Hello all,

I fish mostly rockfish/lings and Hali's which can be very site specific.  I tend to go simple, even forgoing a Fish finder.  What GPS set=up would you reccomend, so I can start marking hotspots?

Thanks in advance for your responses!

Just got a Garmin Etrex a few weeks ago.  Do not like it. 3 times it has lost its signal (says weak signal) while just a 1.5 to 3 miles out side of Half Moon Bay.  Will try fresh batteries next time.  But, these batteries were new, anyway.

Got it for $79 + shipping on E-bay.  Will look for a better unit.

I 've been using a Garmin GPS Map 60 for about the last 1.5 years.  No complaints.  I like it alot.

Case seems robust and supposed to be waterproof, but I don't trust the waterproof ratings with saltwater, so I keep it in a waterproof GPS bag (west marine) and it's been fine.  Great unit for a lot less money than the color version.

My family has 2 of the yellow Garmin Etrex and a Magellan Sportack Pro. We (actually I) first bought them for GeoCaching, but now use them often for fishing and such. GeoCaching is our plan "B" when we travel to dive or kayak. My wife and kids have all learned how to use, manually load and understand a gps by doing this hobby.

I like the etrex. It is a good basic unit and I've never had a problem with them.

I went caching with some friends on 10/7 in the Davis area. My Sportack went nuts for no reason. As I was walking, it told me I was heading away from my waypoint at a high speed and was at 14,991 elevation. It settled down about 5 or 10 minutes later. The tracks for the day were crazy.

How many waypoints can you put in your respective favorites.  I kind of want to mark every big fish I find, and see if there is a pattern. I tend to fish the same areas close to my house?  I'm looking for 500 waypoints of so ,to see if there is a pattern.  Any further suggestions?

Thanks again to all of the posters!!!

Now-another round of fish tacos!
