Does anyone know if Encinal Boat Ramp/ARW is open with all the shut downs currently happening? Was going to head down tomorrow if anyone is interested. Just want to make sure the park itself is open.

Recipes / Re: Making salmon/other fish “sushi safe”
« on: July 07, 2019, 12:12:47 AM »
Most home freezers don’t get to -4 and they specifically warn against doing it in a home freezer...and ill take 9 bucks of dry ice overkill over a tapeworm any day!

Recipes / Making salmon/other fish “sushi safe”

So, I (very fortunately) have two salmon I recently caught (non yak) and wanted to make some lox. As most of you are aware, to kill parasites the FDA  recommends -31 degrees F for 18 hours, or -7 for 7 days to kill tapeworm and nematodes....which *a lot* of pacific salmon carry (one source I found years ago while doing a paper on the subject in school said nearly all salmon and pacific rockfish are infected, but I can’t find it). Well, that’s kind of a bummer to me because I really love Lox.  Somebody here, I think it was Moo, purchased a scientific freezer to bring the temperature down to the specified levels. I came up with an alternate method… I filled the bottom of my yeti cooler with solid Styrofoam I bought at Home Depot and cut it to fit the cooler. I then placed the fish on the Styrofoam (vac packed and already frozen at 0 F)) with a raised wire tray above that. On top of that I put 8 pounds of dry ice and a few more blocks of insulation on top of that and shut the cooler. And viola....my salmon has been at -61 degrees for the last 19 hours. It totally worked!

General Fishing Tips / Re: Timber cove or Ft Ross?
« on: May 31, 2019, 07:20:25 PM »
I fish at Ft Ross quite a bit. I’ve had much better luck north, near those big rocks. Just about 50 yards south of the first rock you come to going North is an awesome spot....very snaggy though! I bet there’s at least a thousand pounds of lead stuck to that structure lol.

CA Regulations / Re: New changes with Lingcod and RF limits
« on: May 21, 2019, 08:58:52 PM »
I have no research to back this up, but I bet recreational fishing has ZERO impact on the RCG fishery. It’s stupid to lower the limit for recreational guys, absolutely kills charter operators and other people who have negligible impact on the fishery, but for whom a limit decrease is a job killer. Decrease COMMERCIAL limits, let recreational fishing thrive!

I'm interested...need to figure out if i can get a hall pass from the wife and kid to do a full day of fishing...i think i hear lingcod calling my name  :smt003

Just an fyi.....I'm gonna hit up the bay again this weekend for butts, so I won't be there. But damn it I'm so torn....with the commercial crab closure, I bet there'll be easy limits.
