I was doing SF Bay dawn foot patrol in 415 land, practicing more Superspook walking. I stuck a 25"er, and stupidly tried to release him with my bare hands. One flop, and I had 2 points of a #2 Gama in the base of my thumb up to the bend(the other end of the Spook is still attached to the enraged striper, naturally). I immediately knelt on top of the fish to try to immobilize it, but every tiny wriggle made me want to puke.

Lucky for me, I  debarb all my hooks, I don't trust myself with barbs in a kayak. Still, because of the twisting and thrashing, I couldn't get myself free until I conked the fish, and even then I had to use pliers to back it out.

This would have been 10x worse if I'd been offshore in a kayak.

I went to Kaiser soaking wet from the waist down, splatted with blood and scales, they gave me a tetanus shot and a week of Cipro.

I feel stupid as heck, I got complacent from years of fishing single-hook lures.

x2.  If others can take pics when they take a swim surely you can take a pic when you're hooked  :smt044

I know how you feel.  I hooked myself while making up a new leader and tied up a hook while on a kayak last summer.  Didn't stop me from fishing that day though  :smt003 I went to the hospital to have the hook removed (this one has barb!) after got back home and changed clothes.

Three cheers for barbless trebles.

Jump right back on the saddle and get those stripers with the Spook.  Ain't much better fishing than walking the dog.

Sorry guys, no camera until I got home. After the gore was washed off, the holes were disappointingly small, anyway. No sympathy or gruesome value.

If you don't make it can i have that lure?

Sure, I'll give you a call when I'm dead! But apart from turning black and blue, my thumb seems be recovering.

BTW, any suggestions on doing C/R on stripers that have engulfed multiple sets of trebles? From a kayak? I've given serious thought to disabling all but one point (ala Gene Kira in "Baja Catch").

Good call on going barbless!  Glad to hear it wasn't any worse.

If the lure can be trued with singles, switch out the trebles to avoid all the hassle & mangling the fish. Otherwise, try using cheap hooks & bring wire cutters to cut the hooks off...

I made my ER visit when I was 14, treble to the left thumb.  Novacain and and a pair of pliers and the doc had it out.  I have learned since then.

I have had the pleasure of removing barbed trebles from my leg and my finger.  It is the weirdest thing, but some kind of instinctive reaction makes it very hard to do it yourself, but it can be done.  Just look away, and yank.  The old loop of line trick works every time. . .  The last time I did it, the hook was in my leg thanks to a good sized brownie that was head shaking in my canoe.  The only line I had was four pound test, and I had to make multiple loops of it to keep it from breaking.  Three hard tries later, the hook finally pops out.  The most amazing thing about it, and this was already mentioned by the original poster, the holes that are left behind are tiny. Even with a decent sized hook and a pronounced bard, the hole that is left behind is pretty insubstantial.

Boga Grip is the only way. Those fish are too strong and too likely to jump into the kayak with those hooks flying around for me. A quick click of the Boga Grip and they are pretty immobilized.

When looking at the dynamite fishing video from Darius, this one popped up after it finished playing:

OUCH!!!!

Mike, glad your ok and thanks for that story.  I've told a few friends at work, they all have some hook in body story to share.  :smt009 I've never had it sink past the barb, but have noticed I'm pretty much used to getting poked all the time while fishing.
