grrrrr....so I recently lost a couple of big salmon where it broke me off.  :smt013 I later realized part of my problem was spooling my reel with braid and wasn't good at absorbing shock (rookie move here). I'm was using a 8'6" Okuma SST Salmon rod and also had my drag pretty loose.

Going to change out my reel to using mono but wasn't wondering what type of mono you guys use for salmon that has good strength but also good flex.

Why not just throw a topshot on there?  I use braid with about 40ft of sufix copolymer on top.

same - braid to topshot of 25lb big game mono.

check your drags to make sure they're operating smoothly. Also with braid if its not spooled properly the line can dig in and essentially get locked down so make sure your backing is tightly spooled.

cheers,
Brad

Mono is thicker, so it will affect depth when trolling.  I would top-shot with 30 lbs fluoro, so another +1 to chopper and cowman.

I have about 50-100 feet of 30lb trilene big game monofilament topshot on 65lb braid.  I'm guessing you're fishing the salmon shallow so you don't even need to bother with the braid so go FULL MONO!  In monterey the salmon are deep in the spring so I run the braid backing so I can at least pull it out of the downrigger clip at 175 ft down.

I spool with  braid and the only mono is the leader. Usually maxima

Where do you guys find flouro in 30lb test?
I have been having trouble locating any decent sized spools, even the small leader spools aren't easy to find.
I've been using maxima ultragreen mono, but think I would prefer flouro for abrasion resistance

Are you fishing with a deep six or do you have a downrigger?  If you have a downrigger and you are losing fish I would without a question go full mono.  If you have a deep six, well, that's up to you.  I run my deep sixes with braid and then a snubber because I don't want to risk losing the deep six diver.

a topshot of 30 lb fluoro is going to get expensive and in my opinion not worth it.  Big game trilene is used by many.  However, I do tie my leaders with fluoro.  I just find the next best deal on amazon.

Seagaur invizx goes up to 25yd flouro on big spools.  anything higher then yeah it gets harder to find.  usually only in 'leader' spools and pretty expensive.

why more than 25lb for our local fishing?

Thanks for the tips everyone. Going to try using a mono topshot...looks like it's working well for you guys.

Does it matter how long the topshot is...meaning should it be a certain length to handle big/long runs?

My current setup is 40# sufix braid and 30# seaguar flouro leader. I primarily use a DD6, but have been using a downrigger recently....both in shallow water.

I was recently reeling and the topshot started building in one side and locked up my reel and I had to handline a salmon up.  No bueno.  So put enough where you won't get jammed up,   maybe 40 ft is all you need :smt006

what do you mean jammed up? Ya gotta move the line over with your thumb if it builds up too much on one side.  Or rotate the rod.

I'd go full mono. I mean I did say I have a topshot, but when fishing shallow up north I never get to my braid.

If you're using a lever drag don't fill up the whole reel in order to leave room for it to accidentally build up in case you're not paying attention.  I switched over to levelwinds so I don't have to bother

When I first joined this board 10 years ago, P-line was the go to Mono that everyone seemed to use back then.   I still use it as backing, and it has never failed me. I fish older Penn reels and I don't mind the size of the line, with a top shot of 30 Braid. On my Shimano TR-100G I use straight mono as that is my kayak rockfish set up, and I have never found it lacking with 20 LB P-line.
