I used to before moving to Michigan.  I'd guess about 200 trips to the con.  OP, name looks familiar...on irate?

If you can't deploy lines in the water within the restriction zone, how do you fish for halibut, salmon, threshers or anything else?

Kayak Fly Fishing / pike on a 0wt
« on: June 05, 2023, 02:12:39 PM »
Yeah, I'm still in Michigan.  Lots and lots of lm and sm bass in the area with 40-50 fish days rather common.  No shortage of pike as well, which are rather tasty btw.  Anybody heads this way in their travels give me a shout.

Most if not all of the electronics brands offer through the hull transducers.  I'm not sure if that is just for down imaging versus side scan.

I'm gimped up enough to quit standing up on my kayak a long time ago.  Neither at Berryessa or the local (very clear) lakes here has standing up in the kayak to sight fish for bass been beneficial for me.  I occasionally see carp or splake that are moving through when fishing from my boat but stationary fish ala pike and bass, not so much.  Visibility here with a calm surface is pushing almost 20 feet.

Took my pup for a run in the woods yesterday and thought of this thread.

Yeah yeah yeah.  I still get the geebies when I find wolf tracks in the snow that I made 20 minutes earlier.  There are a couple of packs close to me.  We had tracks 5 feet off of our deck 2 years ago.  Fished a small creek last year and came across a fresh wolf killed deer.  I do not go out into the woods without a firearm  With that said, I've been lucky enough to hear them multiple times but have only put eyes on one.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Harvesting bass,....
« on: February 14, 2021, 04:54:07 AM »
I know that rock face. :smt003

With that said I haven't kept a large or small mouth bass since the early to mid 70's.  (twain harte lake).  If it is legal and you like to eat them, have at it.

I've been tossing back the bass I catch here as well though a friend is trying to get me to change that.  He says they are very similar to pike and taste great when caught in cold water, not so much during summer months on smaller lakes. I've yet to catch one through the ice though, which is currently about 2 feet thick.

With no live well on the kayak I run into the age old problem, do I keep the first five fish or the last five fish?  The other dilemma is I suspect most people target bass either pre spawn or during spawn when they are easiest to catch.  October/November is actually a great time at Berryessa btw

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Advice on neoprene gloves and socks
« on: January 16, 2021, 04:26:45 AM »
I started using the Carhart thermal full coverage gloves on the yak and while ice fishing.  I can tie knots with heavier line while wearing them but usually just take them off.  They need to come off for tying little stuff while on the ice.  They keep my hands warm (single digit temps) and  have enough dexterity to do most tasks.  A major plus is they are easy to put back on with wet hands.  The fabric on the back of the hand is not waterproof but the remainder of the glove is.  An added benefit is they are cheap with good durability.

I still run into people that are adamant about waders being safe.  They float.   :smt011

The closest I've come to dying while fishing was on the Feather river flyfishing for steelhead.  I had on a pair of breathable waders and a heavy and wide belt that was on tight.  I crossed a tailout and was climbing out on the far side and slipped.  The waders filled up and I was drug towards the hole with a big eucalyptus snag in it.  The water wasn't even waste deep but I couldn't stand up due to the weight.  I tossed my wading staff to another fishermen that ran over to help, he managed to barely catch the end of it and swing me to the bank and out.  Had he not caught the staff I was toast.

Now I wear a life jacket when fishing big or fast water.  Heck, I have even worn a helmet a time or three while fishing the Pit as well.

General Talk / Re: How far do you guys paddle?
« on: May 19, 2020, 06:53:55 PM »
My farthest has been 12 miles while trolling for salmon but I was never more than about half a mile from shore.  That was in a paddle yack.  I could have gone further but was beat along with torn up hands.  I had decent gloves but wet hands on a paddle for hours were not friendly.

General Talk / Re: Heron slowly kills gopher in agonizing closeup...
« on: April 14, 2020, 04:08:33 AM »
The herons and egrets are targeting voles, mice and to a lesser extent, shrews, not gophers.  A field like that in the late spring should have hundreds, if not thousands of them little buggers per acre.

I'd choke them out too before eating them.  They are quick, can turn on a dime and bite through a thumbnail quicker than I can let go   :smt044

Safety First / Re: Travel "ban" still in place?
« on: April 07, 2020, 04:31:04 AM »
There was a group of 5 trailers pulling into the campground, they were turned away as they had Ca. plates and were informed that they were under Ca. S.I.P. order and therefore mandated to stay in their local area. They were not happy as they had driven over 5 hours to possibly bring us this crap.
Please do not plan to visit this or any other small community until this is over, just stay home in place and we will all be through this sooner than later.

As the saying goes, stupid should hurt.  In this case it was $$$$$.  I don't even live in Ca and would know better than driving 5 hours to the cove to go camping.

I started using telecom scissors when I was back in the trades.  They will cut a penny in half or slice a finger to make you bleed and seem impervious to getting gunked/clogged up.  Immune to buds.   :smt044

General Talk / Re: Stress!!!!!!!!!! Covid woes
« on: March 26, 2020, 04:33:20 AM »
Yes, stressful times indeed.  I'm working retail and having customers cough and sneeze on you, or a co-worker that thinks covid-19 is fake news that does the same and handles common equipment, makes it tough to stay.  The employer would have a really tough time if myself or the other full time employee left.

I'm in a low density area with a high proportion of elderly that will get hit hard if they catch it.  Many of them are floating the river in Egypt, and just don't comprehend.   There are only 3 cases so far in the Upper Peninsula, and non in our county, but the snowbirds and people from down state are starting to head this way to "escape".

I've got a broken toe, so hiking out on the ice to fish is not going to work.  I'm waiting for the ice to break up and get some time on the yak, another three to four weeks, to chase some lakers and splake.

stay safe
