and steady pace and I was struggling about 50 yards behind him. Gary was about a quarter mile behind and opted for a more casual pace.

By 11:00AM = mile 10, Frank got his feet dry and I followed about 10 min. behind him and Gary closed the gap by 11:30.

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!! :headbang:

pics...

Frank leading the charge. We were paddling right next to the San Carlos Airport at this point....(see da planes on the background?)

You need to mount A scotty rod holder in the back of that thing and at least do some trolling. Looks like it would be to boring for me. :smt005.... JMHO. :smt044

June issue of Canoe & kayak mag has SUP tips by Laird Hamilton & a circumnav of St John in the Caribbean by an SUP dude.

WTG on the stamina Mooch. I'm thinking 240# is a number of the past.

SUP'ing is easy to learn but it can also be the hardest thing to paddle - especially against the wind and with some wind chop to go with it. You definitely get a FULL BODY WORK OUT from it  :smt045  AND it sure beats going to a gym  :smt002

Mooch forgive me if i've missed this info in a previous post but have you had your board out catching and riding waves out on the coast? I saw a SUP surfer out at Lindamar beach yesterday as I drove back up north from Monterey and was wondering if it was you?

negatory on that....I don't plan on surfing a SUP anytime soon. Right now, I'm all about paddling the distance and enjoying the view as I go :smt002

Was the SUP surfer on an orange and black board? I see that dude all over the place.

Yeah, I think it may have been orange/black. This would be a good time of the year to begin waveriding. Saturday was so mellow I surfed Gazos Creek. Glassy 3ft A-frame. Fun.
