Title: California fish ID book.
Post by: ab10 on June 29, 2007, 08:53:33 AM
For all you kayak anglers and fish lovers,

The DFG recently put together a fish ID book, that I had the honor of producing some of the illustrations. This book has over 150 fresh (painted by Joseph Tomelleri) and saltwater (by me) fish and invertibrates that we like to catch and eat.  The book also includes life history notes, distigushing characteristics, and suggested bait to use, and more.

They(the DFG) are having issues getting this out to the public, so I wanted to give everyone the heads up that I have them and will ship them to you for 7 bucks.  I am not allowed to sell for profit, so I am basically charging you what it cost me to ship it to you.

If you want one, you can send me an email, ono@abachar.com, or you can go to my website www.abachar.com/interface (http://www.abachar.com/interface) where if you buy any matted fish print, I will toss one of these in the envelope for free.

Thanks,
Amadeo

I bought one of these Fish ID books at a fishing show last winter. I really appreciate the helpful information in the book and the illustrations really are very nice. I highly recommend getting the book, especially if you're a newbie to ocean fishing like me.

Amadeo
Thanx for your incredible work on this quality project! :headbang:I just got one given to me :smt003 My only tiny 2 cents worth of feedback is i was surprised not to see a Canary, Yelloweye or Black Sea Bass. I would have thought the DFG would want to publicize the common protected species, or do they think its better to teach us thro' hefty fines?
Im really stoked to see the life expectancy info. A few years ago we got into a great Quillback bite at the Islands. About half way thro 4 of us filling our limits, Doug appears from the cabin with a new glossy id chart in case some strange red fish hits the deck. i decided to look at the stats on the Quillback and went ashen nearly puked! Life span 95 freakin years!!!! I looked at the cooler to see 20 large Quills and a bunch of Yellowtail rockfish (life span 65yrs) My habits have drastically changed since this. It really shook me up. The bigger ones had to be older than me, having survived in the cold murky depths all that time.

i just had an afterthought. There are good ID photos for those protected species in the annual published regs, which we all should have read, and thus may have been deemed to be redundant in a compact book.

It is a bit redundant, but the ID book has 150+ species, while the reg book has about 25(also my illustrations). Your previous post was noted by me as well when I was doing the work for the book.  I was wondering where those species were, as well as a china rockfish, which can be confused with the Black and Yellow and the Quillback.  My thoughts were not considered then 6 months later they realized this, and I did all four of those species for them, as well as a juvi yelloweye, cowcod, greenspotted, and rosy.

Glad you like.

I guess I did get you and it is a compliment indeed.

It's amazing what scaling down artwork 500% will do to the illusion. :smt002
