Title: SIMPLY FISHING 2015 REPORT?
Post by: fishkraft on June 19, 2015, 10:50:22 PM
This event is officially IN THE BOOKS!

(http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab32/fishkraft/SFT_2015/SFT_LOGO_2015_zpsqv1znkxg.jpg) (http://s847.photobucket.com/user/fishkraft/media/SFT_2015/SFT_LOGO_2015_zpsqv1znkxg.jpg.html)

Ok, here it is a week after the tournament and I finally have few minutes to write a report. Please forgive me for lagging this year but as some of you already know we had a bit of scare on the home front and I’ve been trying to take care of work and the house stuff so Jen can rest and focus on healing. Data recovery was successful and I'll have more photos once Dustin gets his porn off the disc and hands it over, LOL.

WOW! What an awesome event. We had a super great time on the coast at the Simply Fishing Tournament. What a wonderful community of kayak anglers we have here in NorCal. First I have to say thanks to all the wonderful sponsors and donors - Viking Kayaks USA , The Headwaters Kayak Shop, Bending Branches, B2 Squid, Big Hammer, PhatHeadz Jigs,  Pacific Sportsman, United Composites, Seeker Fishing Rods, The New Huck Finn, Tigerfish Sportfishing, EGO Fishing Tools, Pacific Outfitters, Darin Dohi, Ethan Ebersol, Amos Foreman, Annie Nagel, Tim Weaver and of course Craig Davis. And to all who helped pick up the slack that being a one man show created, I thank you from the bottom of my heart - Amos Foreman, DeAmbra Newell, Samantha Elliott, John Havemann and of course the raffle ticked crew, Paloma, Jolie, Crystal, Adrian As well as photographers Sara Wirt and Dustin Sneed.

Tournament morning started early. I found Andy Morales waiting at the check-in for his lure kit and hull inspection at 4:30, ready to kick things off. Thanks to my crew, check-in was a nice steady flow of kayaks and anglers from 4:30 until about 9:00. At this point I ran back up to tourney central, fed my little one some real breakfast (thanks for the donuts you guys, she loved them) and got started setting up the awards tent and tables.

Once the Potluck tables and awards area was ready I headed back down to the weigh in table to find Andy was not only the first one in line in the morning he was also the first one back with fish to weigh, BIG FISH. Quickly word got around and somebody jumped on the radio and let the other competitors know that they had better get serious, Andy has two fish over thirty six inches. As time went on there was a steady stream of competitors heading back in having lost their gear or ready to step up to the weighg-in table. For three solid hours none could best Andy’s two huge lings and it looked like he was about to win his first NCKA kayak fishing tournament.

At about 1:30, half an hour before the weigh in deadline, The Ocean Kayak Crew, Erik Sowa and Craig Davis, head up the long hill at the launch and as they turn the corner at the top of the hill I make eye contact with Craig and I can tell he’s got a contender. After a couple of minutes BS’in with the rest of us he uncovers his fish and it’s BIG, just like Andy’s. In fact it looks to be about the same size and you can tell this is gonna be close. At this point I figure it all but over. The wind has picked up and it’s pretty clear that the fishing is over for the day.

So, I grab the EGO balance beam and Andy’s fish, I place his fish on one side. Craig brings his fish over and tries to put it on the other side. We fumble around with the wet and slippery beast for a minute while everybody watches and waits and finally get it on the beam. As I lift he beam I am impressed by the weight of the two fish and just as I get it up to eye level… BAM! The beam gives and both fish tumble to the ground. I was surprised and for a moment a little concerned that the two almost identical fish will get mixed up. Then I remembered that Andy’s fish was a bit paler from being stored for a few hours. We quickly sorted out who’s was who’s and I reached for the digital scale. Andy was up first and as I lift it up I can see the heavy, sagging belly and I think to myself , this could go either way. I hold up the scale and as I look at the read out Luis comes over to film and and I read it out ‘thirteen point seven” then quickly correct myself “thirteen point ZERO seven”. The tension is palpable as I hand Andy his fish and Craig holds his out towards the scale. I place the scale hook under the gill plate and lift, it slips. I place the hook under again and lift. The numbers start flashing and for a second it seemed as if they wouldn’t stop. Then they slowed… and stopped. THIRTEEN POINT FOUR! five ounces bigger, CRAIG WINS AGAIN!

THEN, just as everybody is high fiving and back slapping Craig, congratulating him on his repeat, I hear someone say “is that Naoaki?”. I turn towards the top of the hill and sure enough there’s Naoaki. I see that he is struggling a little and immediately chalk it up to the steep climb from the launch below. I see he has a couple of nice fish hanging on the stringer over his shoulder and I think, those aren’t THAT heavy. Then I see it… between his legs, down near his ankles, something is swinging. I look closer, this thing is HUGE, much bigger than Andy’s or Craig’s and I holler at Craig ‘Craig! Look!, look, between his legs, that’s a tail!”. Craig turns and looks, his eyes get big, REAL BIG. He immediately smiles and takes a step towards Naoaki as if he’s going to congratulate him. Naoaki smiles that broad smile of his that that can only mean pure mischief and starts laughing. It’s not his fish, he heard on the radio that Craig had won and when he saw a guy at the launch with this huge ling he asked if he could carry it up. OMG, totally hysterical, everyone fell apart laughing.

So that’s it, Craig wins again… not quite.

As you may know each year at the tournament we have a benefit raffle, This year the raffle benefitted friend, angler and note worthy custom rod builder, Brenti Ikari, Owner/Builder at Sato Custom Rods. Lots and lots of great prizes were raffled and the grand prize winner of the Viking Kayaks USA Profish Reload was Mark Lee. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier family than his when he won, Congratulations, Mark (and family).

And, thanks to all our wonderful donors and sponsors we raised three thousand four hundred and eighty nine dollars from the raffle. And to top it off our favorite double dipper, Craig Davis, took the five hundred dollar winning check that Dan Arbuckle and the Headwaters Kayak Shop donated, and crossed his own name out and endorsed it over to Brent as well. Making it a total of three thousand nine hundred and eighty nine dollars. WOW Craig, I will never forget that. You’re a class act, brother.
That’s it, another year in the books, Thanks again the sponsors an dparticipants, ruben

The Headwaters Kayak Co. out of Lodi has once again stepped up to make things a little more interesting. Dan, clever man that he is, came up with the idea to stick with the theme of the tournament and keep it simple by offering up cold, hard cash! $500.00 in prize money. Big thanks to these guys for always pitching in for our events.

He has stage four colon cancer and due to the side effects from chemotherapy has not been able to work for MANY months. All profits from the raffle will go directly to the GoFundMe account that was set up to help with the financial burdens that he is suffering

I also wanna say thanks to NCKA rookie of the year (in my book anyway): AnnieAreYouOk. I have yet to see anyone grasp the NCKA spirit as quickly as Annie. The Force is strong in this one. In lieu of buying a truck Annie has offered up her recently "acquired" extedend a bed kayak carrier. Thanks Annie, I wanna be like you when I grow up.

Definitely somewhere on the Sonoma Coast. Will finalize when I get a better idea about the numbers. The past two years it's been at Timber Cove but that place will only handle so many people..

Ruben,

Fort Ross would be a killer location. They have an awesome beach for awards/ chill/ bbq. Plus they have that large peninsula that shelter from the NW wind. I would be willing to donate my time/ truck to shuttle boats/ peeps/ logistics down from the lot.

But no matter where, I'm looking forward to it. Challenging and fun event for sure!

The north cove wall doesn't really block the wind from the NW as it will race across the bluff then fall into the cove save the extreme shoreline. It does protect from the NW swell very good. The beach is a wonderful place. Not sure how the state would react. I would love to see a hard trail hike. Wheeling through rough terrain and having to carry down a steep cliff trail. :smt003 :smt006

bummer --for us it could be done... but to ad to the long drive logistical plan stage+the need to plan with work for time off + that slam down is the weekend before+ no location = no  way to plan our stay overnight/nights=makes it even harder to try and attend this one again...oh well..
maybe next time  :smt001

Ok, so FFTC is flashing back to the original tourney super secret location hullabaloo. Since then many people have expressed the same concerns as Craig Mac (can't remember your handle, sorry bro). So this time it's just a matter of getting a feel for the attendance. I don't think TC can handle a full on NCKA EVENT so I will post up the location as soon as I decide where would be best (hopefully within two or three weeks). In the meantime, for those of you who need to know now, it will definitely be on the Sonoma Coast and Ocean Cove is a great place to camp and is centrally located and drivable to any possible tournament location.

Fish on,
ruben

Heading there this afternoon with a large group. We stopped doing the group site because of a shrinking group. Always able to find a spot for any size group to gather, usually out of the wind. And Gary is a great guy.

Wet/dry suit, marine VHF radio, and personal floatation vest along with the ability to self rescue is a bare minimum. You will be in a setting supported by other kayakers. There are additional items you might like to add but these will get you going.

I got an extra wet suit that will fit folks 5-10-...6-3....you would need long sleeve t and  hoody--and some wet shoes--sneakers and socks...baseball cap and shades  ...got an extra pfd and a really tuff --good---ocean rod and reel all set up spooled etc...they set you up with the 3 lures---you wont need a fish finder  :smt003

Funny story regarding Simply...Last year I misplaced Bloodbath's filet knife (I think I left it at the potluck?) Fast forward one year and Ruben hunted me down at Albion this past weekend and made sure I got Joe's knife back. Can't believe he went out of his way to get it back to it's rightful owner, it really should've just gone to him as the spoils of the tourney. Thanks again man, I'll do my best to not be "that guy" and leave a bunch of junk behind at this years tourney. All signed up and ready to rock it Simply style :headbang:

Ocean cove is cool because they just charge per car...I've had family trips where we take over a whole section of the campground and Noone ever questions anything  as long as you have your tag that you payed on your hood. No nickel and diming for extra kids or granma.

Hoping to have a fishing kayak by then. If not are people able to come watch and ask a few questions.  I am a total newbie to kayak fishing.

From what I understand, the answer is Yes you can come and watch, hang out,  asK questions.  I am new and that is exactly what I will be doing.  :smt006

Awesome!  Hope to see you out there!

I'm relatively new to the kayak fishing scene and thought this would be a great introductory event to meet a solid group of like minded people. A few quick questions about SIMPLY FISHING 2015; This might be a no brainer but "no electronics" doesn't mean no vhf radios right? just nothing to improve ones fishing advantages Im assuming? Also, the lures will be provided but do we use our own weights of our liking? shape, size, etc? As for the Potluck, bring a desert and some wine is what I'm reading?

Sorry Brother, one paddler/angler per kayak.
OK Fishkraft, your the host so I believe you and will obey   :smt010...but I feel I must object.  The only advantage would be two paddlers instead of one, both would pay a registration for the tourney and obey all rules... infact they would be competing against each other....I guess I am viewing it as an honest competitor that would be appalled at somehow using the tandem to an advantage.  Does it say this somewhere in the rules and I am just not seeing it?  Wouldn't be the first time I missed seeing something right in front of my face!

Thank you for responding, it would have been horrible for both of us to pay and trek up there only to be let down.

Think it's fairly "simple", and spelled out in the rules:

Quote
Keepn' it simple and leveling the playing field by limiting all anglers to a kayak, a paddle, one rod and reel, three lures (provided), no baits, no scents, no mechanized propulsion systems, no electronics.

I am not writing this to be rude, troll (fishing pun! lol) or debate to the end of changing your mind.  The rules are as you say they are....  But I must say that maybe it is too simply spelled out...that is why I had to ask....when read it does NOT say 1 angler per kayak.  Your own quote says "all anglers to a kayak, a paddle and one rod and three lures"....so If two people are on a tandem Kayak, I believe everyone would agree they are still limited to their kayak, they would each have 1 pole and they would each have 1 paddle and blah blah blah.  That literally fallows the rules to the letter.  So when you say it is "Simple" and "spelled out in the rules"....well it clearly is not.

I am sorry if this sounds rude or like I am being difficult.  You make the rules, and what you say goes.  But perhaps the rules should read: "Keepn' it simple and leveling the playing field by limiting kayaks to 1 angler, with 1 paddle, 1 pole....."  You have to agree THAT is "spelling it out" and "keeping it simple".

I don't claim to much of a fisherman...but I do know how to read :)

You asked, received a reply, and then try to refute it, but then say you dont want to debate to the end of changing your mind? If two people are on one kayak, then not all anglers are on "A" kayak. It is not a tandem kayak tournament.  If it's not clear enough, or if you have an issue you wish to take up with the event organizer, do it via PM.

Maybe try a different approach instead of objecting/challenging the rules. Try asking if anyone was has any extra/buddy boats they could loan you. I'm sure plenty of guys would be willing to bring out there loaners.

can I bring my peddles with me in case I want to help other out? Can I use my fish finder only to find my way home if I get lost? If I bring another pole with but only want to use it as showing I am cool is that ok? What does "Simply" mean ,And does it refer to a brand of lures or just a state of mind?

I do not see how you can write that and not understand how your own grammar destroys your own argument.  You write "If two people are on one kayak, then not all anglers are on "A" kayak".....Do you not see how if two people are on one kayak then they are INDEED on "A" kayak.  I mean, what do you think they are on...air?...a car?...a really big fish?....nope they are on "A" tandem kayak which by definition is...A KAYAK.  This was the only point I was trying to make.

My apologies to everyone.  I still stand by that I was not debating to the end of changing the rules or getting in to the tourney with two people on a tandem.  What started off as an innocent inquiry turned into me getting offended at AlsHobieOutback's remark "Think it's fairly "simple", and spelled out in the rules".  Instead I got caught up in trying to show how the wording of the rules actually does not prohibit two people on a tandem, and how it is not ""simple", and spelled out in the rules."

AlsHobieOutback, you are correct, after I got the answer to my original question I should have send a PM to the host pointing out the small, but never the less confusing loop whole.  I could have avoided all of this.

You guys are just parsing words at this point. The person who organizes the event is like Vince McMahon, the Commissioner. They get to set the rules, change the rules, or disqualify participants. Or whatever else they want to do. These things aren't run by NCKA or Bass Pro Shops or Brawndo. If somebody wants to start their own event/tourney, they are free to do so.

But I totally get where FishnZombi is coming from. It's a valid question. However...go back and look at threads from previous iterations of this event, and you'll see people offering to loan out paddle yaks to the plethora of pedal-yakking complainers. Because people on this site are crazy generous. Seriously, all you have to do is say "Hey guys, can I borrow a kayak for a buddy who normally fishes with me on my tandem? Because we would both like to participate in the tourney."

Also, people here are quick to forgive. So don't feel like you've alienated yourself or pissed everybody off, due to questioning tourney rules on the net. Just get over it and move on. Easy peasy.

Well sorry my reply wasn't grammatically correct.  I was trying to be funny, but I guess I failed. Maybe you should question why even states in the rules "a kayak"? My guess would be to keep people from asking if they can fish in a boat, or off a SUP or can they just dive in and shoot fish instead?  You have to draw the line somewhere, don't you?   :smt002

Thanks for posting up the Lures Ruben.

Interesting ODPS can't get the Seniorita BH in stock for the past 8 months but suddenly they are available for this.

Maybe we should donate all unused lures after the tournament and put 'em in a bag to auction off.

I'd be happy to if that works for NapaAndy.
If someone wants to set it up, Id be in to participate. Cant arrange it myself though.

Ok. I have a paypal account. If we can get enough people to paypal me the money, we will reserve for Friday and Saturday night. You should be able to find me on paypal at dkend-at-pacbell-dot-net. Remember to send it as a gift so paypal doesnt take a cut. If we don't get enough people, I will return the money right away.

Be sure to include your NCKA handle with the paypal.

So let me get this straight, i didn't find the answer to this anywhere.

There's only 1 grand prize ($500 cash) for the heaviest ling.

All other prizes are for the raffle. Raffle tickets are sold at the event for $1 each.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Cant wait to be out there!

The $500 is just to sweeten it up.

Woot Woot! Your friend and mine, James Pratt aka Rider just came through big time. He arranged for California Canoe and Kayak to donate a guided kayak fishing trip, " CCK will donate one free guided kayak fishing trip. This Includes the use of a 2015 Hobie revolution 13 or outback. The location & date will need to be determined and agreed upon between the guide and winner of the prize".

Hey all, Quick question.
Would anyone object to my wife paddling along beside me? She has no interest in fishing and has never been on saltwater but has lots of experience on freshwater.
Her birthday is a couple of days before the tournament and I got her a really nice new boat.
I won't at all be offended if that conflicts with any rules.

Thanks for any input.

I have a buddy coming too on my buddy yak that just barely missed the sign up. He will just be fishin solo for meat no gps or electronics either. His first time on salt too. I had a question though about camping. ..I have a small camp trailer and need to call and reserve a spot preferably with hookups. Where or what area should I get? Do they know about the ncka group if I call?

BTW, I assume I can't take my dog with me on kayak - will make it non-human propelled and not a solo - right? ;)

You are confirmed on the list. Keep in mind that we need a minimum of ten people to make a reservation. Otherwise it will be first come first serve for everybody and I'll transfer your money back. As soon as we get 10 on the list I will reserve the group site for Friday and Saturday night. I hope it works out. I'm looking forward to it. I'm going to bring my folding table to use as a card table. Maybe we can get a game of poker going. I'll also bring some firewood to Donate to a group campfire. I wonder if any of the ukulele players are comming to the tourney.

the only dangerous condition I have ever dealt with here is dealing with a big  north swell coming in on a low tide , got tore up big time this year but probably shouldn't have even gone out but it was opening weekend. 95% of time no issues.

They do have after hour registration, IT IS WAKE YOUR ASS UP IN THE MORNING TO SEE YOUR Damn Tag!

Don't call if you have never been here just show up and pay them the next morning when you do check in. You are too busy thinking to much about this, Just start thinking about fishing instead!

Since no FF or GPS allowed try varying distances off the kelp beds or look for pinnacles marked by kelp. There are a few in both directions.  If you have a preferred depth use a line counter reel or count the passes on your level wind. Or, you could follow anyone named Craig, Allen or Raydon.  :smt003

In the Ocean  :smt002
Since no FF or GPS allowed try varying distances off the kelp beds or look for pinnacles marked by kelp. There are a few in both directions.  If you have a preferred depth use a line counter reel or count the passes on your level wind. Or, you could follow anyone named Craig, Allen or Raydon.  :smt003

Or Nick - did you see the whoppa-whoppa he bagged last weekend?

Hmmm... Aren't the Amish landlocked Farmers?
I hear tell the Amish sit around  the hearth atellin stories aboot places a month or mores buggy ride away where the English live and the water has salt in it. The English in their foolish ways go out in boats made of minerals and oils fashioned by unholy robots that do the work of men,. Heating the minerals hotter than the fires of damnation and letting them cool into a boat that is strangely hollow inside. Instead of using a stout branch to row their boat these foolish English use a strange thing, light as a baby, called Carbon Fiber. Instead of wearing the things the Lord gave us, like cotton and wool, for their clothing upon the waters, they clothe themselves in oddities called neoprene and Goretex. Silly English

Lets talk about the boat ramp at Ocean Cove.  Have you seen that thing?  It's long, steep, dirt and rocks, with an S turn in the middle.  You can't see the bottom from the top unless you go around to the lookout area.  One time I was headed down and noticed 2 or 3 power boats cued up at the top waiting their turn to back down.  I felt weird about cutting so asked for the okay and got the nod to proceed.  For those Ocean Cove regulars is that the way?

Wow that launch sounds really annoying. Anything to lock the yaks up to down by the beach and keep them there overnight by chance? Also, sup with the campfire situation? Love me a good campfire they cool with it there? Do I need to bring an above ground firepit?

Roadway to the cove launch has been graded a bit so maybe a hair easier pulling the yak uphill. Remember why you're there. SIMPLY FISHING. Which means we're all traveling lighter. No drives, batteries, electronics no no multiple weighty lure selections. Really should fly up the hill at the end.

I didn't see anything to lock to. It's a pretty rocky beach and not real easy to wheel on. I don't know how high the waterline is at high tide, but I'd want to be sure before I left my kayak there. Maybe we can get a volunteer or two to taxi everyone up the ramp. There are campfire rings. I am planning a fire at the group camp. I don't know if there will be an official gathering area. I was told that the group site is a good option for the potluck because it is level and has more room. Bring some wood, I'm sure you can find a place to burn it.  :smt006

I have seen the water all the way to the cliff area. Absolutely no beach at all at that time. It was just a road that lead to and stopped in the water. Pretty fun when the waves are ripping in too! Time it right and you land high and dry on the ramp. But get out of the way fast before the next wave crashes in. Seen it like that 2 times before. Plenty of times it is flat though.

I'll bring along two or three 6foot+ cable locks. Lock a few yaks together and they should be fine if it becomes an option. With my lumber rack, my little Toyota pick-up can usually carry 5 yaks and i don't mind to taxi but y'all have to walk. Only room for dogs and boats  :smt003

At GS9 two of us sat in the back of the pickup and held onto the front handle of our kayaks and towed them up the hill.

I could bring my microsport trailer.  It will haul 3 yaks and might still fit one in the back of the truck.

If you've got a good set of wheeleze you could also tie a short leash from the front of a yak to the back of the trailer so that's at least 2 more that could hitch a ride up.  So maybe 6 each trip.

What say you?

It might be quicker to sit in the back and hold on to them. Also backing down the ramp with a trailer looks a bit tricky. I suppose it makes a difference if we leave our wheels on the beach or not. I can only guess at how many people will hit the beach at one time. One or two at a time, or large groups?

Lol. Proof you don't get it but it's all good. Use the Internet as a research tool and help yourself grow up.
And honestly I was in a tizzy because I'm partially disabled and that ramp my not work as well for me as it would a more able bodied person. Gender aside, I'm voicing my disappointment at a group that wouldn't consider that some of us aren't what we used to be. It (op) also had merit to discuss a plan to reduce our groups impact on fellow patrons. If we put NCKA stickers on boats and shirts we should properly represent our group so were welcomed in the future.
Cheers!!

Last year before the tourney the forecast was calling for a sharknado type storm to end all storms and wipe out all of humanity. One year later we're all still here and there's some sac crew guys who wish they hadn't missed an awesome weekend of fishing FAC waters. Don't be that guy :smt002

The last 2 days have been fine at Shelter Cove even though the forecasts have been shitty looking.  You just don't know unless you go.

Yep. Last year the forecasted hurricane didn't start to blow until late in the day.

And if you think pulling the kayak up the hill at OC is tough, try TC.

Wind, its part of kayak fishing.  It blew at GS 9 and we still went out.  I meant Shelter Cove not Timber. :smt003

Or you could all stop being little bitches and hand roll your kayak down the pretty short hill like people do every day.  :smt006
Genuinely ROFLMAO  :smt005
No less, Bitches fit in my truck just fine. Less testosterone. Just how I like it  :smt006

EDIT: So that seems funnier when you know I'm Transgender (woman trapped in a mans body). As such, I am a bitch. But only on special occasions. Sorry if that was taken as smart ass :smt006

So will you be tucked or untucked at this event?

I want to be clear that when I wrote this I thought you were joking. The majority of people on this forum are men and a lot of us kid, prod, verbally abuse each other all the time.......in fun.

I have nothing against Transgenders and I apologies if I offended you honestly.  That was never my intent.

I was offended by your comment of growing up though......thats why I gave you the smiling finger.  :smt001

What's the start and weigh-in time? Sorry if I missed it, I seen 8:30am - 5pm from the eventzilla site but that's not right... right?
What are the lure weights (lead heads and iron)?

Thanks!

Agreed, the point n click looks really good, but its been really unreliable at least the last couple months for me.  It's always been worse than predicted recently.  Best bet is to be ready for anything, as Rob always is!  Let's just hope the wind is down since none of us have our pedals available :)

Truly. I thought he was just waving so I wasn't particularly offended at the transgender thing. Been over it for years. The bitches comment effectively muted the input from a small group. Like I said I thought the blue guy just waves like I do lol. I'll bring extra venison and home made granola to pair with an oatmeal stout and perhaps mend a bridge. Nice thing about Ocean Cove is there is no assigned campsite so everyone can just make Shuville without having to reserve the spots!  :smt044  Will look for everyone up there Friday night. Later fellas! :smt006

I listened to the Giants last Friday night and Saturday afternoon at OC. Best coverage is when there is a continuous cloud cover from SF.

I still think it'll be bigger out there than the point n click says, but I'm running up there tonight after work hopefully.

I've been looking forward to this even since June, however the back to school sickness has hit my house!  Two kids, wife and myself are sick.  I'll have to sit this one out.  Traildad can give my group camp site to someone else.  Have a good time all and be safe!

I would prefer dried squid, they are sun cooked and swallow them whole so when you throw up you can still use them lol...

So, its my first time at SIMPLY and I have some super dumb questions.

Subject line says 'schedule'.  To avoid having to read all 34 pages of comments, can someone tell me what page the schedule is on?  Or is the schedule as simple (pun intended!) and brief as the first post #1 -  5am launch, lures handed out at the fishing cleaning station at 4:30am?

I also haven't even thought about camping till now (work has kept me preoccupied) and hoping to hook up/camp with SCTrace, Old #7 et all.  Where can I start looking to find you?

Thanks!

Yeah Brandi it's that simple. There has been no formal timing of the potluck as of yet. So how about potkuck at 4:00, raffle and grand prize to follow.

Oh and camping is $24 per vehicle. Per night. No advantage to sharing unfortunately. If you don't hook up with Dennis or Trace I have extras reserved at tourney central in group site one.

Rule Clarification:

Bait vs hitchhiker - If you put it on the hook and drop it down, it's bait. If you hook it while fishing and another fish grabs it while you're reeling it in, it's a hitchhiker.

So we are not allowed to bring additional gear on board? Reason i ask is that, if i run out of all 3 rigs or have given up on the tourney, would i be able to use other rigs? Are there wristbands? A removal of such wristband would suggest disqualification and i would be able to go ahead and fish however i want.

I mean, winning is going to be tough, but i just don't want to lose all my rigs in a worse case scenario, not being able to fish and Going home without dinner since i have drive 3 hours to attend the event.  But if im fishing the full time allowed, 5am to 12ish, Thats 7 hours. Ive lost more rigs than that in less time.

You could maybe put a reserve package down on the beach. If you lose your gear head in to the beach and log out of the tourney. Then head back out for dinner. I think that would be acceptable.

I had a great time. It was great to meet many of you guys. Great crowd, great place, great event.  Great job ruben.

Report: i did pretty good compared to other times i usually go out fishing here in the bay area. Probably because the fishing is a lot better than down here. Conditions were pretty ugly, usually i would get seasick, but this time i did just fine, trying out new tricks to avoid sea sickness.  Launched at about 7:30, and cone back around 12:30.  Bagged: 2x lings (23, 25 inches), and 3 big coppers/gophers. Released a pretty big canary (see video) and a few undersized lings.

Video shows some of my hookups, and at the end will show a clip of Sledge netting a potential winner ling.  But ill let him tell the story.

Thanks ruben and all the sponsers and gear guys for making this event possible and very fun.

Thanks Ruben and all the sponsors for another great event. Congrats Craig for the win... again! You're a class act buddy!

Myself, Kara and the kids camped with Jake, Beth and their kids. They actually saved us a spot which was awesome. We had a great time hanging out with them, good people for sure. I fished North near the point, shallow near that one guy. I caught a lot of med size lings, couple greenling and some rockfish. The hammer got tore off quick so I worked the iron for most of my success. That b2 squid thing just brought in a lot of small rockies. I ended the day with a 33" ling and a nice verm for the table. It was a fun event and I'm glad the WX worked out in the AM.

There is one thing I REALLY want to mention. While I and this other guy helped Kirk (Lil'Riverman) load his boat onto his van towards the bottom section of the ramp, I noticed out of the corner of my eye this kid on a bike whips by me doing like 20mph. His legs are out and he's screaming and way out of control and heading for the cliff. This guy who helped with the kayak right behind me, I believe his name was Keith, but not sure, jumps out and close lines the kid off the bike and they both tumble to the ground. The kid was a bit chunky so the guy really had to time and do it right to stop the momentum so they both don't go off the cliff. The kid is a bit scraped up but alive! Anyway long story short, this dude saves this kids life, NO FUK'N JOKE. Neither me or my buddy Tim have a doubt in my mind that if he didn't do what he did that kid would of went off the cliff and took a 15' header into the boulder below. He would of been dead or seriously fuk'd up.

Who was this dude? I have a few packs of Branson baits for you man! I don't want to hear "Nah, you would of done the same", yes I would have but you did it and that's some hero shit in my book. PM me your name and address bro!

Mike

I took over 120 pictures. Viewed them all a few times on my camera. Took card out of camera, placed into computer = no pictures. WTF? Re-insert card into camera and now it seems like the camera won't recognize the card.

I'm so f***ing pissed, and so sorry to Ruben. I had all of the raffle pics on there. :smt013

The same thing happend to my wife's camera a few months back. I found a free recovery program online and it worked great to recover them. Dustin I'll take a look at what the program's name is when I get home tonight after work. I'll send you a PM with the info.

You're free to take a look at it. I think it's toast. The recovery programs work for corrupted files that you can see on your card. My card shows nothing.

Btw the black  paddle I found alone on the cove as we all left Sunday was Mike/Sledges...--if you look at the pics you'll find he lost a few things this weekend  :smt005

bummer for him and me (game clip  :smt002) I told him to tie it on--tie it on---tie on--laces out --laces out!!!!

anyways wish  I would have taken more/better  pics they really were an afterthought..forgive the photobomb of the thread but want to share these
Thank you again Ruben and all sponsors and congrats to C Davis and the class move he made with the winnings ...unreal weekend

topped it off by coming home and gifting two whole legal/tagged abs to my nephews who in turn gifted us live spot prawns from their job/boat and some fresh bonita steaks they caught this weekend miles out -sport fishing.... :smt003

the last two sunset pics were us pulling back into Monterey as we came down 1-past seaside  and looking across to P.G..what a way to tuck into bed a perfect weekend!!!  :smt001

Thanks Ruben for setting everything up. I wanted to make a bigger weekend out of it, bring the wife and daughter up and camp out with everyone but work and life got in the way so I had to do a one day strike mission. I'm not the most outgoing socially so I'm not really good at introducing myself but did manage to meet a few nice folks and talk with a couple of familiar faces. Next year I'll make it a family weekend trip. Caught a few short lings and a 27' inch keeper, a nice verm and a cabby to bring home, all in all had a fun day fishing. Had to split early to get home, bummed on missing the potluck and raffle (hope some of you enjoyed my daughters chocolate chip cookies). Always impressed by the NCKA vibes.

This was both mine and christina's first time to Ocean Cove and participating in the Simply Tourny. All I could say is what a Great Venue, Event, and Time we had. Other than the Long Ramp down to the water, its a pretty sweet place to Fish, Dive, and Camp. Lady Christina outfished me this time landing 4 Lings, 2 Cabs, and a couple small RF. I managed 2 lings and a couple RF tourny day and sweetin it up with a Limit of Abs on Sunday. That was Fun. I must Admit, I was Rooting for Andy when he radio-in he had a 36in. on the Board. I have never seen Him up that early and determine to fish :smt005 seriously, Muggles was on a Mission! That was close bro..Damn Craig! :smt044 :smt002 Impressive tho..Congrats RavensBlack!

Thank you Ruben and all the help for making such a great weekend for us all to enjoy, truly Goodtimes. And Lastly but not leastly Thank You Sponsors for all the support.

Had a f*ing rad weekend out at the cove. Bummed that I missed the festivities due to a wedding, but managed to make it back it time to see some homies. Camp started Wednesday with Keit and Kyle. Thursday folks filtered in. Had a wonderful time with DesertDiver & Co., Alfredo, Old#7, Butete, Tote, Cabezedewhateverthehell, Keil, Dustin, 9erFan, Rider, AnnieAYOK, and everyone else that had fun.
Great event Ruben! Kudos!

Sarah promises to get some pics up soon. She's headed to Maine for a photo gig, but working on it.

My first Simply Fishing Tournament and it was awesome!  The wife had a great first time at the Cove and seeing all the fish and abalone come in. The daughter had a great time playing with the older girls.  I had a great time fishing with the experts on a semi-even playing field (nothing beats their experience... but I'm learning)!  Caught a few undersized lings, a gopher for dinner, and a pb 23" Vermillion.  Huge congrats to Craig and Andy... those lings were impressive!

The icing on the cake was winning stuff at the raffle.  Came away with a cool Bending Branches hat and shirt, a new kayak strap, and the VIKING PROFISH RELOAD!!!!  :jawdrop :metal :beer3

Still basking in the STOKE!  Thanks again Ruben, Head Waters, Viking Kayaks, and all the other Sponsors for a kick ass tournament.

Took the Profish Reload out on Sunday for its maiden voyage and it's an AWESOME yak.  Was thinking about getting a rudder, but it doesn't need it.  It tracks beautifully and feels fast on the water even in sloppy conditions.  It felt very nimble and very stable.

Even though I'm a Hobie fan, I'm definitely going to be sharing time fishing this kayak... maybe even trying to surf it.  I can't thank you guys enough!

Thanks to Raydon for the pictures and all the fine folks I met.  I regret not hanging out more with the guys in Group Site 4, but it was a Daddy duty weekend.  NCKA is such an awesome community.

I'm counting the days until next year's Simply Fishing!

I checked it out again on my lunch break. Took card out of camera, placed it into PC and there is nothing on it. Says 3.9 something gigs of free space on my 4g card. Put card back in camera and it is recognizing it now, but no photos on card.  :smt011

The thing is with storage devices is that unless you write over it, the data is still there even if you delete it.  The key however is to NOT USE THE CARD if you want to recover anything.  Seriously, let one of give it a shot.

AHO is 1 billion percent correct!!!!

When a file is deleted, only the header of the file is removed; the remainder of the files still resides on the media.

UNLESS you start trying to recover it yourself incorrectly, or rewrite over the exist files, or inadvertently re-format it (which some devices will prompt you for if it cant read the card), or do any type of disc compression...

I know you were joking but be assured if the files are recovered I nor anyone else would view them. They are mostly your family photos I assume and I would not want my family photos to be available to strangers or even some friends. You seem reluctant to let me handle it so I want you to know that I will respect your wishes about the content.

I just want to show the donors what good work they did and that we appreciate them.

Thanks,
Ruben

It was so great seeing batshit crazy sober sledge doing his thing out there. I tried to fish with him as much as possible cuz I hadn't seen him in so long (and of course because he has fished OC countless times). He got it done with a toad and then pulled a classic sledge move and found a way to lose it :smt044 it was great seeing everybody and even enduring the verbal abuse from Andy when I lost our side bet :smt009 Thanks again to everybody who did their part to make it a great time :smt006

Ruben you did an amazing job on this one. I'm impressed with how you managed and handled everything. Josh and I showed up late Friday night and crashed in the Headwaters Van. We slept in and hit the cove in the late morning. The wind was up and the drift was fast. I managed a couple lings, but nothing to write home about. It was great to be on the coast and connect with old friends and new ones. Had a blast paddling a Viking Pro Fish and running some pour overs. Its always fun to watch someone win a new kayak. Congrats to Craig on back to back wins. Awesome job man.
