Missed PIF. Back in Minnesota for a wedding and birthday with family. Get back to Monterey on Friday morning @ 12:30 AM. A few hours of sleep and off the the captains meeting. Can't wait to be on the water.
-
Still a couple days left to sign up! The swell report is looking a tad "sporty" but this is shaping up to be a great event once again!
-
Almost 100 anglers this year!!!!
-
Pre fish report. Got on the water at 8 am and off at 1 pm. Landed and released a few blacks in the 15 to 18 inch range. Kept one at 22 inches. Short cab and ling released. Pretty slow overall
-
I had problems with my wrist and decided to let it heal instead of making it worse. I fished on Wednesday and the conditions were perfect but the fishing was slow. Did anyone make it out on the water for the tourney? Doesn’t anyone have any pictures to show or stories to tell?
-
Does anyone know when they will post the results? I think we finished in 14th. But just wanted to make sure. Had a great time. Will be there next year.

Haha thanks :)
I didn't get any pictures, I'm sure there's some out there - One F, cajun, ??.
Brandi and I took 3rd place in fairly sporty conditions. A bonus category of "other flatfish" was added late. It was a good thing that I had my flatfish gear with me, so it was an option. Brandi and I met about 4:45 at the beach and finalized our strategy. She would stay in close and do the traditional rockfish fishing, and I would go out for flatfish.
I made my way out and assessed conditions. It was snotty, but no wind, and within my comfort zone and definitely not the worst I'd ever seen. I made the call to continue west until I found the fish but not going past 180' because of time constraints.
I stopped at about 140' and dropped down. I caught a sculpin. Moved out to 160' and caught dabs but not the petrale sole I was shooting for. Got out to 180' and dropped again. I couldn't keep the sand dabs off. I must have caught 50, 100, who knows? I was throwing the small ones back and keeping the big ones, up to 11.5". I caught a petrale sole - finally - but just one. I caught a chicken halibut which I had to throw back becuause the season is closed, but I think we will meet again. Finally ended up losing my dab rig when what was probably a skate swam off. It was way to big ot deal with and it was after 10 and I had a long haul to get back to weigh in, so I horsed it til it broke me off.
On the way back I trolled a DD6 ;and anchovie with a giant shortbus. I had a takedown, but the large following sea made it impossible to keep the line from going slack and it soon came unbuttoned. I stowed the salmon gear and stopped at the first structure at about 100' and dropped bait, made a couple drifts but nothing. I switched to a lancer and on the first lancer drift I stoned a 22" cabby between the eyes. Next drift, a 19" black, but then not much. I ended up cutting it closer than I would have liked but got back to the beach with 7 minutes to spare and in line with 4 minutes to go.
We submitted 2 large sand dabs, 1 petrale sole, 1 cabezon, and 2 black rockfish. It was good enough for 3rd and a nice plaque, a tumbler, a paddle, and a 3 day 2 night trip to Tahoe.
Thanks to Pacific Outfitters for a great event and I look forward to next year!
-
Sounds like you really had to work for it. What is that, 5-6 miles out? Congrats on the 3rd place finish, that Tahoe trip sounds sweet.

Maybe 4.5 or 5 miles?

Had a blast at TRW8. Challenging conditions and really tough bite. We took first with a modest 6 fish stringer of 4 rockfish over 20” and 2 greenlings just under 15”.
After fishing trinidad earlier and slow reports from prefishing our plan was to only target rockfish. And try to put in 3 species of large rockfish and then target greenlings. We stuck to the plan and it paid off. Barely. Lol
We waded through tons of rockfish but all we could come up with were limits of 20-21”ers. Once rockfish were on stringer we lightened up tackle and had a double hookup on greenlings. Nothing special but every fish was solid so on a tough bite we fished it out till the end and hoped for the best.
Fisheducator peddled thru knee pain and sea sickness and scored our biggest rockfish.
Humboldt Hookers (Doug and Brandy) 3rd place
Sharkbait (Kenny and Garret) 2nd Place
Kenny also won the side bet with a 25” 11lb cab
Thank Pacout and Crew

We had a blast out there managed to at least place 16th, and biggest Vermillion this year can't wait to hit it next year. Hope to see all of you there next year meanwhile be safe out there.
-
Another great event hosted by Pacific Outfitters! What an awesome time with great people and great weather. It was a tough bite, still many delivered quality fish. I was lucky enough to have Howard Kirk-aka-Surfingdude as my partner and we did well enough to place 4th overall out of 50 teams and were also lucky enough to catch the biggest fish for the tournament, a hefty 33" ling, which by the way is kinda small by Trinidad standards: smt003
Anyhow a really chill event so don't miss out on this great venue next year!
