thanks TEd.  I will relay same message but with my limited layman's terms.

Poit will be 'redundancy'  I need my compass, my gps, and the visual/audible mile buoy more tomes than I can remember in orer to make it home when the fog rolls in. I the old days, I'd triangulate from wharf/mile buoy/harbor horns with a big ear out for the sound of breaking surf.  Uour is the most cogent and info-rich presentation I've seen.  I will liberally plaigerize.

Interesting design.  Wonder what are the dimensions and hull weight?

In the video, he says it's 48 inches wide.

The pedal/paddle is kind of interesting, but it looks like you'd have a lot more power going backwards rather than forwards...

Plus, look at the knee torquing as he positions.  Another goofball design I am empathetic another heartbreak in the making.  Hope he didn't borrow from his mortgage.

General Talk / Bushy needs help Saturday morning (RESOLVED)

WE'RE GOOD THANKS

I smashed my knee las week and can barely walk.  Famed Sand Crab Classic is this coming Saturday, March 9.

I need a couple volunteers with big trucks o vans to haul materials from my house over to Poruguese Hall around 8:30 on Satuday morning. Payback would be free attendance to the derby along with official tshirt and fantastic meal.

A couple seldom-seen OG's are attending this year, Freddie and Stuart (Potato River). Other NCKA's are regular attendees. Weigh in crew almost all NCKA.

Truck with cap or van, it might be rainy.

Anyone? Bueller?

PS out of town Tuesday and WEdnesday, no internet.  TExt is great 831-251-9732

AOTY / Re: Electric Motors in AOTY
« on: January 29, 2024, 08:34:22 AM »

it really is just a matter of time. There were many folks that felt this way when Hobie pedal drives first came into play in tournaments.

Of course, there are many who stand by the paddle yaks. Props to them.

Most of my fishing crew have been paddling over 30 years so when the young guy of the group got a hobie we of course gave him shit. I refer to him as a "Recreational Pedal Boat Guy" not a kayaker.   :smt001  He of course gives us shit when we want to come in when it's getting windy or we don't want to go on the long paddle to get to a new spot, etc. Good fun. Having said that and as much as it pains me, I still have to call our pedal brother a kayaker because he's using his own power to propel himself. Once a motor goes on a yak it becomes a small power boat. I mean they actually have to register it as a boat. So my issue is less with the fishing advantage in AOTY, but just that a PB guy in a kayak angler tournament isn't putting in the same physical effort as those of us who actually kayak.

As someone mentioned though, we aren't playing for prizes and it's free now so...

As for age adjustments, hell no. Kayak fishing is one of the few sports a 65 year old can compete with a 25 year old. I'm 55 and I fished about a month and a half at the end of the season last year, managed 6 species, a couple big fish and a solid rainbow. If I ever got off my ass and got back to the ocean I could possibly be competitive. And one of the most impressive AOTY winners I can remember, was Otobepelagic. I can't remember his age at the time, but he was into his 50's at least and submitted one of EVERY SPECIES! That's an impressive fishing year.

"Even though pedals are human powered it is definitely an advantage over paddle power."

I guess I agree as far as trolling goes, but that's about it. If you look back at the AOTY winners, a lot were paddle guys (kayakers)  :smt004  with solid scores. And the all time AOTY score is from a paddler.   :smt003

He was well into his 60's at the time. Being mostly genetic, the facial disfigurements had very little effect on his pedaling ability.
Yeah though I gotta agree it's really not fair for a "contest" if someone is powered vs not powered.

I would value an AOTY winner that used their own power to get there and get back, WAY more than someone who used a motor. On the other hand, just go and have fun. Including motors/sails up front would certainly remove an avenue for cheating.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: baitcaster reel recommendations?
« on: January 05, 2024, 10:27:24 AM »
I've never owned or even used a low profile baitcaster.  Maybe because my Abu Ambassadeurs are all still going strong with 10-20years on them?

(Not that there's anything wrong with that...No..)

how does it work?  I'm probly goind to sell the OLD P/U truck and may have to go upstairs and the rack on my NEW pickup truck.  Yaks are heavier and I am sadly weaker and more prone to pain for a week or so...

I'm looking for a free vintage cabin cruiser type boat. No engines perfectly OK.  Gonna use it as an ADU on my North 40. I Like the Stephens Brothers wood boats, out of Stockton.

Can I live in it?

CA Regulations / Re: Halibut changes… permanent?

Problem with more yearly limits is more bureaucracy. I am not interested in another report card for dfg. Ineffective and inefficient IMHO.
