Dear NCKA Members,
Last July 15, 2017, Jack Johnson, myself and the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Club Sportsmens’ Club hosted a Striper-Hali Tournament that went very well and early this year Jack Johnson sent out an inquiry if there was any interest about maybe having it again in July 2018. It looked like they were a number of NCKA members who attended last year’s event who said that they were interested and would come again. Jack and I have been overbooked and too busy to pull off a Striper-Hali Tournament this year. I have been primarily off the NCKA site a lot as I had a serious arm injury in Feb and March of this year and have been working on a large custom-made furniture installation for one of my customers from SF. I will be finished installing the cabinets next week but did not have any time for anything else this past 6 mos. Jack has also been busy clearing some land that he bought up in Pollock Pines.
Last week, Jack, Kevin Nguyen (Simply Cook NCKA name) and myself da Bruddah (Michael Yamagata) met to see what we could pull together and not do the full-on tournament. Instead of a big tournament with prizes etc., we will be hosting a Striper-Hali fishing weekend. The main fishing day will be August 4th Saturday and is open to all NCKA members. We know that this is the following weekend after Albion, but we need to have the right tides for fishing with kayaks in the Bay and our first choice of August 18th, the Clubhouse was already booked for a wedding. This event will be great for NCKA’ers who may not have gone to Albion or live in the Bay Area or want to do both!!
So, this is what we are putting together:
NCKA members who want to attend can camp out on Friday and Sat night. Frank who owns the Fury will pick up live anchovies on Friday from SF where all the commercial boats go. We will be offering live bait for everyone for $10-$20 a big scoop. You will need to have a live fish well for your kayak. We think that this is the best way to hook up with stripers and Hali’s.
Frank who charters the Fury and has been fishing the Bay some 30 years + is the guy who really knows how to fish the Bay and has volunteered to give a Safety and Fishing the Bay Talk on Friday evening August 3rd about fishing the tides in the bay and best times and locations to catch fish. If you have never fished the Bay, this might be a great time to learn from the Pro. It can get very dangerous and treacherous if you get caught in a fast-outgoing tide or get swamped by the wake of some of the big jet ferry boats that can pass through the Brothers strait. Jack and the Harbor boat will be on call to pick people up if they get into trouble and keep track of who is out there,
We picked August 4th because that was the best day in the month for tides for fishing for Hali’s and Stripers. High tide will be around 6:03am and Low Tide will be around 11:40am. There will about a 4’ tide change which should work well for fishing.
Camping for 2 nights will be no charge. We are asking each NCKA member who comes to pay $20 to cover the rental of the Clubhouse for the Sat. Potluck and Jack will be buying a whole pig to do his CajaChina whole roast pig. The Sportsmen’s Club will provide some staples (maybe Can Huong Chow Mein) and everyone should contribute something for the Potluck Dinner.
SWAP STUFF:
Since we are not doing any prizes, we thought that it would be a good time for NCKA’ers give away or trade fishing, kayak parts, etc. that you no longer are using and to pass it on or pick something up that you may need. I have a whole bunch of Yakima Hully Rollers and Saddles that I want to give away as well as a bunch of Hobie gear that is brand new that I won’t use or need. Sounds Good???
If you are planning to attend, please send a check for $20 so that we can rent the Sportsmen’s Club for August 4th festivities and Potluck Dinner and get a rough headcount for the live bait and pay for the whole pig for the Caja China pig roast.
Send to:
Kevin Nguyen
6640 Hill St.
El Cerrito, CA 94530
Or you can VENMO the $20 to Kevin at:
Simplycook@yahoo.com
Thanks Kevin for helping with the registration!!!!
If you want to go out with Frank on his Fury, he needs at least 3 people, preferably 4 and he charges a $150 for the whole day. Frank will provide everything. If you really want to try to hook up with Stripers or a Hali, Frank and his Fury is like being on a private boat with a skipper who knows the Bay like no other person that I have met.
You can make a reservation to go fishing with Frank at Fury Sportfishing Fishing (800)499-6465
If you have never been to the Pt. San Pablo Yacht Harbor, it is a beautiful and magical place. There will also be a restaurant that will be open for Breakfast and Sunday Brunch July 7th.

Went last to this event. Have a great time fishing on the day. Sorry I can’t make it this year. Made other plans on the coast. Will definitely go next year if you have one. Enjoy the bay if you’re on it. Goof fishing.

Hey All,

If you weren't there last year, then you missed out on a fun tourney and great crowd of peeps.  Jack hosted and knocked it outta the park with the clubhouse and roast pig.  There was so much good food and booze that some guys didn't even bother to fish.  Slept in, woke up, ate/drank some more and chilled.

Thanks Michael for leading this event and Jack for hosting again.
I'm here to help get everyone registered, collect monies, and help you all have fun.

Here's the short version of what you need to know:

Event Info:
- What we're fishing for?  Stripers and Halibuts.
- Roasted Pig provided by our host, Jack.  Potluck food highly suggested to share with everyone.
- Camping available in designated areas.  No Open Fires, BBQs, or Cooking/Propane Stoves allowed in camping areas.  There will be a communal BBQ and fire pit for general use.

WHERE:
Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor
1900 Stenmark Drive
Richmond, CA 94801

HOW TO REGISTER:
Send $20 to me via Venmo, Paypal, or check by mail.
- Venmo:  simplycook@yahoo.com
- Paypal:  darienfelix@yahoo.com
- check by mail:  Kevin Nguyen, 6640 Hill Street, El Cerrito, CA 94530

Your $20 goes towards reserving the clubhouse for event use and money to pay for the roast pig.  If anyone is having trouble sending registration money or needs another alternative, then PM or call me, (408) 204-8400.

OTHER INFO:
- Safety Meeting on Friday afternoon/evening.  Time is still TBD.  This is a great time to pick Capt Frank's brain on where to fish, how to fish, and when to fish.  He brings decades of local knowledge of the area.
- Live bait will also be offered by Capt Frank.  Roughly $10-20 per scoop (basically just to cover his cost for bait/gas).

Thaanks Kevin,
This is a No Brainer quality Bay fishing event for Stripers and Halibut. Live bait (anchovies)is a great feature of his fishing event in San Pablo Bay as well as the opportunity to kayak fish from a somewhat "pristine" and very beautiful part of the Bay.
Check out my slideshow from last year!!!!

Thanks Kevin for helping to make this event happen.
I hope that we can get enough guys, gals and families to come.
Bioman, contacted me and he and his buddy are very interested. They never fished the Bay. I encouraged them to come check it out.
This is a great spot and event if you have never fished the Bay or a veteran like Eddie who seems to always be hitting San Pablo Bay on the San Raphael side.
Hey guys LIVE BAIT from Capt. Frank and his Fury!!!!
I owe you!!!
Mahalo,
Michael

I would imagine yes, as we had a lot of dogs last year.
However, just keep them under control (leash or voice command), pick up after them because there are full-time residents in the Marina, and out of the clubhouse (to help keep it clean).
