Hey Aaron,

Greg has done a fabulous job getting the event to where it is today. I am glad to see you are taking the reigns and organizing this years TRW4.  I may have overlooked it on the PacOut site, but what is the charity for the event?

Thanks, Brandi

Great question Brandi. We actually spent some time on this matter. The last three tournaments we've split our proceeds with various charities. This is an awesome tournament, because of where it's located and I see a lot of potential for growth with this tournament. Everyone that comes over for the tournament loves the area and fishing grounds. The first year we had almost 25 teams. The second year we had 20 teams. The third year we had around 15 teams. I see the potential of having 50 teams. We were brainstorming ways to give this tournament a bigger draw, so we could tap into it's potential. After long thought, we've decided that offering more prizes to more people and/or bigger prize packages would be more enticing. In order to do that, we need to apply all the money brought in to the prizes, including the prizes that get donated. So for that reason we don't have a charity this year. However, if we wanted to offer some "side bets" like Barbie Pole Challenge, we could have people "buy in" to that and that money could go to a charity. I love the idea of the charity, once we really tap into the potential of this tournament; I can see bringing back in, as part of the entry fee. But the prizes cost money and we need to be able to pay for them. Hope that clarifies things for you and I am open to suggestions.

Thanks Brandi.

Well said, Aaron.  Cool that you brought it up, Brandi.  I respect the amount of time and energy that Aaron and the team have put into TRW over the past few years of building the tournament up and hope that we can hit that 50 team goal.

Count The aMayesing Brothers in on this one!  We faired poorly last year, but I'm blaming that on the crappy ocean conditions barring us from my favorite T-Dad reefs  :smt005.

Looks like I'll need to carry a pocket calculator OTW for the point system  :smt044.  At first glance, it looks as if a mess of decent-sized china rockfish could take the gold.  I'm cool with that  :smt004.  Species-specific tactics for the win!

With the way the points are laid out, Tony and I should have no problem getting 4 30"+ lings, a good cabezone, and a big china.  Hopefully I get some time fishing halibut and find them closer cause 300+pt halibut will be easy for me.  This will be fun if the weather cooperates :smt003

17 early entries right now. 23 more by 7/01. The reason is he is three months out, as far as production goes and if we get 40 people by then, I know we can pay for the rods. They are going to be beautiful rods!

Come on guys and gals and sign up.  This is a great tournament in a really beautiful location.  No matter your experience you can find a comfortable spot to fish.  You have a protected area with lots of fish and then you have the wide open sea if you like that type of fishing.  Even my brother can catch a fish here...

It would be nice to know what type of rod its going to be.  Sato does some nice rods, but is it going to be like any of the pictures you posted this time.  I heard nothing but complaints about the ones given away at the last Rockfish Wars.

+1

I won a Sato rod at TRW two years ago, and it is nothing like the Sato Rods that Brent sells/advertises. I have given my Sato numerous chances with a wide variety of baits, and have hated it every time. An Ugly Stick Tiger Lite WAY out-performs my Sato rod. It will gather dust in my garage until Linda makes me throw it out.

The problem isn't the workmanship which was quality(but nothing like the above photographs).  The problem is that the rod is made of mismatched components on an cut and re-purposed blank .  I e-mailed Brent (Sato owner) to ask what the deal was, and he told me that Pacific Outfitters had asked him to build the rods with "whatever spare parts he had lying around".  The result: a polished turd with a vague resemblance to Frankenstein's monster.

Trust me, you don't want these rods. RacinRob also has a TRW Sato.  I don't want to speak for him, but I have never seen it taken out of his garage.

I may be looking for a partner to team up.  I have 1 prospect but unsure at this point.

I'll be coming over from Redding and have never fished Trinidad from a kayak.  Lots of time from a PB though.

I have limited experience but I'm no dummy either so it won't be a babysitting trip  :smt002

I'm sorry you guys felt that way about the rods. Last years rods were last minute (they showed up the day before the tournament) and our budget for the rods was about 1/2 what it is for this tourament. We all know Sato make some great rods, that's why I asked him to make some for our tournament. This is the first I've heard of this. I really appricate the feedback. This years rods will be much nicer. If we do it, I just need to give him propper time. Right now it's almost three months out. Thanks again for the feedback.

Our campsites at the beautiful Emerald Forest Campground are about 100 feet apart, much too far for her liking.  :smt044 The camping, fishing, and camaraderie all stand to be outstanding.

I didn't mean to be a downer for the event with the Sato rod review, I just don't want any future winners to feel duped when they were expecting a high quality rod as a prize.

As for the event and event hosts: The Pacific Outfitters guys (Oestroms sp? and Cajun) are all nice guys, and Trinidad Head is a great place to host a tournament.  I highly recommend attending this tournament, and I plan to attend it in the future. The thing about TRW, is it has the potential to be a great tournament, and the only thing separating it from the great tournaments (such as Albion & Gimme Shelter) is the execution of namely: delivering promised prizes and organization of the awards ceremony.  I know that a lot of work goes into hosting TRW, and I fully appreciate what the Pacific Outfitters guys do to make TRW happen.

Just registered and feeling pretty good that it's all going to come together nicely. We definitely need to change the way this tournament was headed and get some more people to participate. I don't really think I have what it takes to place in the top of this tournament but would really like to see the participants happy with what they win. Personally I will be happy with a TRW shirt which I haven't seen in the last two years of participating. As for next year it would be nice to have a date set earlier so more people can plan this event into their summer.-Jeremy

If you look at previous entry forms its always asked what shirt size you wear and so I assumed a tee shirt was going to be given to every registered participant. Well to my knowledge that never happened for me or anyone else and was a little disapointed.  I'd be happy to pitch in extra for the registration to get one. Or maybe I'll just make some bad ass team tee shirts.

When you sign up for the tournament on our on-line site, when it asks you the fishing regulations, it also asks you your shirt size. I see that a few, only a few, of you left that blank. Don't worry, I know you signed up in time and I will personally reach out to you to get your shirt size. Good job Aaron staying positive and moving forward. This years event is going to be great. Anything I can do to help just ask. Craig

We never want anyone feeling duped, shafted, short changed or anything else.  :smt003 We have a great crew of four people helping out, putting this tournament together. Last year is was one and a half. With me being the half person. In two weeks we should be able to post what most of our prizes are going to be. We also created a new TRW logo for our shirts. I will show you that very soon.

In the past it has been a charity tournament with proceeds going toward local charities. That is one reason for not as big of prizes or shirts. almost all prizes in previous TRW were donated,

The tournament will be bigger with prizes being purchased and that seems to be what most people want. My purpose was local charities in need and still is...

Prizes are starting to build up. This year, along with kayak and fishing prizes, we are getting lots of local support. We have lots of gift cards donated from resturants, grochery stores, liquor stores and gas companies. McKenny's Do It Best donated a two BBQ's that sell for around $180 each! All bear will be sponsored again. In regards to kayak and fishing gear, we have Waterproof HD Cameras, PFD's, paddles, rods, reels, tackle, etc.

It's going to be a great year!

Lastly, I started a Pot Luck thread, because that is what we are going to do this year, instead of a fish fry. Everyone bring you favorite dish to the Rewards Pot Luck. We will have a prize for favorite dish too. See you all there!

Sorry about the confusion Greg, the "Handline  Challenge" is going to be it's own side competition just like the "Barbie Pole Challenge". If the handline is the only thing you are taking out,  then all you need to do is turn in you highest ranking fish. If you bring out fishing rods to, then your catch must be on video.
I'm going to try it this year because it sounds like fun.

Damn I'd love to win a new FF!

I've been trying to convince some kayaker friends of mine to sign up.  They expressed interest, especially when they learned it's not necessarily a "largest fish takes all" type of tournament and that an angler could very easily win it with a bunch of nice greenling or rockfish.  Hopefully they sign up!

Just a thought...but how about spreading the prizes around a little more for those of us that don't take this tourney too serious. Maybe a prize for largest of each species ? , That way it's not just a winner take all, because even I can get lucky once in awhile... :smt003, and / or raffle off a couple small prizes so if someone has a bad day ( ie : sick, no fish ) they may get something to brighten thier day.

How it's going to work is that 1st place get the first choice of the three packages, 2nd place gets the second choice of the two remaining packages and 3rd place gets the package that is left Below is the breakdown of the MAIN items in the package (there will be other in these packages too):

Package #1 - Two Old Town Predator Kayaks

With in those 6 fish, you must have at least 3 different species of the following: Lingcod, Halibut, Cabezon, Black Rockfish, Blue Rockfish, Greenling, Vermillion and China. Here is my rod for the Barbie Pole Challenge during Trinidad Rockfish Wars 4. 30lbs braided, may add a little more duct tape. Going with Toy Story because it lights up when I'm reeling in! If you haven't singed up yet, sign up at www.trw4.com (http://www.trw4.com)

Who else is entering this challenge? Lets see your rod combo.

Duct tape, what a concept!  Two years without, might have to try it this year.  I am in for the Barbie pole challenge (with a actual Barbie Pole) and I believe my teammate Crash is in too.

FYI - ALL of my fish from last year was caught on the Barbie pole, NONE on my other poles for whatever reason.

Thanks for the clarification on prizes Aaron!!

TRW4 Prize Structure:

Three big prize packages for 1st, 2nd & 3rd place teams.

Package #2 - Private Poker Tournament for 20 people, tournament also include Prime Rib dinner for 20 people and a Cigar Humidor filled with Cigars and lastly two Lowarnce Elite 4 HDI fishfinders.

Package #3 - Two CharBroil home BBQs ($180/each), two Midland 1080 HD Helmet Cameras (w/ all the mounts), two Suunto Core watches ($200/each).

We will also have prizes for:
*Each fish species that scores the highest
*Barbie Pole Challenge - Highest point value fish caught on a Barbie pole. (Must be on video)
*Handline Challenge - Highest point value fish caught on a handline. (Must be on video if you are fishing with rods too)

REMEMBER: Anyone can win this tournament, because the rules create a level playing field. That is why we did it this way. Each team can turn in up to 6 fish. With in those 6 fish, you must have at least 3 different species of the following: Lingcod, Halibut, Cabezon, Black Rockfish, Blue Rockfish, Greenling, Vermillion and China. You don't have to be a "pro" angler to win this tournament.

I hope this clears up any questions. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks everyone! Hope to see you all out there.

I had the same thought. The fish finders in that pack would be the only thing us non Humboldt people could use.

It's for a prime rib dinner and poker at the casino that you can see on the hill above the harbor. If you need help coming up with 20 people I think there are a few of us around that can help you out there :)

Remember if you are in second place you get to choose between the two remaining prize packages. The poker party could go to first place, if it gets chosen or go to third place if it's the last package to be chosen. Me personally, I don't need a new kayak, I'm fine with the ones I have. If I got first place I would choose the poker tournament. The poker tournament and dinner is worth $1500. Factor in the humidor with cigars and two fish finders and you added another $800 in value to the prize package.

In regards to the poker tournament for 20 people, there is no buy in. Casino supplies the chips and a 1st, 2nd &  3rd place prizes for the tournament winners. It's a pretty sweet deal that they are doing for us. As you know it also comes with dinner for 20, two fishfinder and a box of cigars.

If I was down in Sacramento and I won that,  I would plan a massive road trip "mandate"  with all my buddies and rage it up.

To sum it up, 3rd place may be the only one "stuck"  with this package. Even if you won this package, I bet you could get some pretty sweet trades from the locals, even out of towers. What I think is unique about our tournament is our main prize package items aren't a bunch of gear everyone already has. We do offer that gear but it's thrown in in addition to our main prizes.

See you in Humboldt in less than a month RacinRob and thanks for participating!

I think all of the prize packages are good.  I appreciate all of the hard work you are putting in to organizing this event.  If my team somehow won the poker prize package it would mean that my brother caught more than one fish in six hours.  Maybe we should have a poker tournament the night before at the campground.

+1.  These prize packages are legit!  I'm really looking forward to this year's Rockfish Wars.  MattSwayze and I have been talking strategy these past few days.  The combination of a 'team limit' and varied point values for each species opens the door for a variety of ways for one to approach this year's tourney.  I look forward to seeing how it all pans out.  Just crossing my fingers for good weather!

There is a closed low coming so maybe I will finally get some tuna this year.
If I can't get on a tuna trip Sunday then we should do a group halibut run.

There have been some big ones up to 75 lbs caught lately.

Looking good, Aaron!

And the forecast is looking fantastic!  This is seriously the best forecast of the entire summer up here!!

.SAT...N WINDS UP TO 5 KT. WAVES NW 3 FT AT 11 SECONDS.

If it materializes we should see some nice flat water - should be lake like, and pre-fishing Thursday and Friday look good too, as does post-fishing for Sunday.

Be ready to fish hard.  Could be foggy, could be hot as hell, and even if they say "up to 5 knots" it could be windy early or more likely windy later.

I'm betting on epic.   :smt001

Hey, LAST MINUTE WAFFLERS!  Sign up!!  It doesn't get any better than this!  Fill this field up so we can all celebrate a well earned victory with 50 teams vying for much more than just two brand new kayaks.

This is gonna be great!   :smt004

Shelter is never going to let you down, Gotta fish the shallow 20'-35' of water right in front of the harbor, there are big fish in there! Especially the Threshers, my brother and I hooked 5 of them in less than 2 hours, also saw a salmon and I believe Chris had one on for awhile. Get'em!

Well, I hope no one tried for Wednesday pre-fishing!   :smt005

It's hammered out there right now - 23 to 27 knots+ at Crescent City, and square swells up and down the north coast from the Cape to the border.

This isn't bad!  This means maybe the fish are hunkered down and will be hungry when it calms...   :smt001

I went out today in Trinidad but stayed south. No lings at all but a lot of very nice sized blacks in the 20 inch range.

Weather was actually really nice where I was fishing with great visibility. The surf at the launch spot was the largest I've seen yet though! Waves came all the way up to my front tires and I got the hell out of there just in time. See you all Saturday!

Yeah it's important to watch the tides.  There are some 7+ft tides this week.  You don't want to be parked on the beach for those.

Fished Trinidad today.  Started out north toward the wash rocks, turned back.  Too rough for a solo paddle.  Joined other local kayakers in the bay.  Caught small blacks.  Heads up about the flies.  Gloves and shroud would have been nice today.

Day of the tournament details:

The tournament will begin at 5:45am on Saturday morning. There are very strict and regulated parking rules. I recommend commuting if at all possible. You can only Park on the West side in front of the beach on in the gravel parking lot. First come first serve. You can not park anywhere there is pavement. If the allocated parking fills up you will be stuck with a long walk up a hill.

Once you and your teammate are ready to launch, you must check in with one of the three people wearing bright green vests. They will inspect your kayak sign your hand, if you need it signed and send you off. Don't expect us to spend time and answer rules and regulations questions during that time because they will be slammed.

What if I have 3 kayaks on a trailer. Where do I park?

You should be able to unload on the beach launch then park at the gravel area by the beach at the bottom of the hill next to Trinidad head before you drive into the parking lot for the restaurant.

Just learned my house guests will be camping so if anyone is in need of a place to stay without dogs, I have space for 1 or 2.  I am about 20 minutes from the launch site.
Let me know!  Contact me directly - I won't be checking NCKA site or PMs as I have a FULL day! 7078224815 or see me at the meeting later today.

Congrats to the Mayes brothers, Rob and Adam and the other winners. Strong work guys, it was nice seeing everyone. This was a really good tournament, things ran well and the wind and swell were extremely mild. Saw some really nice Blacks, a couple of big  Verms, and  some of those who put in the work scored big lings. Thanks to Pacific Outfitters, Emerald Forest Campground, Mad River, and all the sponsors.
Sincerely, Amos

What a great time at TRW IV. I didn't know if I was going to be able to attend until a few days before the tournament and my usual partner couldn't make the trip out. Boyce Meredith mentioned on LCKA that he was looking to partner up and fish hard so ended up pm'ing him and worked out a plan. Come game time we were on the water at 5:45 headed north in the thick fog. For us the fishing was a steady bite nothing red hot but it never turned off. Our 3rd species hooked up while I was eating my sandwich of course and was a beautiful sunflower looking greenling. Congrats to the other winners Rob, Adam, Chris, Matt and thank you Pacific outfitters for putting on another great event!

Had a blast.  It was one of those really perfect north coast days with a flat ocean and not too much wind.  Brandi and I got a 10th place finish, wwe got 4 species - a greenling, some lingcod, blacks and a 24.75" cabezon which was only .25" short of the biggest of the tournament participants - Kiet, who was not entered but fished his ass off, brought in a 28.75", 19 lbs cab that is the biggest I've ever seen come out of California kayak or powerboat.

Well run and executed tournament, hats off to the pacout guys and I am already looking forward to next year!

This was by far the best TRW yet.  Aside from the good fishing that Trinidad usually provides, PacOut has shown that they can run a smooth and high quality fishing tournament. This is a tournament not to miss out on.

Thanks to Aaron Ostrom and his crew for a great weekend.

Congrats to Rob and Adam on another great outing.  A special congrats to my brother on catching the biggest verm and scoring the two highest fish for our team.

A special thanks to Pacific Outfitters, Ryan, and Aaron on running a great tournament.  I think next year my brother and I should get a senior bonus on the scoring.  You know we do get the early bird senior special at Denny's.  LOL
