I have not painted a kayak, but I have painted a few plastic gun stocks. I went to Hawleys paint store in santa rosa and got some adhesion promoter called Bulldog. It is a spray on type clear primer that helps paint stick to surfaces like plastic. With a spray on clear coat the paint on my rifle stocks have not worn off at all and I am not easy on them either. Cool paint job BTW!

Sign painter by trade, just putting my two cents in here. There's a product called Aquacoat that's made by Ronan. It's a water based lettering enamel that is a 1-2 coat paint that adheres to plastic very well. I'd recommend it for general lettering or painting. Needs application with a foam roller or natural hair brush but is one off the few paints that sticks to plastics well albeit salt water exposure will destroy most all paints over time.
