Fishing Tournaments and Events / Gimme Shelter XVIII - It might be a thing...
« on: February 21, 2024, 03:03:26 PM »
With the news coming out that we (apparently) will get to fish for rockfish/lingcod in less than 20 fathoms this year, and that the only two options being considered (again, apparently) will both have May open for those depths, I am considering launching registration for a return to the nostalgic past.
The last Gimme Shelter to go down was GS13 in 2019, where the weather hammered us, the tourney went to a shore-based format, and those who still showed up (well over half of the couple hundred who registered) had a great time despite the rain, wind and less time on the water (many of us still fished before and after tourney day). GS14 was to be held in May of 2020, but covid came along... So, figuring to account for the years gone by, I would call the event GS18 this year, or Gimme Shelter XVIII.
My concerns about holding the event are mainly associated with a desire to minimize our group's impact on the fisheries, and at the same time I want to show the rest of the community how conscientious many of us kayak anglers are. I will be thinking on this, with intent to craft a format that fulfills my intents and hopes.
If I go for it, I will likely open registration in early March and close it in mid to late April.
I'm considering these dates for the tourney:
May 4th, 2024
May 11th, 2024
Please feel free to offer input here.
