IMO: a better, safer and cheaper alternative to the high end stuff...

I don't get it...  Which is better?  Bait tube or tank?  Also, won't the tube creat drag?

Sorry I don't have any pictures of my tube but it pretty much looks like yours Mooch. ABS with a bunch of holes in it. I agree that the tubes are awesome for sardines, smelt, shiners etc. etc.  but I do think the bait tank has it's place if you are fishing live chovies.

In my experience the chovies don't last very well in a bait tube. I wouldn't bring the bait tank out on the ocean much but for pounding sand in the sf bay or monterey for halibut with a small scoop of chovies I think the bait tanks are hard to beat.

Have any of you had success with anchovies in a bait tube? I think my tube is 4" diameter maybe another size works better?

For any kind of bait besides sardines, I prefer the bait tube.

IMO: if you leave enough of a leash out, you'd hardly notice it. (my leash lines up directly behind my Stearn)

*IMO - I personally don't like the extra weight that a bait tank puts on the kayak. The kayak becomes top heavy - a dangerous thing on a choppy day.

....just my 2 cents

Mine is the same as Mooch's I have an additional line on the back of the tube so I can keep in tight to boat if needed (like running through kelp). I've had good luck with all baits in the tube. You really only need 3-4 baits. You can always jig up more. Works like a champ. cheap and effective. I also rig the rounded cap end facing fwd. The threaded end is at the rear. The curved cap in front seems to snag less kelp, etc.

Working on A couple more designs! I want one with very little drag and one that does not twist.

my bait tube last year worked great with sardines. as long as you de-burr i think they're gold. anchovies, not so sure.

How about anchovies?  I guess both bassmanben and otter had issues with them.  I think I'll be doing a bit of hali fishing this year and they seem to like live anchovies.  I'm also trying to avoid forking out $200 for a tank...

I did not try mine with chovies but my experience is they are very weak. It could work if you do not overfill the tube and do not handle them much. I got one random chovy last year mixed in with the sardines and he was fine, but that's not exactly a valid sample size.

I guess the tube is cheap enough that I can give it a go around.  Thanks for the input!

Anybody ever tried one of these?

Sure looks like it would help with storage at the end of the day and I'm leaning towards the Lindy.

Fixin' to make one. How have you deburred the drill holes? Thinking of taping sand paper to a smaller diameter PVC - but that seems inefficient.

you can use a countersink drill bit

but i used the sandpaper on a stick method.

btw i forgot to post these crappy cellphone pics of mine earlier.  i had the same style as everyone else but had problems with the cap falling off and the bait escaping.  so i modified it with a door and a cheap hinge.  worked fine last year.

its some sort of drain cover used to keep leaves out of drains..don't know the exact name but you can find it at OSH.  I saw it on another bait tube page and I acted like my chinese heritage and stole it.

i'm not that technical.  I just got a 3" bait tube, gooped two types of caps to it and cut a door out + hinge.

i am overall pretty proud of my bait tube, its kept alive just about everything from a dozen sardines to a 14" jacksmelt that I never figured out what to do with.

I found this on a retailer's site.  It retails for $90.

Seems pretty functional.

...you can also use a funnel - just drill some holes on it.

Guys I'm loving these threads. New to NCKA although I've lurked for while. Very innovative, and it fires me up. I really appreciate it.

My question is: what size PVC should I use? I went to Home Depot today and got 4", but I'd love to downsize to something cheaper and less bulky. Is 2" too small for king fish/sardines? Maybe 3" is the sweet spot? What do you think?

Regarding length, I'm thinking 14" but I just pulled that out of thin air. What do you think?

Could not find a newer post on the subject so here's mine.
Only thing to do different next time is to glue on the base so when it is removed from the water it still holds water. 4" x 14"

3 inch abs. Capped one end. The other is a standard drain screen. Works awesome, it does slow my paddle by 0.6mph which is considerable. Cost about 30 bucks. 8 buck was glue. If anyone is interested, I have glue.

Digging this guy up,

anyone using bait tubes still?  Live wells are awesome, but heavy and take up a lot of space I can't imagine it would be much fun if you happen to flip the yak.

I'm always sad to have dead bait that I just jigged up.

That was the first bait tube I saw, I really enjoy his videos, especially his DIY videos.  I stole his rod holder idea and it was awesome.

Was more curious on if people who are live bait guys still use them or if they've all gone to a livewell.

I was in Maui recently and they were using these Bait Condos posted earlier to store live bait. They were also using AI's with the sails up so i don't think the drag was as big a deal. One of the gents i talked to said if fishing is slow he will sail to a different island to catch fish
